Westbrook Girls’ Tennis Qualifies for Class S Tourney; Softball Edged by Portland in Slugfest

Girls’ Tennis

The Westbrook girls’ tennis team had three matches on its slate last week and won two of them. With these results, the Knights’ record moved to 10-4 on the year, and they also qualified for the Class S State Tournament.

On April 29, Westbrook headed to Deep River to battle Valley Regional and took a 5-2 loss to the Warriors. In the No. 1 singles match, Sara Farnoli earned a 6-2, 6-1 win, while younger sister Julia Farnoli picked up a hard fought 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) victory at the No. 3 position.

The next day, the Knights hosted Haddam-Killingworth and earned a shutout 7-0 victory. Sara Farnoli netted a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles match. At the No. 2 spot, Sarah Davey came away with a 6-1, 6-0 victory, while Julia Farnoli got the 6-1, 6-2 triumph at the No. 3 position. Gabriella Koplas grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 4 singles match.

As for the doubles matches, the No. 1 duo of Savannah Marshall and Lexi Koplas won a 6-2, 6-2 decision. In the No. 2 match, Alex Young and Olivia Archer earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory, while Gianni Salisbury and Juliana Fabrizi scored a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 3 match.

On May 1, Westbrook hosted Morgan and secured a 6-1 win over the Huskies. Sara Farnoli (6-0, 6-0); Sarah Davey (6-2, 6-1); and Julia Farnoli (6-0, 6-0) all earned victories on the singles courts.

As for doubles, Savannah Marshall and Lexi Koplas (6-4, 6-4); Alex Young and Olivia Archer (6-2, 6-1); and Gianni Salisbury and Juliana Fabrizi (6-2, 6-3) all netted wins.

Baseball

The Knights played a slate of three games against Portland, Coginchaug and Old Saybrook, and couldn’t secure a win in any of their contests. Westbrook’s record drops to 3-11 on the season with the defeats.

On April 29, the Knights hosted Portland and lost an 8-0 home game to the Highlanders. Portland put two runs on the board in the top of the first inning, and then added four more runs in the second. Westbrook was unable to chip away at the deficit the rest of the game. Kyle Robison and Jack Farrell notched base hits in the loss.

The next day, Coginchaug came to Westbrook and the Blue Devils were victorious, 13-1. Coginchaug scored a run in the first and five in the second to go up 6-1, after the Knights got their run in the bottom of the second. The Blue Devils would continue to add on to the 13-1 final.

Sam Freeman provided a hit and an RBI, while Dan Perreault had a hit and a run. Robison had a hit and Ferrell doubled in the defeat.

On May 1, the Knights headed to Old Saybrook where they lost a 7-1 road contest. Old Saybrook scored two runs in the first inning, three runs in the second inning, and two more runs in the fourth, before Westbrook picked up its lone run in the sixth to make the 7-1 final score.

Cam Marshall grabbed two hits and a run, while Quinn Ernst added two hits and an RBI. Connor Cruz notched a pair of hits, as well.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

On May 4, the Knights took part in the Marty Roberts Invitational at Coginchaug. The 4x800-meter relay team of Katherine Dahl, Marguerite Bartlett, Brooke Neri, and Avery Bauman earned third place at the meet with a season best time of 10:56. Elizabeth Gallagher placed sixth in the 200 with a time of 28.26 seconds. The team earned 19th place scoring seven points.

Softball

Westbrook played two games against Portland and Old Saybrook last week, and the Knights lost both contests. With the defeats, Westbrook’s record falls to 1-12 on the year.

On April 29, the Knights hosted Portland and lost a wild 13-11 decision against the Highlanders. Westbrook gained momentum early with two runs in the first inning and three runs in the second inning to make it 5-0. Portland grabbed a run in the top of third inning, then Westbrook added another three runs in the bottom of the frame to bring its lead to 8-1. The Highlanders closed that gap significantly with a six-run fourth inning, but the Knights got a bit of breathing room in with two in the bottom of the frame to make it a 10-7 Westbrook advantage. Portland scored three runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to lead 13-10 heading into the final frame. The Knights could only muster a run and took the 13-11 loss.

Madison Marshall scored three runs on two hits with an RBI, while Jamie Merola had a hit, an RBI, and two runs. Nicole Valiante walked twice and scored two runs, while Juliana Gerena scored two runs. Carolyn Bauman got a hit, walked and scored a run. Alivia Ciarcia notched a hit and a run.

Two days later, the Knights were at Old Saybrook where they took an 18-6 loss to the Rams. Westbrook scored a run in the top of the first, but Old Saybrook put up three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. In the top of the second, the Knights scored three runs to go up 4-3. The Rams scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning, and Westbrook added two in the top of the fourth to knot the game at 7-7. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Old Saybrook’s offense went off for nine runs, and cruised to victory the 18-6 victory.

Marshall provided two hits, two runs, and three RBIs, while Ciarcia grabbed a hit and an RBI. Bauman supplied a hit and a run scored, and

Boys’ Outdoor Track

On May 4, Westbrook was at Coginchaug for the Marty Roberts Invitational. Sophomore Luca Troop took home fourth place in the high jump clearing 5 feet-6 inches. Westbrook scored a total of four points and tied Parish Hill for 18th place at the meet.
