The Westbrook baseball team grabbed three wins last week in as many games. The victories moved the Knights’ record to 6-11 on the season as they head into the home stretch.
On May 7, Westbrook hosted Old Lyme and rallied late to come away with a 4-3 victory. The Wildcats scored a run in the top of the first inning and two more in the second to take a 3-0 lead over Westbrook. The Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on two more in the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Westbrook held on in the seventh for the win.
Quinn Ernst went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs, and two RBI, while Cameron Marshall notched a hit, a walk, and scored two runs. Dan Perreault also provided a base hit. Marshall threw a complete game to pick up the win and he struck out five.
The next day, the Knights scored a 12-7 home win over Hale-Ray. The Noises got a run in the first, but Westbrook took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning. Hale-Ray tied the game with a run in the second, and then took a 3-2 lead with another in the third. The Knights got back on top with a pair in the bottom of the third, for a 4-3 advantage, and Hale-Ray scored again in the fifth to knot the score at 4-4. In the bottom of the fifth, Westbrook went off to the tune of seven runs to take a commanding 11-4 lead, and cruised to the 12-7 victory.
Connor Cruz went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, and David McCain added two hits, a run, and an RBI. Marshall supplied a pair of hits, three runs and an RBI, while Zach True knocked two hits along with two runs. Kyle Robison had a hit, a walk, two runs, and two RBI. Cruz got the win, pitching six innings and striking out six batters, McCain finished the seventh inning in relief.
On May 9, Westbrook grabbed a 2-0 home victory against HMTCA. Kyle Robison pitched a complete game shutout for the win and struck out 10 batters in the process.
The Knights got both of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. Marshall and Ernst had a hit and an RBI each. McCain had a hit and scored a run, while Cruz walked and came around to score.
Softball
Westbrook lost two games last week in as many games, and with the losses, the Knights’ record dropped to 1-14 on the year.
On May 7, Westbrook dropped a 17-5 road game against East Hampton. After scoring two runs in the top of the first, the Knights fell behind 4-2 through one inning. In the second, the Bellringers put seven runs on the board to pull away for good. Madison Marshall notched two hits, two RBI, and a run. Jamie Merola had a hit, a walk, two runs, and an RBI.
The next day, the Knights lost a 23-2 home contest against Hale-Ray. The Noises had eight runs on the board before Westbrook scored, and Hale-Ray pulled further away as the innings wore on. Merola had two base hits in the loss, and Alivia Ciarcia, Carolyn Bauman, Marshall, Juliana Gerena, and Samantha Nunez each added a hit.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
Westbrook hosted a tri-meet against Morgan and Haddam-Killingworth last week before heading to Old Saybrook for the Running Rams Invitational.
On May 7, the Knights had some impressive days battling Morgan and H-K. A major highlight included senior captain Avery Bauman breaking Westbrook’s school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.87. Elizabeth Gallagher took first place in the 400 with a state qualifying time of 1:04.41. Also, Gallagher turned in a time of 13.19 in the 100. Megan Greaves won the high jump clearing 4 feet-four inches, and in the triple jump, she recorded a distance of 28-1.5.
Senior captain Kelly Donlan took first overall in both shot put at 32 feet-4.5 inches and discus at 86 feet-1 inch. In javelin, Donlan reached a new personal record of 91-4.
Riley Metcalfe finished with a time of 14.0 in the 100, and in the 400, she notched a mark of 1:09.72. The 4x800-meter relay quartet of senior captain Katherine Dahl, Marguerite Bartlett, Brooke Neri, and Bauman turned in a time of 11:29.1. Cierra Brundage had a time of 6:43 in the 1,600. Marguerite Bartlett turned in a time of 2:56 in the 800 and 14:00 in the 3,200. In the 200, Micayla Malchiodi finished at 33.5, and Natasha Mattera ran a personal record of 33.87 in the same event. Mattera also scored a personal best in the long jump with a length of 12 feet-4.5 inches for fifth place overall. Lauren Horne threw a distance of 62-7 in javelin.
On May 10, the Knights finished in ninth place out of 22 teams with a total of 28 points at the Running Rams Invitational. Donlan was the top scorer with 16 points for the Knights including a first place throw of 33-11 in shot put and third place in discus with a heave of 88-1. The 4x800 team of Dahl, Bartlett, Neri, and Bauman notched a time of 10:57 to place fifth and scoring four points for the Knights. Gallagher scored four points for Westbrook when she finished fifth in the 200 with a time of 27.81. In the 100, Gallagher finished in seventh with a time of 13.76, for two points.
Bauman finished in eighth place in a hotly contested 800, running a new personal record of 2:33.35 for a point. Greaves finished eighth in high jump clearing a height of 4-6.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
Westbrook hosted Haddam-Killingworth and Morgan in a tri-meet, then participated in the Running Rams Invitational last week.
On May 7, versus H-K and Morgan, Luca Troop earned a spot at states in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.41 seconds. Troop also cleared a height of 5 feet-4 inches to win the high jump.
Zach Boardman came in third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.48 seconds. Carlos Espinoza had a time of 5:46.1 in the 1,600. In the 400, Gianni Adorno finished at 1:05.7, and Landon McKeith clocked in at 1:06.4. Fresh off learning the event, Ben Wallace flung a distance of 76 feet-10 inches in javelin.
On May 10, the Knights competed at the Running Rams Invitational. Troop took the final scoring spot at eighth place in the 200 with a time of 24.33.
Girls’ Tennis
The Knights took a win and a loss in their two games last week. Westbrook’s record on the season moved to 11-5 with the results.
On May 6, Westbrook netted a 7-0 road win against East Hampton. In the singles matches, Sara Farnoli grabbed a 6-4, 6-1 victory in the No. 1 match, while Sarah Davey scored a 7-5, 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot. Julia Farnoli won a 6-1, 6-3 match at No. 3, and Gabriella Koplas earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 4 position.
In doubles, the No. 1 duo of Savannah Marshall and Lexi Koplas won a 6-0, 6-1 decision. In the No. 2 match, Olivia Archer and Alex Young grabbed the 6-1, 6-0 victory, and No. 3 pair, Juliana Fabrizi and Gianni Salisbury scored a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Two days later, Westbrook lost a 5-2 home match against Old Lyme. The Knights received another victory from Sara Farnoli in a 6-3, 6-1 affair. Julia Farnoli won her first match 6-2 and then took the win by default in the second match.
Boys’ Tennis
The Knights played two matches last week against and split their decisions. With these results, Westbrook’s record moves to 12-4 on the year.
On May 6, the Knights hosted East Hampton and scored a 7-0 win against the Bellringers. Two days later, the headed to Old Lyme where they took a 5-2 road loss against the Wildcats.
