North Haven Baseball, Boys’ Tennis Qualify for States; Girls’ Track Claims Oronoque Crown

Baseball

The North Haven baseball team solidified its place in the Class L State Tournament by posting a 7-5 home victory against Hand on May 6. The Indians won two of three on the road later in the week to move to 10-7 with one week left in the regular season.

North Haven hosted Hand at DeMayo Ballfield and defeated the Tigers 7-5 to qualify for states. The Indians scored five runs in the second inning and then tacked on runs in the third and fourth to take a 7-1 lead. The Tigers scored four in the sixth, but North Haven held on to beat Hand for the second time this year.

Senior Hunter Garthwait pitched a complete game in which he scattered 11 hits with no walks while allowing five runs, just two of which were earned, to go with seven strikeouts. At the plate, junior Dave Christoforo went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored, senior Matt Soloman was 2-for-4 with an RBI, junior Mason Balmer had a single with two walks, one run, and one RBI; and senior Reid Kankel drew a walk, scored a run, and drove in two runs.

On May 8, the Indians took a 14-4 road loss against SCC Quinnipiac Division opponent Cheshire. North Haven finished at 3-3 in the division this year. The game was tied 4-4 entering the bottom of the fifth, when Cheshire scored eight runs to go up 12-4. After the Rams scored two more in the sixth, the game was called due to the mercy rule. Senior Gianni DiMartino went 3-for-3, junior Owen Silk was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Balmer doubled and scored a run, and Kankel scored two runs to go with a walk and a stolen base.

The following day, North Haven claimed a 6-1 win at North Branford. Senior Ben Sbabo picked up his first victory on the year by pitching 5.2 innings, allowing just one run on five hits and one walk. Sophomore JJ Mazzaro worked 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Soloman went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs, and an RBI; DiMartino went 2-for-4 with a two RBI and a stolen base; and junior Matt DeRosa was 2-for-3 with a double, one walk, two runs, one RBI, and two stolen bases. Kankel doubled with two walks and a run scored, while Christoforo had a single with a walk and an RBI. Senior Jack Peruso stole home during the seventh inning.

The Indians closed out their week by notching a 7-6 victory in a game Amity on May 11. North Haven held a 7-3 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning, where the Spartans scored three runs to make it a one-run game. With the winning run at the plate, Mazzaro got the last batter of the game to ground out and secure the victory for the Indians. Mazzaro pitched 2.1 innings to get the save in relief of Garthwait, who earned his third win of the year by tossing 4.1 innings.

Christoforo went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Garthwait was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI, Soloman drew two walks, scored three runs, and stole a base; Silk had a double with a walk, a run, an RBI, and a steal; and Balmer doubled to go with a walk and a run.

Boys’ Tennis

North Haven qualified for the Class L State Championship for the sixth straight season after winning three of its five matches last week. The Indians are 11-6 with one match left in the regular season.

Following a 6-1 loss at Amity on May 5, the Indians made states by earning a 6-1 home victory over West Haven the next day. Senior Max Petruzziello earned an 8-6 win at No. 2 singles, senior Matt McCarthy notched an 8-2 win at No. 3 singles, and senior Matteo Franco won an 8-4 decision at No. 4. North Haven’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Quinn Dallai and Tanner Powell posted an 8-2 victory, the No. 2 team of sophomore Matt Labanara and freshman Ben Rudikoff also prevailed 8-2, and the No. 3 team of junior Laekhram Singh and sophomore Chase DiCarlo won an 8-0 shutout.

On May 7, the Indians claimed a 5-2 road win versus Notre Dame-West Haven. Senior Nick Cristante won via default at No. 1 singles, while Petruzziello (8-6), McCarthy (8-6), and Franco (8-0) also won their singles matches. Dallai and Powell netted an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles, plus the No. 3 team of senior Jake Barra and DiCarlo won an 8-3 decision.

The day after that, the Indians hosted Sheehan and won by a 5-2 final. Cristante (6-0, 6-1), McCarthy (7-5, 3-6, 10-4), and Franco (6-4, 6-3) were victorious on the singles court. Dallai and Powell won 6-4, 6-1, while Barra and DiCarlo notched a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Then on May 9, the Indians took a 7-0 defeat against Xavier at home.

Girls’ Tennis

North Haven improved to 12-3 by winning two of three last week. The Indians lost to Hand, but came back to defeat Foran and Mercy and gain momentum entering the last week of the regular season.

The Indians took a 6-1 home loss to Hand on May 6. Senior Julia Migliorini recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 singles match for North Haven.

The following afternoon, the Indians claimed a 6-1 victory over Foran in a home match. Migliorini posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 1 singles, freshman Ally Vollero won a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 2 singles, and junior Anna Wooton netted a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 4. North Haven’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Zoe Bowerman and junior Kara Stevens notched a 6-2, 6-2 win, the No. 2 team of senior Daniella Bryson and junior Jess Tran won a 6-3, 6-2 decision, and the No. 3 duo of senior Yasmin Mohamed and junior Claire Looney recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

On May 10, North Haven recorded a 5-2 road win versus Mercy. Migliorini (6-1, 6-0), Vollero (6-2, 6-3), and senior Lily Mezzi (6-0, 6-0) recorded straight-set wins at the top three singles spots. At No. 4 singles, Wooton won a marathon match that came down to a third-set tiebreaker, prevailing by the final score of 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Bowerman and Stevens claimed a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles for the Indians.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

North Haven finished its regular season by hosting a tri-meet against Platt Tech and SCC Oronoque Division opponent Career at Vanacore Field on May 8. The Indians prevailed versus Career to win their third-straight Oronoque title with a divisional record of 4-0, in addition to defeating Platt Tech to finish at 11-2 overall for the year.

Senior Camille Sahirul took first place in the 400 (62.8), the long jump (15-5), and the triple jump (34-3) for North Haven. Fellow senior Giselle Zumerchik won both the 100 hurdles (16.8) and the 300 hurdles (48.4), while junior Reagan Forbes placed first in the 1,600 (6:10) and the 3,200 (13:41). Also finishing first were freshman Ada Forbes in the 800 (2:37), senior Katie Rogers in the high jump (4-6), junior Giuliana Ciarleglio for the javelin (95-2), junior Courtney McFarland in the shot put (30-4), and Samantha Helwig in the discus (65-3).

North Haven’s 4x100 relay of junior Sammy Curcio, senior Sarina Sandwell, Sahirul, and sophomore Paula Fappiano took first with a time of 52.0. The 4x800 relay of Ada Forbes, sophomore Taya Stanley, senior Jackie Howlett, and senior Shannon Reilly posted a time of 11:28 to claim first place.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Indians wrapped up the regular season with two meets at Vanacore Field last week. North Haven came away with five victories on the week to finish with a record of 8-6.

On May 8, North Haven defeated SCC Oronoque Division squad Career (138-12), as well as Platt Tech (142-8) and Amistad (117-33). North Haven went 2-2 in the Oronoque this year.

Senior Chris Moran finished first in the long jump (18-4.5) and the triple jump (38-3.5) for North Haven. Senior Kevin Spencer won the 110 high hurdles (18.4) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (48.4), senior Jacob Wurm placed first in the 400 (53.8) and the pole vault (9-6), and sophomore Patrick Rourke took first in the 1,600 (4:58) and the 3,200 (10:53.9). The Indians also received victories from junior Luke Maruca in the shot put (40-0.5), sophomore Nick Howlett in the 800 (2:24.8), sophomore Anthony Vigliotto in the discus (93-2), and freshman MJ DeVilliers, Jr., in the javelin (110-10).

North Haven’s 4x400 relay of senior Jack Opramolla, sophomore Luke Franco, sophomore Eduardo Cienfuegos, and freshman Marco DiBenedetto took first place (3:58.9), as did the 4x800 of freshman Justin Geremia, Rourke, Howlett, and senior Alex Savenelli (9:56.1).

Two days later, the Indians earned a 136-14 versus West Haven and a 108-42 victory over Stratford in another home meet. Finishing first for North Haven were Rourke in the 800 (2:15.3) and the 1,600 (4:54.3), Moran in the long jump (18-0.75) and triple jump (38-3), Spencer in the 110 hurdles (17.9), Vigliotto in the discus (101-10), junior Matt Mullen in the shot put (42-8), sophomore Cameron Cargan in the high jump (5-4), Wurm in the pole vault (10-0), and senior Jobin Valiyaveettil in the 3,200 (12:00). North Haven’s 4x800 relay of junior Aidan Bergin, Howlett, Opramolla, and Valiyaveettil placed first at 9:10.3. The 4x400 of Spencer, Opramolla, Wurm, and freshman Jack Pollard posted a time of 3:55.8 to take first place.

Boys’ Lacrosse

North Haven won one of its three contests last week and now has a record of 9-5. The Indians, who have qualified for the Class M State Tournament, have two games remaining in the regular season.

On May 6, North Haven lost a 6-3 road game against Hand. Two days later, the Indians hosted Fairfield Prep and took a 14-3 defeat. Senior Jack Broggi scored two goals, junior Donny McInnis had a goal with an assist, plus junior Brian Mills and sophomore Kasey Mongillo added one assist apiece. Sophomore Gino Schiavo made 11 saves.

North Haven closed out the week by netting an 11-7 victory against Bacon Academy in a home game on May 10.

Girls’ Lacrosse

North Haven moved to 5-8 after winning one of three games in recent action. The Indians defeated Lauralton Hall, before taking defeats against Mercy and Masuk last week. North Haven can qualify for the Class M State Tournament by winning two of its final three regular-season games.

The Indians notched a 12-10 home win against Lauralton Hall on May 7. The game was tied 7-7 entering the second half, where North Haven outscored the Crusaders by a 5-3 margin. Senior Annie Uyeki scored four goals and had four assists for the Indians. Fellow senior Meg Christoforo scored six goals to go with one assist. Junior Callie Kessler had a goal with an assist, while senior Jillian Rowland added a goal. Senior Casey Kross made five saves in net.

On May 9, the Indians hosted Mercy and took a 16-10 defeat versus the Tigers.

Two days later, North Haven traveled to Monroe to face non-conference opponent Masuk and dropped a 13-8 decision. Uyeki scored five goals, while senior Quinn Kirby, junior Madison Fredericks, and junior Callie Kessler added one goal apiece.

Golf

North Haven took four recent defeats to move to 8-5.

North Haven lost to Guilford 161-202 in a home match at Tradition Golf Club on May 6. The following day, the Indians scored a 202 and took losses against Notre Dame-West Haven (159) and Sheehan (188) in a tri-match at Farms Country Club. On May 8, North Haven dropped a 164-185 decision versus Law at Orange Hills Country Club. Senior Alex Kirtland finished with a score of 39 for the Indians. Junior Julia Raposo (47), junior Caleb Norris (48), and senior Shane McDonald (51) were North Haven’s other golfers on the day.
