Old Saybrook Baseball, Girls’ Lacrosse Finish Regular Season Strong

Baseball

The Old Saybrook boys’ baseball team had a full plate last week with four games on the slate. The Rams took home three wins and finished the regular season with a 12-8 record.

On May 14, Old Saybrook scored a 2-0 road win at Coginchaug. The Rams scored single runs in the first and third innings to supply all the offense they would need.

Toby Marineau spinned a gem on the mound with a complete game shutout win, only allowing five hits and striking out four. Jaden Rolon went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Patrick Kelley notched a hit and an RBI, while Cooper Pavlovich drove in a run. Davis Brown, Jordan Butler, and Dan Cote each added a hit apiece.

The next day, Old Saybrook lost a 4-1 home contest versus Hall. The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but that was all the offense they could muster as Hall scored two in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Rolon went 2-for-3 with a run, and Kelley grabbed a hit and an RBI. Brown, Cote, and Mason Wilcox each tallied a base hit.

On May 16, the Rams earned an 8-0 home victory versus St. Bernard. Old Saybrook scored a run in the first inning, then added three more in the second for a 4-0 advantage. In the fourth, the Rams doubled their score to make it 8-0.

Three Old Saybrook pitchers combined to get the shutout with Rolon picking up two innings, Cote throwing four, and Will Bergeron finishing off the game with one inning of work.

Rolon went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Cote had a hit and two RBI. Luke Duffy had a 3-for-3 day at the plate and had a pair of runs to go with an RBI. Nicholas Condulis notched a hit, two walks, and a pair of runs scored.

The next day, Old Saybrook defeated East Hampton in a 7-2 road win. The Rams struck first with four runs in the third inning for a 4-0 lead, and the Bellringers halved that advantage with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Old Saybrook came back with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to reach the 7-2 final.

Gabe Kaar went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, while Condulis, Brown, and Kelley each provided a hit, a run, and an RBI. Cote had a base knock and an RBI, and Butler added a hit.

Kaar went 3.2 innings striking out five, and he was followed by Pavlovich, who threw 1.1 innings. Bergeron and Butler were on the mound for an inning each to finish the game.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Rams played two games last week to complete the regular season schedule, and they took home two more wins on the slate. The victories boosted Old Saybrook’s record to 13-3 for the season.

On May 14, Old Saybrook scored a closely contested 11-10 matchup with North Branford. The two teams played to a 6-6 dead heat after the first half, and the Rams edged the Thunderbirds 5-4 after the intermission for the 11-10 win.

The game was so close that Old Saybrook out shot the Thunderbirds 20-19. Gilly Hart provided four goals and two assists in the victory, while Mandy Beck scored two goals to go with one assist. Izzy Sigersmith scored three goals while Lily Cody and Allyson Kehlenbach each added a goal. Kathryn Spotts supplied an assist, as well. Julia Swett made 11 saves in net for the Rams.

On May 18, the Rams picked up an 18-8 lopsided home win against Waterford.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook played a pair of games last week and took losses in both contests. The defeats drop the Rams record to 2-13 on the year.

On May 14, Old Saybrook lost a 12-0 home contest against North Branford. Two days later, the Rams traveled to Cromwell where they lost a 13-3 decision versus the Panthers.

Boys’ Tennis

Old Saybrook tallied five decisions in a busy schedule of matches last week. The Rams earned three wins total and moved their final regular season record to 12-5 on the year.

On May 14, Old Saybrook lost a 5-2 road match versus Westbrook. The next day, the Rams hosted Haddam-Killingworth for two matches and earned a 6-1 victory in the first and a 4-3 win in the nightcap.

On May 16, Old Saybrook lost a 4-3 decision at Cromwell. The next day, the Rams defeated North Branford via forfeit.

Girls’ Tennis

The Rams played seven matches over the course of five days last week as they finished up the regular season. Old Saybrook notched two wins to end up with a 7-13 regular season record.

On May 14, the Rams lost a 6-1 road match at Old Lyme before returning home and dropping a 6-1 decision against Westbrook.

The next day, Old Saybrook won a pair of road matches at Haddam-Killingworth. The Rams earned a 4-3 win in the first match, and then they took the second match by a 5-2 tally.

On May 16, Old Saybrook hosted Cromwell and lost a close 4-3 home contest to the Panthers.

Two days later, the Rams traveled to Portland and lost a 5-2 road decision to the Highlanders. Later in the day, Old Saybrook hosted North Branford and took a 6-1 defeat.

Golf

The Rams played one home match against Cromwell last week and were victorious in the contest. The win bumps Old Saybrook’s record to 8-4 on the year.

On May 14, the Rams hosted Cromwell at Fenwick Golf Course. Old Saybrook defeated the Panthers by a score of 169-180.

Jack Walsh and Matt Rothman took home co-medalist honors for turning in the lowest score of the day at 41 strokes. Ben O’Dell shot a 43, and Garrett Brady was just one stroke behind him at 44. Garrett Hilger had a tally of 56 in the Rams’ win.
