Guilford Baseball Gets Big Win Over Amity; Lacrosse Squads Continue to Roll

Baseball

The Guilford baseball team notched a huge victory versus Amity in SCC Housatonic Division action last week. The Indians, who also defeated Cross and took a loss to Cheshire, have a record of 10-7 on the year.

The Indians started their week by earning a 5-4 win over Amity 5-4 on May 8. Ben Panagoulias and Mike Stebbins each had two RBI, while Jack Strand had three hits to go with one RBI for Guilford. Panagoulias also made a diving catch in left field to save the game when Amity had the bases loaded with two outs. Zach Samson pitched six strong innings to pick up the win on the mound. Kevin Ciardiello finished out the game to get the save.

“This was a complete team victory over a tremendous Amity team. Our guys worked really hard at practice, and that carried over into the game,” Head Coach Brian Hayden said. “Zach was great on the mound. He mixed his pitches well and was able to make big pitches when he needed them. Our defense was outstanding. We told our guys that we belong in these games, now go prove it, and they did that.”

The next day, Guilford posted a 12-0 shutout versus Housatonic opponent Cross to finish with a record of 6-2 in divisional play. On May 10, the Indians lost a 10-6 contest against Cheshire.

Softball

Guilford has a record of 6-11 following a busy week that saw the Indians play five games. Guilford also finished at 5-3 in SCC Oronoque Division play this season.

The Indians lost a 9-5 final against Hand on May 6. Jordyn Goldstein went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Guilford. Allie Petonito added an RBI double and two walks.

Guilford dropped 3-2 contest to Ellington the next day. Leah Kornguth went 2-for-3 with a triple. Ava Gladwin hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning that gave Guilford the lead. Ema Signore pitched a complete game for the Indians, striking out six.

On May 8, the Indians lost to Lyman Hall by the final score of 4-3 in Oronoque Division game. Goldstein went 2-for-3 with a pair of homers, three RBI, and two runs scored. Her second home run of the day came in the top of seventh to tie the game at 3-3.

Two days after that, Guilford took a 13-3 loss to Cheshire. Mary Evans was 2-for-3 with a triple and run scored, Eva Ott Hill went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, and Emily Torre hit a two-RBI double.

Then on May 11, the Indians prevailed by a 9-0 final in a rematch with Lyman Hall. Signore pitched a complete-game shutout for Guilford. Goldstein went 3-for-4 and smacked a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Kornguth also went 3-for-4 in the win. Jill Batick hit a bases-clearing triple in the second inning to help Guilford finish with a winning record in the division this year.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Guilford improve to 12-1 on the season following two more wins this past week.

The Indians defeated Mercy by the final tally of 19-9 on May 7. Catherine Larrow led the offensive output with six goals scored in the victory. Nicolette Spotlow and Maddie Epke notched three goals apiece for Guilford. Hannah Tillier scored two goals, plus Maddie Costantino, Taylor Farace, and Caroline Fitzgerald each added one goal. Sydney Widlitz made six saves in net.

On May 9, Guilford posted its sixth straight victory by earning an 11-3 win versus Southington.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Indians recorded three more wins last week and are now 12-2 this spring.

Guilford claimed a 14-10 victory over Xavier on May 6. The Indians then upended Trumbull by an 11-6 final on May 9. Two days later, Guilford came away with a 12-5 victory versus Barlow.

Golf

Guilford ran its record to 11-3 after putting together a masterful week on the links.

Guilford defeated North Haven 161-202 on May 6. The next day, the Indians edged out Lyman Hall by the slimmest of margins, wining 181-182. On May 8, Guilford scored a 155 to sweep a meet against Cross (195), East Haven (201), and Hillhouse (218).

Boys’ Tennis

The Indians won four of their five matches last week and now stand at 14-3 on the season.

Guilford defeated Branford by the score of 6-1 on May 6. The Indians lost a 4-3 decision against Hand the next day, then defeated Xavier by that same 4-3 score the following afternoon. On May 9, Guilford earned a 6-1 win versus Foran. Two days later, the Indians netted a 5-2 victory over Shelton.

Girls’ Tennis

Guilford has a mark of 6-8 after losing two of its last three matches.

The Indians recorded a 6-1 win against Sacred Heart Academy on May 6. Guilford then took a 7-0 defeat to Hand on May 8. The day after that, the Indians lost to Lauralton Hall by a 7-0 score.

Crew

The Indians finished their regular season with a couple of solid performances during the first week of May.

On May 5, Guilford competed against E.O. Smith in its regular-season finale at home on Lake Quonnipaug. Racing in steady rain, the girls’ varsity eight boat came in first place with a time of 5:27.55. The second varsity eight and the girls’ first novice eight also won with times 6:00.97 and 6:00.89, respectively. The girls’ novice four boat came in second place at 7:57.64. The boys’ varsity four placed second with a time of 5:53.04, and their novice four came in first at 5:54.93.

Previously, on May 1, Guilford fared well in a regatta with Avon at Lake Quonnipaug. The boys’ first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four came in first place with times 4:41.30, 4:58.60, and 5:28.50, respectively. The boys’ novice eight finished second by two seconds at 5:00.90. The girls’ first varsity eight, first varsity four, and novice eight took first place with times of 5:15.60, 6:23.10, and 4:59.20, respectively. The girls’ novice four finished in second in 6:58.
