Hand Baseball Takes Division Crown; Girls’ Tennis Completes Perfect Regular Season

Baseball

The Hand baseball team claimed the SCC Oronoque Division title with an unblemished record in divisional play by earning a one-run win versus Hamden last week. The Tigers, who also lost to North Haven and defeated Fairfield Prep, have an overall record of 14-4 on the season.

Hand lost a 7-5 contest against North Haven on May 6. Austin Doyle went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Tigers.

Two days later, Hand scratched out a 1-0 victory over Hamden to win Oronoque crown with a mark of 8-0 in the division. Liam Wallace pitched a complete game shutout with three strikeouts to lead Hand to the win. Will Kleinhenz had two hits and scored the only run of the game on Julian Banerji’s RBI. Banerji also threw out a Hamden runner at home plate from center field in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Tigers completed their week by defeating Fairfield Prep by a 5-2 score on May 10.

Softball

Hand improved to 10-7 following a big week that saw the Tigers defeat their crosstown rival, while knocking another team from the ranks of the unbeaten.

The Tigers claimed a 9-5 victory over Guilford on May 6. Two days later, Hand dealt West Haven its first loss of the season by earning a 4-1 win versus the Blue Devils in SCC Quinnipiac Division action. The Tigers finished with a record of 6-2 in divisional play with this victory. Christina Coric picked up the win in the circle and also helped her cause by getting two hits to go with a run scored. Gina Ciotti had two base hits with an RBI for the Tigers.

On May 10, Hand lost a 17-1 contest against North Haven.

Girls’ Tennis

Hand finished its regular season with a record of 17-0 after netting four victories in last week’s action.

Hand defeated North Haven 6-1 on May 6, earned a 7-0 win against Sacred Heart Academy 7-0 on May 7, beat Guilford by that same final the following day, and then blanked Law by a 7-0 score on May 9.

The Tigers received multiples singles victories froEileen Chen, Annie Barrett, and Lindsay Riordan, and Sam Riordan on the week. Catherine Aranow, Breanna Colonese-DiBello, Ella Scarice, Paige Van Ostenbridge, Bella Vejar, Claire Langille, and Anna Lang all contributed to wins on the doubles court. Scarice earned her first varsity victory for Hand during the week.

Boys’ Tennis

The Tigers added five more triumphs to their tally and are now 16-0 this spring.

Hand dispatched Xavier by a 5-2 final on May 6. The Tigers then edged out Guilford by a 4-3 score on May 7, clinching the win with a 6-0, 6-4 victory from Josh Israel in the No. 1 singles match.

Hand posted a 7-0 shutout over West Haven on May 8 and then defeated Cheshire by that same score the following day. On May 11, Hand claimed a 5-2 win over Fairfield Prep.

Boys’ Golf

Hand picked up three more wins last week to move to 11-2 this spring.

Hand dispatched Morgan by the score of 149-196 on May 6. Aidan Stuart earned medalist honors by shooting two-over-par 36 for the Tigers. Matthew Doyle scored a 37, while Conner Quinn and Michael McKeon both finished with 38s.

The next day, the Tigers defeated Branford 154-193. Bennett was the medalist with a 36, and Doyle shot a 37. Stuart hit for a round of 39, plus Michael McKeon and Conner Quinn both turned in scorecards of 42.

Hand edged out Xavier by a 150-153 final on May 8. Doyle led the Tigers to their victory with a two-under-par 33. Bennett followed a score of 38, while Stuart shot a 39, and McKeon finished with a 40.

Girls’ Golf

Hand stands at 5-3 after splitting a pair of matches this past week.

The Tigers claimed a 227-253 win over Sacred Heart Academy on May 6. Bella Larizza was the medalist of the match with her low round of 51.

Hand then took a 205-233 defeat versus Lauralton Hall on May 7.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Tigers improved to 10-5 after winning two of three in recent action.

Hand doubled up North Haven for a 6-3 victory on May 6. Luke Conway and Sean Scully each had two goals, Tripp Bordiere also scored a pair of goals, while Jack Flanagan and Conway both had one assist in the win. Griffin Fitzmaurice made 12 saves for Hand, which outshot the Indians by a 28-16 differential.

The Tigers followed up that victory by earning a 4-3 win versus Notre Dame-West Haven on May 8. Flanagan, Bordiere, Scully, and Liam McParland scored Hand’s goals in the game. Fitzmaurice made 15 saves as Hand won the shots-on-goal battle by a slim 19-18 margin.

On May 11, Hand dropped a 6-5 decision versus Weston.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Tigers lost two contests last week and are now 7-7.

Hand took a 13-12 loss to East Lyme on May 7. Three days later, Hand dropped an 11-10 decision versus Conard.
