North Haven Girls’ Track Takes 3rd Place at Sectionals

The North Haven girls’ outdoor track team turned in a top-notch performance at the SCC West Sectional Championship last week. The Indians took third place as a squad by scoring 100 points and also saw three first-place finishes in individual events at the meet, which was held at Bowen Field in New Haven on May 15. Senior Erica Marriott claimed first place in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, while fellow senior Giselle Zumerchik finished first in the 300 intermediate hurdles for North Haven.

Marriott won the 100-meter dash by placing ahead of East Haven’s Kisha Francois by the slimmest of margins in the final heat. In the preliminaries, Marriott took second place with a time of 12.50 seconds, while Francois had the fastest time with a 12.49. In the final, Marriott crossed the finish line with a time of 12.53 seconds to edge out Francois (12.54) by one one-hundredth of a second for the victory.

Marriott also beat out Francois in the 200 to win the event for the second year in a row at the West Sectional meet. Marriott ran a time of 25.38 seconds to place ahead of Francois, who finished with a time of 26.29.

Zumerchik won the 300 hurdles for the second straight year at sectionals by running a time of 47.03 seconds. The senior finished ahead of TayJana Greene of Career (48.76) for top honors in the event. In the 100 hurdles, Zumerchik placed second in the preliminaries with a 16.44 and then lowered her time to 16.24 while taking third in the final.

The Indians saw two athletes earn runner-up finishes at the meet. Senior Camille Sahirul claimed second place in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet-0.5 inches. Fellow senior Sarina Sandwell reached 35-4.5 to come in second place in the triple jump. Sahirul finished sixth in the triple jump at 33-10.

Junior Giuliana Ciarleglo finished third in the javelin with a throw of 85-10, while senior Katie Rogers threw a 75-7 to finish in sixth. Freshman Ada Forbes took fourth place in the 800 (2:30.94), junior Mikayla Mansur finished fourth for the pole vault (6-0), and junior Courtney McFarland placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 29 feet-11.5 inches.

North Haven received solid showings from all three of its relays. The 4x400 relay of Zumerchik, Sandwell, sophomore Sofia Fappiano, and Forbes finished in third (4:21.27); the 4x100 of junior Sammy Curcio, Sandwell, Sahirul, and Fappiano placed fourth (52.38); and the 4x800 of Forbes, sophomore Taya Stanley, senior Jackie Howlett, and senior Shannon Reilly came in fifth (11:26.19).

Junior Elizabeth DeVaux advanced to the finals of the 100 hurdles by placing seventh in the preliminary heat with a time of 18.80. DeVaux improved her time to 18.45 in the final to finish in sixth place overall. Freshman Brooke Waldron placed 10th in the prelims of the 100 hurdles (19.13) and was also 10th in the 300 hurdles (53.78). Rogers finished seventh in the high jump (4-4), and junior Samantha Helwig placed eighth in the discus (71-3) for the Indians.

North Haven is coming off a regular season that saw the Indians finish with an overall record of 11-2. The Indians also posted a mark of 4-0 in SCC Oronoque Division action to win the division title for the third year in a row. Up next for North Haven is the Class MM State Championship that takes place at Avon High School at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29.
