North Haven Softball Posts 18-2 Regular Season; Garthwait Blanks Branford

Softball

One week after winning its third-straight division title, the North Haven softball team claimed victory in its final three games of the regular season to finish with a record of 18-2. The Indians earned wins over Guilford (3-0), Amity (7-2), and Staples (9-0) in last week’s action. North Haven is playing in the SCC Tournament this week and will be competing Class L State Tournament after that.

The Indians began last week by posting a 3-0 home victory versus Guilford on Senior Night on May 14. Senior Lauren Card tossed a one-hitter to notch the win for North Haven. Senior Peyton Davis had three hits, including a home run; and fellow senior Gigi Russo also had three hits, one of which was a double.

The following day, North Haven defeated Amity by a 7-2 score at the Old Tavern Road Complex in Orange. Card pitched another solid game to get the victory, and she also had a single and a double at the plate. Senior Sarah Lombardi crushed a three-run home run, while sophomore Alexa Ferriouolo hit a two-run homer for the Indians.

Then on May 16, the Indians hosted Staples for their regular-season finale and earned a 9-0 victory at North Haven Athletic Complex.

Defending champion North Haven earned the No. 1 seed in the SCC Tournament and is hosting No. 8 Sacred Heart Academy for a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 20. If the Indians win, they will play the winner of No. 4 Law and No. 5 Lauralton Hall in the semis at Biondi Field at West Haven High School at either 5 or 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The title game takes place on that same field at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.

Baseball

The Indians wrapped up their regular season by playing three home games during the final week. North Haven came away with one win to finish with a record of 11-9. The Indians earned a win over Branford to go with defeats against Fairfield Prep and North Branford last week. North Haven is competing in the SCC Tournament and the Class L State Tournament this week.

North Haven hosted Fairfield Prep on May 14 and took an 8-4 loss. The Jesuits scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second inning, and another run in the third for a 6-1 lead through three innings. Prep tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh to make 8-1, before the Indians scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Senior Matt Soloman went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, fellow senior Hunter Garthwait was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI, and junior Mason Balmer had a double with a walk. Senior Nick Rossi pitched three perfect scoreless innings of relief.

The next day, the Indians posted a 2-0 shutout versus Branford to avenge a 5-2 loss against the Hornets from earlier in the season. Garthwait pitched a complete game to notch his fourth win of the year on the hill. Garthwait allowed just three hits and two walks to go with nine strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

North Haven scored the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Dave Christoforo walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Gianni DiMartino, and scored on a single by senior Danny Cannavaciolo for a 1-0 lead. Cannavaciolo later came around to score when senior Reid Kankel hit a two-out single to make it 2-0. The Hornets got two men on in the fifth, but Garthwait worked out of trouble. With the tying run at the plate in the seventh, Garthwait got the last batter of the game to ground out and secure the win for North Haven.

On May 16, North Haven was back home to face North Branford and took a 6-4 defeat. North Branford scored four runs in the first inning, but North Haven tied the game by plating a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth. The Thunderbirds came back with two runs in the sixth inning and went on to get the win.

Senior Ben Sbabo pitched three innings of scoreless relief for North Haven. Senior John Gontarek and sophomore JJ Mazzaro both worked 1.2 scoreless innings in relief. Christoforo went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, while Cannavaciolo had a single with a walk and an RBI. Junior Owen Silk drove home the tying run on a squeeze bunt in the fifth inning.

The Indians are the No. 5 seed in the SCC Tournament and will play at No. 4 Notre Dame-West Haven in the quarterfinals at 3:45 p.m. on Monday, May 20. The winner of that game moves on to the semifinal round to play the winner of top-seeded Cheshire and No. 8 Cross at Piurek Field at West Haven High School on Tuesday, May 21 at either 4 or 7 p.m. The final will be held at that same site at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Indians were represented by several athletes at SCC West Sectional Championship that took place at Bowen Field in New Haven on May 15. North Haven scored 26 points and finished in eighth place as a team at the meet.

North Haven had a nice day in the throwing events, led by three juniors who scored points in the shot put. Matt Mullen took third place with a throw of 41 feet-3 inches, Luke Maruca placed fourth by throwing 41 feet, and fellow junior Dominic Borrelli finished seventh with a toss of 38-7.5. Mullen also claimed fifth place in the discus by launching a throw of 102 feet-5 inches. Sophomore Anthony Vigliotto finished 10th in the discus (95-5) and also came in 10th place for the javelin (115-2).

Senior Jacob Wurm cleared a height of 10 feet to finish fifth in the pole vault at the sectional meet. Senior Kevin Spencer finished seventh in the preliminaries of 110 high hurdles with a time of 18.14 seconds. Spencer also took 10th in the 300 intermediate hurdles at 48.92. Sophomore Luke Franco placed ninth in the triple jump by reaching a distance of 38-8.

North Haven’s 4x800 relay of senior Jack Opramolla, freshman Kevin Rourke, senior Jobin Vilayaveettil, and sophomore Patrick Rourke came in sixth place (8:51.84). The 4x100 relay of Franco, freshman Jack Pollard, sophomore Robert Vaughan, and junior Jeff Williston finished in seventh place (50.19).

Girls’ Tennis

North Haven finished the regular season with a record of 13-5 after winning one of its three matches during the final week. The Indians are competing in the SCC Tournament this week and have the Class M State Tournament after that.

The Indians lost a 5-2 contest against Lauralton Hall at North Haven Health & Racquet Club on May 13. Julia Migliorini earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 1 singles match, while freshman Ally Vollero prevailed 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

Two days later, the Indians hosted Cheshire at North Haven Athletic Complex and lost by the score of 4-3. Migliorini posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 1 singles, Vollero claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2, and junior Anna Wooton won by a 6-1, 6-1 final at No. 4 singles.

North Haven went on to notch a 4-3 victory versus Guilford in its regular-season finale. The match began on May 14, but was postponed midway through due to rain, and then resumed on May 18. Migliorini completed her perfect week by posting another 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. With the Indians trailing 3-1, Vollero (6-4, 6-3) and senior Lily Mezzi (6-0, 6-1) recorded victories at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, to tie it up. The outcome came down to the No. 4 singles match, where Wooton pulled through for a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory. Wooton was trailing 3-0 in the third set, but rallied for six-straight points to take the match and solidify the win for North Haven.

North Haven is the No. 6 seed in the SCC Tournament and will play at No. 3 Cheshire in a quarterfinal match on Monday, May 20 at 3:30 p.m. With a win, the Indians would face the winner of No. 2 Amity and No. 7 Foran in the semis at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21 at Yale University. The final takes place at Yale at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22.

Boys’ Tennis

North Haven dropped a 6-1 road contest against Fairfield Prep at Fairfield University in its regular-season finale on May 15. The Indians finished with a record of 11-7 for regular-season play. North Haven is competing in the SCC Tournament and the Class L State Championship this week.

The Indians enter the SCC bracket as the No. 8 seed and will play a quarterfinal match at top-seeded Hand at 4 p.m. on Monday, May 20. The winner advances to the semifinals to face either No. 4 Guilford or No. 5 Xavier at Yale University on Tuesday, May 21 at 1 p.m. The final is also at Yale and will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22.

Golf

The Indians took a 177-205 road loss against Lyman Hall at Wallingford Country Club on May 14. North Haven has a record of 8-6 entering the final week of the regular season.

Senior Ian Crowther turned in a score of 46 to lead North Haven. Fellow senior Alex Kirtland shot a 49, junior Julia Raposo scored a 54, and junior Elliot Rastkhane finished with a round of 56 for the Indians.

Boys’ Lacrosse

North Haven finished the regular season at 9-7 after taking defeats in final two games last week. Next up for the Indians is the Class M State Tournament, which gets underway this week.

North Haven lost a 12-9 contest in Shelton on May 13. Sophomore Kasey Mongillo scored five goals for the Indians. Senior Jack Broggi and junior Brian Mills both had a goal with an assist, while senior Matt Crisco and sophomore Kyle Nichols each added a goal.

Then on May 1, the Indians took an 8-6 loss against Xavier on Senior Night at North Haven Middle School. Mongillo scored four goals, junior Donny McInnis scored a goal and had two assists, and Mills had a goal with an assist for the Indians.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Indians lost road games against Branford and Cheshire last week. North Haven has a record of 5-10 with one contest remaining in the regular season.

North Haven dropped a 22-18 decision in Branford on May 14. Senior Annie Uyeki scored eight goals and had four assists for the Indians. Senior Molly Scarpa had three goals with an assist, while junior Callie Kessler also scored three goals. Sophomore Mariella Biceglia netted two goals, senior Meg Christoforo had a goal with an assist, and senior Quinn Kirby added a goal.

Two days later, the Indians took a 20-6 loss at Cheshire. Uyeki scored four goals, and Scarpa had a pair of goals for North Haven.
