The Valley Regional boys’ lacrosse squad played a pair of games last week and came away with a split. The Warriors record moved to 8-8 to finish off the regular season slate.
On May 14, the Warriors lost a 10-9 road game at Haddam-Killingworth. The Cougars got out to a 5-2 lead after the first half of play, but Valley was able to tie the game at 6-6 after outscoring H-K four goals to one in the third quarter. Unfortunately, Valley couldn’t put it away in the fourth and the Cougars defeated the Warriors 10-9 after a 4-3 final frame.
Senior captain Sean Cole provided two goals and three assists, while Cameron Frazier added five goals in the losing effort. Freshman Duncan Rider had a goal and three assists, and fellow freshman Cooper Strecker had one goal and one assist. Senior Ricky Persico added a goal. Senior captain goalie Dylan LaPlace made 16 saves.
Two days later, the Warriors earned an 11-3 road win against Suffield. Rider scored four goals and added three assists to give him 84 points (58 goals, 26 assists) on the year, which marks a program record for the most points scored by a freshman in a season. Rider broke the record of 81 points (51 goals, 30 assists) that had been set by his older brother Bradley. Sophomore Keenan Pindar notched three goals and one assist, while Cole and Frazier added two goals and one assist apiece. Strecker made three assists, and Persico provided a pair of helpers. LaPlace made 16 saves in net.
Softball
Valley payed four games last week and won three heading into the final week of the regular season. The results moved the Warriors’ record to 18-1 on the year.
On May 15, Valley took a 16-0 road victory over Westbrook. The Warriors got out to an 8-0 lead by the third inning and only expanded their lead as the game progressed.
Junior Addy Bullis threw six innings with 13 strike outs before handing the ball to fellow junior Lauren Allen who finished the game with a scoreless seventh. Allen provided some pop at the plate with three hits, four runs, and two RBI, while sophomore Lexi Ross had a hit and scored four runs. Bullis had a hit and two RBI, and Hannah Jenkins provided a hit and three runs scored.
The next day, the Warriors scored a 12-2 road win over Suffield. Valley scored five runs in the first inning and added two more in the second for a 7-0 advantage. The Warriors continued to pile on until the fifth inning when Suffield scored two runs. Suffield couldn’t close the gap enough to keep the game going, and the mercy rule dictated that Valley was the winner. Bullis and Allen combined to pitch five innings and Bullis tallied 11 Ks in the win.
Bullis also went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, and Allen was 2-for-3 with two runs. Junior Riley Millburne had a 4-for-5 night with two runs and two RBI. Ross nabbed two hits and a run. Freshman Vivian Paradis went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Carley Kirla and Jenkins each supplied two hits, one run, and one RBI. Amara had a pair of hits and an RBI.
On May 18, Valley hosted Old Saybrook and earned an 11-1 win over the Rams.
The next day, the Warriors took just their first loss this year, dropping a 3-0 home contest against Coginchaug. The Warriors were unable to muster any offense against the Blue Devils. Valley allowed a run in the fifth inning and two runs in the seventh to take the 3-0 defeat.
Baseball
The Warriors closed out their regular season slate with a pair of games and came away with a win and a loss last week. With the split, Valley’s record moved to 11-9 before heading to the playoffs.
On May 14, the Warriors grabbed a 3-2 road win versus Old Lyme. Two days later, Valley lost a 18-6 home contest versus Cromwell.
Girls’ Tennis
Valley had four matches on the schedule last week and won three of them. The Warriors took only their first loss of the year in their final week to finish the regular season with a 19-1 record.
On May 15, Valley won a 5-2 home contest versus East Hampton/Hale-Ray. The next day, the Warriors took their only defeat of the regular season in 5-2 road loss against Old Lyme.
On May 18, Valley headed to Morgan and scored a 7-0 road win over the Huskies. The next day, the Warriors shutout Coginchaug in a 7-0 home match.
Boys’ Tennis
The Warriors had four matches last week and came away with a win. With these results, Valley finishes the regular season with a record of 7-11.
On May 14, the Warriors lost a 7-0 road contest at Morgan. The next day, Valley traveled to East Hampton and took a narrow 4-3 road defeat against the Bellringers.
On May 16, the Warriors hosted Old Lyme and lost a 6-1 home match to the Wildcats. Then on May 19, Valley earned a 5-2 road win at Coginchaug.
Golf
Valley played two matches last week and lost them both. The defeats moved the Warriors record to 1-9 on the season.
On May 13, Valley hosted a match against Coginchaug at the Black Hall Golf Club in Old Lyme and took a 163-249 loss to the Blue Devils.
The Warriors’ lowest score on the day came from senior Logan Bellos finished with 52 strokes. Freshman Jake Castellano turned in a 57 on his scorecard, while sophomore Zachary Figuenick was right behind him with 58 strokes. Sophomore Henry McPherson shot a 77 in the loss.
