The Morgan boys’ lacrosse team played two games last week and scored wins in both contests. The victories improved the Huskies’ record to 8-6 on the year and also reserved a spot for them in the Class S State Tournament.
On May 7, Morgan headed to Cromwell and beat up on the Panthers in a 15-2 road win. This victory put the Huskies into the state tourney draw. Morgan jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter and grew that advantage to 11-1 by halftime. After that, the Huskies easily cruised to the victory.
Tim Lichack had a nice offensive effort with five goals and two assists. Zak Johnson tallied two goals and two assists in the win, while Matt Lee also added two goals and two helpers. Sean Fitzgerald provided two goals and one assist, while Aiden Madura and Ryan Caldwell netted a goal apiece. Todd Morin and Liam Trahant both supplied a single assist. Matt Luchuk made five saves in net for the Huskies, and Morgan outshot Cromwell 29-15.
Two days later, the Huskies picked up a 10-3 road win over Old Saybrook. Morgan got out to big lead early for the second game in a row scoring seven goals in the first half while holding the Rams scoreless. Morgan added three more goals in the third, and Old Saybrook scored three in the final quarter for the 10-3 final.
Lee scored four goals and dished one assist, and Lichack netted three goals. Caldwell had one goal and provided three assists, while Johnson also passed out three helpers. Ford Pender supplied a goal and an assist, and Fitzgerald scored a goal. The Huskies split time between goalies Luchuk (3 saves) and Ben Lichack (4 saves). Morgan outshot the Rams 33-10.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Morgan played a couple of home games at the Indian River Complex last week and took defeats in both of them. The losses move the Huskies’ record to 5-8 on the season. Though Morgan lost both games, junior Maddie Stopkoski scored her 100th career goal with the Huskies.
On May 7, Morgan lost in a tight 17-16 home decision versus Fitch. Each team battled back and forth, with neither squad mounting a sizable lead. The score was 10-8 in Fitch’s advantage at halftime, and Morgan wasn’t able to outpace the Falcons. With the game tied 16-16 in the fourth, Fitch scored with 18 seconds left to go up for good.
Maddie Stopkoski provided five goals and two assists, while Joelle Vuilleumier and Lindsay Naracci each notched three goals. Erin Lindsay netted two goals, and Carley Schmidt added a goal and two assists. Aryn McQuarrie and Olivia McCray supplied a goal apiece. Fitch outshot Morgan 37-34, and Cassidy Shepard made 18 saves in the net for the Huskies.
Two days later, Morgan hosted Old Saybrook and took a 19-9 loss versus the Rams. The game remained close through the first half, with Old Saybrook holding a 7-5 edge at halftime, but the Rams pulled away in the second half to take the victory.
Stopkoski scored six goals for Morgan and came away with her 100th career score for the Huskies. Narracci added a pair of goals and an assist, while McCray hit the back of the net once for a goal. Shepard had 10 saves for Morgan.
Golf
The Morgan golf team played four matches last week and earned a win on the slate. With these results, the Huskies record moved to 5-8 on the season.
On May 6, Morgan dropped a 149-196 road match against Hand at the Madison Country Club. The next day, Morgan earned a 179-208 road win over East Hampton at the Black Birch Golf Club in East Haddam. On May 8, the Huskies hosted a three-team match at the Clinton Country Club and lost to Coginchaug (167-198) and Waterford (175-198).
Softball
The Huskies played three games last week and lost all of them. The defeats move Morgan’s record to 4-14 on the year.
On May 6, the Huskies took a 14-0 home loss against North Branford. Two days later, Morgan lost an 8-4 road decision versus Haddam-Killingworth. On May 11, the Huskies headed to Durham where they lost a 16-3 road game against Cognchaug.
Baseball
The Huskies played three games last week and took home one win among them. With these results, Morgan moves to a 7-10 record on the year.
On May 6, the Huskies lost a 9-4 home contest versus North Branford. Morgan looked good after scoring two runs in each the third and fourth innings to take a 4-1 lead, but the Thunderbirds went off in the top of the sixth and scored eight runs for a 9-4 final.
AJ Fritz had a pair of hits and a run scored, while Mike Zingarella supplied two hits and an RBI. Ryan Hromadka added a hit, a run, and two RBI, and Brady Fritz and Kyle Burt supplied a hit and a run each.
Two days later, Morgan scored a 3-0 road win over Haddam-Killingworth. Robbie Zirlis pitched a complete game shutout to grab a win on the mound. The Huskies scored single runs in the first, third, and sixth innings to account for their offense on the day. AJ Fritz went 3-for-4, while Zingarella had two hits, a run, and an RBI. Garret Garbinski went a perfect 2-for-2 and scored a run. Ryan Egan supplied a hit and scored a run, while Hromadka drove in a run. Mike Menacho, Chase Morris, and Kyle Suraci had a hit apiece.
On May 10, Morgan dropped a 5-2 home game to East Lyme. The Vikings scored all five of their runs by the fourth inning, and the Huskies could only draw within three after putting two runs up in the fifth.
Fritz provided a hit, a run, and an RBI, while Zingarella added a hit and an RBI. Menacho had a base hit, and Garbinski walked and scored a run.
Girls’ Tennis
The Huskies had a busy week of four matches and took home one win on the slate. With these results, Morgan’s record on the year moved to 4-12 on the year.
On May 6, Morgan notched a 4-3 road win over Haddam-Killingworth. In the singles matches, Rebecca Walton netted a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory at the No. 1 position. At the No. 4 spot, Maddie Tuccitto scored a 6-3, 6-1 win. As for doubles, the No. 1 duo of Rebecca Arribas Cockley and Melanie Coretti nabbed a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win. The No. 2 pair of Ingrid Rodriguez and Sydney Fratamico earned at 5-7, 7-6, 6-0 victory.
The next day, the Huskies took a narrow 4-3 home defeat versus Cromwell. Morgan received its three wins from Taylor Gregory (6-3, 6-2) in the No. 3 singles match, Tuccitto (3-6, 7-6, 7-5) at the No. 4 spot, and the No. 2 pair of Fratamico and Misha Rai (6-2, 6-2).
On May 8, Morgan lost a 6-1 road match against North Branford. The next day, the Huskies dropped a 6-1 home contest versus Old Lyme.
