Rams’ Baseball, Girls’ Lacrosse Make States; Track Teams Have Great Day at Marty Roberts Invite

Baseball

The Old Saybrook baseball team swept last week’s slate to come away with three more victories on the year. That puts the Rams record at 9-5, which qualifies Head Coach Nick Hahn’s squad for the Class S State Tournament after a four-game winning streak.

On April 29, Old Saybrook picked up a 10-5 road win at Hale-Ray. The Rams struck early with a four-run outburst in the second inning, and then added another run in the third to take a 5-0 lead. With five runs in the top of the fifth inning, Old Saybrook put the game out of reach, even though Hale-Ray would go on to score five runs over the course of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.

Toby Marineau had a great day picking up the win on the mound with 5.2 innings pitched and six strike outs. At the plate, Marineau went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jordan Butler also went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Cooper Pavlovich went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while Patrick Kelley scored a run on two hits. Gabe Kaar provided two hits, two RBI, a run in his two at bats.

Two days later, Old Saybrook scored a 7-1 win over Westbrook at home to qualify for states. The Rams took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added a three more runs in the second to stretch the lead to 5-0. Old Saybrook would add another two runs in the fourth inning and cruised to victory only allowing a single run in the sixth.

Davis Brown earned the win on the mound with complete game striking out 10 batters. The hurler also went 3-for-4 with three runs scored at the plate. Jack Colella notched three hits and scored two runs. Cooper Pavlovich drove in two runs on a base hit and Jordan Butler drove in three on two hits.

On May 2, Old Saybrook was in Deep River and defeated Valley Regional in a 9-0 shutout road win. Old Saybrook scored two runs in the first inning, another run in the third, then six runs in the fourth for the nine-run advantage.

Dan Cote was dominant on the mound earning the win in six innings pitched including 12 Ks. Kaar came out of the pen in relief for the final frame and struck out the side. Jaden Rolon supplied two hits, two runs, and an RBI in the victory. Butler drove in a pair, as did Colella.

Softball

Old Saybrook played two games last week and came away with a split. With the win and loss, the Rams record moved to 4-8 on the year.

On April 29, Old Saybrook lost a 10-8 road contest against Hale-Ray.

Two days later the Rams hosted Westbrook and earned a decisive 18-6 victory. The game was hotly contested early on with Westbrook taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and Old Saybrook battling back for a 3-1 advantage in the bottom of the frame. Westbrook took a 4-3 lead in the top of the second, and Old Saybrook later responded with four runs in the third to take a 7-4 edge. The Knights brought it within one to make it 7-6 in the fourth, but the Rams blew it open with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth. After Old Saybrook scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the game was called on account of the mercy rule, and Old Saybrook had the 18-6 win.

Pitcher Christina Lombardi earned the win, while Kendall Kollmer went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and five RBI. Captain Maeve Foley went 1-for-2 with an RBI double.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Old Saybrook competed at the Marty Roberts Invitational at Coginchaug and took first place out of 20 teams participating. The Rams scored 87.5 points to outpace second-place RHAM for the win.

Old Saybrook received several first-place finishes, including Grace Hanratty’s triumph in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.45. The 4x800-meter relay team of Allison Cody, Tehra Givehand, Jessica Stratton, and Grace Hanratty took first place with a time of 10:04.39. Grace McLaughlin claimed first place in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet-8 inches, and teammate Priscilla Gumkowski placed second clearing 4 feet-6 inches. Cate Coppes earned second place in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.93 seconds, and she also earned second place in the pole vault clearing nine feet. Stratton earned second place honors in the 1,600 with a time of 5:11.68. Autumn Szucs notched a third-place finish in the 300 hurdles with a time of 51.59.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Rams were at Coginchaug for the Marty Roberts Invitational and came in second place overall. Old Saybrook scored 69 points as a team finishing behind Coginchaug’s first-place tally of 93 points.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Luke Hanratty, Jacob Schneider, Cooper Luciani, and Shane Henderson took first place with a time of 8:23.33, which set a meet record, defeating Coginchaug’s mark of 8:25.53 from 2002. Henderson also scored a first-place finish in the 800-meter run with his time of 1:58.76. Hanratty grabbed first place in the 400 with a time of 52.23 seconds. In the 300 hurdles, Luciani snagged second place with a time of 41.25.

The 4x100 quartet of Carlos Chacon, Devon Moshier, Max Thomas, and Nick Salemi came in second with a time of 44.77 seconds. Landis Twomey threw his way to second place in the javelin with a distance of 139 feet-7 inches. In the pole vault, Cody DeAngelo came in second by clearing 12 feet-6 inches. Jon Barnes came in third in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet-0.5 inches.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Rams earned a pair of wins on a slate of two games last week. With the victories, Old Saybrook improved its record to 9-2 on the season and qualified for the Class S State Tournament.

On April 30, the Rams headed to Old Lyme where they earned a 16-10 road win over the Wildcats. Then on May 3, Old Saybrook hosted Haddam-Killingworth and scored a lopsided 20-8 win over the Cougars.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook had a couple of games on the docket last week and lost the pair. The defeats dropped the Rams’ record to 1-9 on the season.

On April 30, Old Saybrook lost a 15-3 road matchup versus Old Lyme. Two days later, the Rams lost a 17-3 home decision against Haddam-Killingworth.

Golf

The Rams played three home matches at Fenwick Golf Course last week and picked up wins in two of them. Old Saybrook’s record shifted to 5-4 after last week’s results.

On April 30, Old Saybrook went up against Old Lyme and took a 175-187 home loss against the Wildcats.

Old Saybrook’s Ben O’Dell earned medal honors along with Old Lyme’s Corey Drummond, both finishing with 40 strokes on the day. Jack Walsh shot a 43, while Garrett Brady tallied a 47, and Garrett Hilger turned in a 57.

The next day, the Rams earned a 162-196 home win against Haddam-Killingworth. O’Dell earned the medal on the day again with a score of 37. Matt Rothman tallied 39 strokes, while Walsh shot a 41. Garrett Brady totaled 45 strokes and Garrett Hilger shot a 55.

On May 2, Od Saybrook took on Valley Regional and defeated the Warriors in a 172-224 home win. Matt Rothman earned the medal for the Rams this time with a score of 40. Walsh was just a stroke behind Rothman at 41, while Garrett Brady (45) and Ben O’Dell (46) both factored into the final tally. Garret Hilger shot a 51.

Boys’ Tennis

The Rams earned two wins in their two matches on the schedule last week. The results improved Old Saybrook’s record to 7-4 on the season.

On April 29, the Rams notched a shutout 7-0 home victory against Coginchaug. Two days later, Old Saybrook won a 5-2 road match against East Hampton.

Girls’ Tennis

Old Saybrook played three matches last week and earned a win in one of them. The Rams’ record moved to 5-7 on the season with the results.

On April 29, Old Saybrook lost a hard-fought 4-3 road match against Coginchaug. Two days later, the Rams defeated East Hampton/Hale-Ray in a 4-3 home win. On May 2, Old Saybrook lost a 6-1 road match at North Branford.
