Bloss Runs to Two Titles at Sectionals; Several Indians’ Teams Competing in SCCs

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team started off its postseason by turning in several solid performances at the SCC East Sectional Championship last week. The Indians scored 43.5 points and finished in sixth place at the sectional meet, which was held at Bowen Field in New Haven on May 14.

Meredith Bloss took first place in the 1,600 and the 3,200 for Guilford. In the 1,600, Bloss ran a time of 5:21.86 to finish ahead of Shelton’s Alexandra Kenealy (5:24.07) for first place in the event. Bloss went on to record a time of 11:52.16 in the 3,200 to win the event ahead of runner-up Elizabeth Brown of Sheehan (12:02.91).

Clara Wiesler finished third in the 3,200 with a time of 12:03.66 for the Indians. Sofia Migani finished fourth for the high jump (4 feet-6 inches), took seventh in the triple jump (31-7.5), and placed eighth in the long jump (15-5). Gianna Siciliano took fifth in the 1,600 (5:32.69), while Julia Antony followed in sixth (5:36.27). Antony also finished sixth in the 3,200 with a 12:14.81.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Indians came in 10th place by scoring 26.5 points at last week’s SCC East Sectional Championship.

Guilford’s best individual performance came from Will Dinauer, who claimed fourth place in the 800 with a time of 2:07.43. Griffin Hughes took seventh place in the event with a 2:11.30. Mark Salib finished tied for fourth in the pole vault by clearing 11 feet, while Connor Rose placed fourth in the discus with a toss of 120 feet-6 inches.

Guilford’s 4x800 relay team of McKendry Eschinger, Thomas Gregory, Hughes, and Dinauer finished in fifth place (8:33.08). The 4x100 relay of Nicholas Celloto, Logan Roberts, Jaylen Dolmus, and Cade Yerkes came in seventh place (46.71), as did the 4x400 relay of Eschinger, Cameron Hubbard, Joseph Walters, and Gregory (3:37.27).

Girls’ Lacrosse

Guilford finished its regular season with a record of 14-2 after winning two of its three games last week. The Indians are competing in the SCC Tournament this week.

Guilford defeated Lauralton Hall by the final score of 17-6 on May 14. Catherine Larrow sparked the Indians’ offense by netting six goals in the victory. Nicolette Spotlow scored three goals, while Maddie Costantino and Hannah Tillier each had two goals. Maddie Epke, Nicole Tepley, and Sydney Cunningham added one goal apiece. Sydney Widlitz made 10 saves in net.

The Indians notched a 17-5 victory over North Branford on May 17. Spotlow scored five goals, while Epke had four goals for Guilford. Larrow scored three goals, Cunningham added a pair of goals, and Tepley, Costantino, and Tillier all had one goal. Widlitz made five saves in goal.

On May 18, Guilford took a 10-9 loss to Glastonbury in its regular-season finale.

The Indians earned the No. 2 seed in the SCC Tournament and have a first-round bye. Guilford is hosting a semifinal game against No. 3 Branford (9-8)/No. 6 Sheehan (13-4) on Tuesday, May 21 at 5 p.m. The winner advances to the final against either No. 1 Cheshire or No. 4 Hand at West Haven High School on Thursday, May 23 at 5:30 p.m.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Guilford split two games last week to go 13-3 for the regular season with the SCC Tournament up next.

The Indians notched an 8-5 victory over Cheshire on May 15. Guilford then took an 8-7 loss against Simsbury on May 18.

Guilford has a first-round bye in the SCC Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Indians will host No. 3 seed Xavier (13-4) in a semifinal matchup on Tuesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. The winner moves on to the final to play the winner of No. 1 Fairfield Prep (13-3) and No. 4 Hand (11-6) on Thursday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. at West Haven High School.

Golf

The Indians defeated Shelton last week to clinch the SCC Division II regular season title. Guilford now has a record of 13-3 on the year.

Guilford claimed the division crown by posting a 172-176 victory against Shelton on May 15. The next day, the Indians recorded a 154-219 win against Hillhouse.

Softball

Guilford concluded its regular season with a record of 7-13 after winning one of its three games last week. Guilford’s victory came in dramatic fashion when the Indians earned a 3-2 walk-off win in nine innings against Coginchaug in their regular-season finale.

The Indians took a 3-0 defeat against North Haven on May 14. Emily Torre broke up a no-hit bid by North Haven’s pitcher when she got a base hit up the middle in the top of the seventh inning.

Guilford lost a 6-3 decision to West Haven the following day. Ava Gladwin went 2-for-3 for the Indians, who saw Torre, Jess Smith, and Eva Ott Hill each drove home one run.

The Indians finished their regular season with a thrilling 3-2 win over Coginchaug in nine innings on May 17. Ema Signore pitched a complete game for the win, allowing two runs while striking out four. Gladwin, Torre, and Jill Batick each had a pair of hits to lead the Guilford offense.

Torre hit a two-run home run in the first inning to put Guilford on the board. In the bottom of the ninth, Signore drew a walk, Gladwin reached on a bunt single, and then Batick followed with another bunt single to load the bases. Leah Kornguth stepped up to the plate drove in the winning run to give the Indians the walk-off victory.

“We ended our season on a high note and, for the seniors, they ended their high school careers with a win,” Head Coach Meghan Wiese said. “I could not be prouder of the way they played.”

Boys’ Tennis

The Indians moved to 14-4 after losing their lone match of the week. Guilford took a 4-3 defeat versus Amity on May 15.

The 4th-seeded Indians are hosting a quarterfinal match in the SCC Tournament against No. 5 Xavier (11-7) on Monday, May 20 at 3:30 p.m. With a win, Guilford would advance to the semifinals to play either No. 1 Hand (19-0) or No. 8 North Haven (11-7) on Tuesday, May 21 at Yale University at 1 p.m. The final will be held at Yale on Wednesday, May 22 at 11 a.m.

Girls’ Tennis

Guilford concluded the 2019 regular season with an overall record of 7-11.

The Indians squeaked out a 4-3 victory over Shelton on May 14. Guilford then lost to Law by that same score the next day. Guilford finished its regular season by playing two matches on May 18. The Indians took a 4-3 defeat to North Haven and lost a 5-2 contest versus Foran.
