The Morgan baseball team played three games and picked up two wins on the week. With these results, the Huskies finished the regular season with a record of 9-11 and qualified for the Class S State Tournament.
On May 14, Morgan earned a 6-4 home win over Portland for its eighth win and punched its state tourney ticket. Each team scored a run in the first inning, and the score stayed knotted at 1-1 through the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, the Huskies put a five-spot on the board to take a 6-1 advantage. The Highlanders responded with three runs in the sixth but ultimately could not catch Morgan.
Connor Derry pitched a complete game for the win and struck out six over seven innings of work. AJ Fritz went 3-for-4 at the plate, scored a run, and drove in two. Ryan Egan had a 2-for-3 showing with two RBI, and Kyle Burt had a hit and two RBI. Ryan Hromadka supplied two hits and scored a run.
The next day, the Huskies took a defeat in walk-off fashion at Coginchaug. Morgan took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, and the Blue Devils trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the frame. Coginchaug took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the third, and after each team notched a run in the fourth, the score moved to 5-3. Morgan tied the game with two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but the Blue Devils walked off with the win with three singles in the bottom of the seventh.
Burt had a hit, two walks, and two runs scored, while Egan provided a hit and two runs. Kyle Suraci added a hit and two RBI, and Garret Garbinski had a hit along with an RBI. Hromadka notched a walk, a run, and an RBI.
On May, 16, the Huskies scored a 12-0 home victory over Wilcox Tech. Suraci earned a five-inning shutout win with four Ks after the game was called on account of the mercy rule. Suraci also had two hits, three runs scored, and two RBI. Fritz provided two hits, two runs, and an RBI, while Mike Zingarella went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs. Chris Morris supplied a hit and two runs.
Softball
Morgan played just one game last week, which it lost. The Huskies’ record on the season moved to 4-15 on the year with the defeat.
On May 16, Morgan hosted Old Saybrook and took a 10-6 home loss against the Rams. Old Saybrook mounted an early 5-1 lead after the first inning. The Huskies added a run in the second to trim it to 5-2. Both teams scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings for a 7-4 Rams’ advantage entering the seventh. Old Saybrook scored another three in the top of the seventh inning and the Huskies were only able to close it to 10-6 in the bottom of the frame.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Huskies played three contests last week earned two more wins to qualify for the Class S State Tournament in their final game of the regular season. With these results, Morgan’s record moved to 7-9 prior heading into the postseason.
On May 14, the Huskies lost a 12-8 road matchup versus Old Lyme. Two days later, Morgan grabbed an 18-9 road victory at Haddam-Killingworth. On May 18, the Huskies scored a 17-1 blowout win over St. Bernard to earn their spot at states.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Morgan scored two wins in two games last week. The victories pushed the Huskies’ record to 10-6 to close out the regular season as they prepare for the playoffs.
On May 14, Morgan earned 6-5 road win at Old Lyme. It was a hotly contested matchup with the Huskies and Old Lyme tied at 4-4 after the first half. Morgan added a goal in the third quarter to take a 5-4 lead, and both squads managed to hit the back of the net again in the fourth to give Morgan the 6-5 edge after time expired.
Matt Lee scored three goals, while Tim Lichack added two goals and one assist in the victory. Ford Pender and Sean Fitzgerald supplied a goal and an assist each. Zak Johnson added a pair of assists. Matt Luchuk made 10 saves in net, and Morgan tallied 36 shots to Old Lyme’s 20.
Two days later, the Huskies picked up an 8-5 home win at the Indian River Complex over Haddam-Killingworth.
Morgan held a 5-3 advantage after the first half of the contest and pushed it to 8-5 after outscoring H-K by a 3-2 margin post-intermission.
Ryan Caldwell scored three goals on behalf of Morgan, while Lichack provided two goals. Pender put up a goal, and Fitzgerald notched one goal and one assist. Mike Savage, Zak Johnson, and Matt Lee had one assist apiece. Luchuk made 10 saves on 20 shots.
Boys’ Tennis
The Huskies notched three shutout wins last week in as many matches to finish the regular season strong. Morgan came away with a 14-4 record on the campaign as the team prepares for the postseason.
On May 14, the Huskies played a pair of home matches against Valley Regional and Coginchaug and won them both by a 7-0 score.
In the No. 1 singles match, Chris Nuzzo earned a 6-3, 6-2 win, while Garret Johnson netted a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot. Paddy Murray scored a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 3 match, and JP Nye came away with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 position. In the No. 5 spot, Sean Arribas Cockley earned a 6-1, 6-0 win.
The No. 1 duo of Isaac Adler and Calvin Jackson and the No. 2 pairing of Tyler Greenhouse and Zach Johnson both earned wins by default.
Against Coginchaug in the nightcap, Nuzzo (6-1, 6-0) and Johnson (6-2, 6-3) both notched victories. Nye moved up to the No. 3 spot and grabbed a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Murray earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 4 position. Arribas Cockley (6-2, 6-3) also got a win.
As for doubles, the No. 1 tandem of Zach Johnson and Liam Whelan scored a 6-1, 6-1 win, while Adler and Greenhouse pair up as the No. 2 duo for a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Two days later, the Huskies claimed a 7-0 road win versus East Hampton. Nuzzo, (6-4, 6-1), Garrett Johson (6-3, 6-2), Nye (6-4, 6-2), Murray (6-2, 6-3), and Arribas Cockley (6-0, 6-3) all earned singles match wins.
As for the doubles matches, No. 1 pair Zach Johnson and Whelan swept a 6-0, 6-0 win. In the No. 2 match, Adler, and Jackson took a 6-2, 6-3 win.
Girls’ Tennis
Morgan played four matches to close out the regular season, and the Huskies were able to add one more win to their tally this campaign. With these results, Morgan’s record ends up at 5-15 on the year.
On May 14, the Huskies played two road matches against Coginchaug. Morgan dropped the first contest 5-2 and then took a 4-3 defeat in the second match.
Two days later, Morgan defeated East Hampton/Hale-Ray in a 5-2 home win.
On May 18, the Huskies lost a 7-0 home match against Valley Regional.
Golf
Morgan hit the links for two matches last week and scored one win on the slate. With these results, the Huskies’ record shifted to 5-10 on the year.
On May 14, Morgan headed to Indian Springs in Middlefield and defeated North Branford in a 189-224 road match. Matt Zoner came away with the medal with the lowest score on the day at 45 strokes.
The next day, the Huskies had a home contest at the Clinton Country Club and took a 172-192 defeat against East Lyme. Morgan received its lowest score from Jason Cohen who shot a 40. The day also included recognition for the Huskies’ seniors in Marie Kane, Heather Vollhart, John Inglis, Matt Zoner, and senior captain Ryan Powers.
