Westbrook’s Tennis Teams Notch Four Wins Apiece; Baseball and Softball Each Grab a Victory

Girls’ Tennis

The Westbrook girls’ tennis team finished up the regular season with the tall task of playing four matches in three days. The Knights won each match to enter the postseason at 15-5. Additionally, No. 1 singles player Sara Farnoli and No. 3 singles player Julia Farnoli both completed the regular season slate undefeated.

On May 14, the Knights headed to Old Saybrook where they picked up a 6-1 victory versus the Rams. Sara Farnoli swept the No. 1 singles match at 6-0, 6-0, while Sarah Davey grabbed a 7-5, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position. In the No. 3 match, Julia Farnoli earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory, and Gabriella Koplas got the 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot.

As for doubles, the No. 2 duo of Olivia Archer and Alex Young scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory, and No. 3 pair Juliana Fabrizi and Gianni Salisbury also earned an 8-4 win in a shortened match.

On May 15, Westbrook played two matches away from home at two different school and impressively picked up two more victories. First up for the Knights was a 6-1 victory at Coginchaug, after which they headed to Portland and grabbed a 7-0 sweep.

Against Coginchaug, Sara Farnoli (6-1, 6-1), Davey (6-2, 6-0), Julia Farnoli (6-0, 6-1), and Gabriella Koplas (6-2, 6-3) took their singles matches. In doubles, the No. 1 duo of Savannah Marshall and Lexi Koplas earned a 6-0, 6-1 win, and the No. 2 tandem of Archer and Young took an 8-1 victory in an abbreviated match.

At Portland, Sara Farnoli (6-2, 6-0), Davey (6-0, 6-1), Julia Farnoli (6-3, 6-4), and Koplas (2-6, 6-4, 6-3), all earned singles-match victories. As for doubles, Marshall and Lexi Koplas (6-2, 6-1), Archer and Young (6-0, 6-1), and Fabrizi and Salisbury (6-1, 6-1) all picked up wins.

On May 16, Westbrook swept its way to another win in 7-0 home match against Cromwell. Each match was decided in a single game by who could score eight points first. Each singles win was recorded as follows: Sara Farnoli (8-2), Davey (8-2), Julia Farnoli (8-1), Gabriella Koplas (8-4). Each doubles victory came accordingly: Marshall and Lexi Koplas (8-0), Archer and Young (8-3), and Fabrizi and Salisbury (8-0).

Boys’ Tennis

The Knights also tallied four wins in last week’s matches. Westbrook completes the regular season with a record of 16-4.

On May 14, the Knights played two home matches against two different opponents. First, Westbrook defeated Coginchaug by a score of 6-1, and after that the Knights earned a 5-2 victory versus Old Saybrook.

The next day, Westbrook claimed a 5-2 home win against Granby Memorial.

On May 18, the Knights headed to Cromwell where they defeated the Panthers in a close 4-3 match.

Softball

The Knights played three games last week and earned a win in one of them. Westbrook’s record moved to 2-16 as a result.

On May 14, the Knights played a road contest at the Academy of the Holy Family and earned a lopsided 26-5 road win. Westbrook scored seven runs in the top of the first inning, and the Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. In the second, the Knights scored 15 runs to put the game well out of reach. After four full innnings, Westbrook held a 26-5 advantage and was named the winner by virtue of the mercy rule.

Carolyn Bauman went 2-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI. Jamie Merola walked four times and scored three runs, while Juliana Gerena had a hit, two runs, and three RBI. Madison Marshall supplied two hits, four walks, four runs, and five RBI. Samantha Nunez had a base knock, scored four runs, and had an RBI. Madison Marshall had a hit, three runs and three RBI. Alivia Ciarcia provided three runs and an RBI. Kiley McCarthy scored two runs, as did Olivia Hartzell.

On May 15, Westbrook lost a 16-0 home contest versus Valley Regional, and the next day lost by a score of 14-0 at Old Lyme.

Baseball

The Westbrook baseball team played a home game against Stafford for its lone game on the slate last week. The Knights came away with a 8-3 victory and moved to a 7-11 record on the season.

On May 16, Westbrook hosted the Bulldogs and earned a victory thanks in part to a complete-game effort from pitcher Cameron Marshall, who struck out six batters.

Stafford got on the board first with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the Knights took a 3-2 edge with a three-spot in the bottom of the frame. In the sixth inning, Westbrook put another five runs across the plate for an 8-2 advantage, before the Bulldogs scored a meaningless run in the top of the seventh for the 8-3 final.

In addition to getting the win on the mound, Marshall went 2-for-4, scored two runs, and drove in three. Connor Cruz provided a pair of hits and scored a run, while David McCain walked and scored a run. Kyle Robison had a hit and two RBI, and Quinn Ernst supplied a hit.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Westbrook attended the Shoreline Novice Invitational hosted by Haddam-Killingworth on May 15. It marked a final opportunity to qualify for the Shoreline Conference Championships and for athletes to finish out the season with personal-best results. Westbrook accomplished both as Zach Boardman, Gianni Adorno, Cole Strzelecki, Landon McKeith, Carlos Espinoza and Ben Wallace completed their individual regular season with strong showings.

Sophomore Zach Boardman qualified for the Shoreline Conference Championship in the 100-meter dash, finishing second with a time of 12.43 seconds.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Knights’ girls’ outdoor track team also took part in the Shoreline Novice Invitational on May 15. Natasha Mattera, Micayla Malchiodi, Marguerite Bartlett, Cierra Brundage, Lauren Horne, Bailey Roberts, and Devin Mulvihill finished out the regular season with some of their best performances as well.

Sophomore Marguerite Bartlett finished second in the 3,200-meter run with Shorelines-qualifying time of 13:43, which was a 17-second improvement on her personal best. Bartlett also turned in a personal record in the 800-meter run with a fourth-place time of 2:47, which also qualified for Shorelines.

Sophomore Lauren Horne won the javelin with a personal-best throw of 69 feet, and fellow sophomore Bailey Roberts finished fourth with a throw of 63 feet-8 inches.
