Talbott Earns 300th Win After H-K Softball Makes States; Boys’ Lacrosse Also Qualifies

Softball

The Haddam-Killingworth softball team qualified for the Class M State Tournament during a week that saw Head Coach Jeff Talbott notch his 300th career victory with the program. The Cougars, who won all three of their games last week and are now 9-6 on the year, have made states in 41 of the past 42 seasons.

H-K edged out Cromwell by a 6-5 final on May 6. Shannon Nelson had two hits and two RBI, including the game-tying RBI in the bottom of seventh inning. With the bases loaded and the score tied at 5, Crystal Lentz drove home the winning run for the Cougars. Chloe DiStasio had an RBI single and a sacrifice fly RBI to help the cause. Faith Torello was the winning pitcher in relief for H-K.

The Cougars punched their postseason ticket with an 8-4 triumph over Morgan on May 8. H-K scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead. Faith Mauri had a big hit in the frame with a two-run double. Megan Butler added an RBI single in the fifth. In the sixth inning, Mauri reached on an infield single, stole second, and later scored on a wild pitch.

Talbott earned his 300th win at Haddam-Killingworth when the Cougars posted a 7-1 win over Canton on May 10. Brooke LaTouche pitched a complete game for H-K, allowing only four hits with four strikeouts. Kat McQueeney had a triple and a double to go with two runs scored.

Baseball

The Cougars came away with one win in three games last week and are now 13-4.

H-K took a 13-4 loss to Cromwell on May 6. Jon Civiello tripled and homered for the Cougars.

On May 8, H-K lost to Morgan by a 4-0 score. Sam Erskine had a hit in the defeat.

H-K then defeated Windsor Locks by a 7-1 final on May 10. Alec Erskine pitched five strong innings, striking out five, to get his third win on the year. Sam Erskine had two hits and two RBI for H-K.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Cougars secured a berth in the Class S State Tournament after recording four victories last week. H-K has a record of 8-4 on the year.

H-K shut out Holy Cross by a 15-0 score on May 6 and then netted a 9-7 win over Old Lyme the following day. The Cougars locked up their playoff spot with a 17-1 victory over Suffield on May 8. Two days later, H-K earned its sixth-straight win by posting an 8-0 shutout versus Vinal Tech-Goodwin Tech.

Girls’ Lacrosse

H-K earned its first two victories of the season last week.

The Cougars dropped a 23-12 decision against Old Lyme on May 7. The next day, H-K notched its first win by edging out Suffield by the final score of 15-14. Then on May 11, the Cougars earned a 17-8 win versus Holy Cross to improve to 2-12 on the year.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Cougars claimed victories against Morgan and Westbrook on May 7 to finish with a record of 6-0 on the regular season.

H-K defeated Westbrook by the score of 143-7 and earned a 113-17 win against Morgan. Leading the way for H-K were the following event winners: Colton Lavoie for the javelin (136-0) and shot put (44-7), Luke Sodergren for the 110 hurdles (15.8) and 300 hurdles (42.5), Matt Jennings in the 800 (2:10), Seth Freeman for the 1,600 (4:49), Seth Regan in the 100 (10.7), Chase Mack in the discus (117-0), Sean Rutledge in the 3,200 (10:34), Tyler Knapp in the pole vault (11-6), and Eamon Sweeney for the high jump (5-6). H-K’s 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relays were also victorious on the day.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

H-K capped off its regular season with a record of 6-0 after posting wins versus Morgan and Westbrook on May 7.

The Cougars claimed a 115-35 victory against Westbrook to go with a 112-38 win over Morgan. The following athletes finished first in the meet for H-K: Autumn Coady in the 100 hurdles (16.5) and 300 hurdles (48.9), Meara Bodak for the 1,600 (5:56) and 3,200 (12:55), Julia Callis in the long jump (15-5.5), Kayla Danaher for the triple jump (29-10), Amanda Minervino in the javelin (93-9), and Morgan Schultz for the pole vault (7-6). The Cougars’ also saw their 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 relays take first place.

Girls’ Tennis

H-K picked up a victory last week and is now 3-12 this year.

The Cougars dropped a 4-3 match versus Morgan on May 6, but came back to get a 6-1 win over Coginchaug 6-1 two days later. On May 9, H-K lost to Valley Regional by a 7-0 score.

Boys’ Tennis

The Cougars lost three matches last week to move to 2-12 this season.

H-K took a 7-0 loss to Morgan on May 6. The Cougars then lost 5-2 contests against Coginchaug and Valley Regional, respectively, on May 8 and 9.

Golf

H-K moved to 4-8 after taking three recent defeats.

The Cougars lost a 158-198 decision against Coginchaug on May 7. Colby Pendleton led the Cougars with a score of 48, Andrew Kuehn and Carter Chase each scored a 49, and Greg Lynskey came back to the clubhouse with a scorecard of 52.

H-K took a 156-179 defeat to Old Saybrook on May 8. The Cougars lost a 180-186 decision versus Cromwell on May 9.
