East Haven’s Track Teams Post Home Victories; Softball Wins Big Versus Sheehan

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The East Haven boys’ outdoor track team swept a home tri-meet against Career and Platt Tech on April 30. The Easties earned a 133-8 victory over Career and defeated Platt Tech by a 121-21 final to improve to 3-8 this season.

East Haven saw three juniors win multiple events in the sweep. Calvin Nelson won the shot put (41 feet) and the discus (116-9), Ian Loehmann took first in the 300 intermediate hurdles (48.41 seconds) and the high jump (5-4), and Kaio Zannette earned victories in the 100 (11.78) and the 400 (53.22).

East Haven also received first-place finishes from Evan Damian in the 110 high hurdles (16.32), senior Bryce Donovan in the 800 (2:44.34), senior Steve Johnson in the triple jump (39-1.5), sophomore Radames Figueroa in the long jump (18-9.5), junior Nathan Santos in the pole vault (9-6), and senior Dan Hernandez in the javelin (94-0).

The Yellowjackets placed first in all three relays as their 4x100 team of Johnson, Zanette, Damian, and Figueroa ran a time of 45.38; the 4x400 sophomore Kevin Francois, senior Zachard Valles, sophomore Dhruv Patel, and Zanette clocked in at 4.11.70; and the 4x800 of Valles, freshman Kevin Phan, Francois, and Donovan claimed first with a 10:52.00.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Easties hosted Platt Tech on April 30 and notched a 103-35 victory over the Panthers.

Sophomore Kisha Francois, freshman Juliana Espinoza, and fellow freshman and Morgan D’Auria each won three events for East Haven. Francois claimed first place in the 100 (12.7 seconds), the 200 (27.2) and the long jump (15 feet-1.5 inches) at the meet. Espinoza dominated the distance events by winning the 800 (2:56.6), the 1,600 (6:29.0), and the 3,200 (14:51.2). D’Auria posted victorious performances in the 400 (67.8), the triple jump (32-3), and the pole vault (6-0).

Junior Bella Ragaini won a pair of events by placing first in the javelin (84-4) and the discus (75.7). Freshman Emily Mazzucco won the high jump with a height of 4-8. East Haven’s 4x400 relay team Francois, senior Paige Maffeo, Mazzucco, and freshman Emma Szewc finish first at 4:54.6.

Softball

The Yellowjackets came away with one win while playing a trio SCC Housatonic Division road games last week. East Haven is now 6-6 overall with a record of 4-2 in divisional play. East Haven started the week with a 14-3 thumping of Sheehan, but then lost close contests against Sacred Heart Academy (2-1) and North Haven (2-0).

On April 30, East Haven collected 17 hits on its way to beating Sheehan by a 14-3 score. Freshman Emilee Bishop threw a complete game and struck out five to earn the victory. Freshman Magdalena Barthel had three hits and two RBI, while sophomores Sammie Franceschi and Carly Cordova, freshman Jilien Ayala, and senior Jenna Esposito all had two hits. Franceschi and senior Selena DeFelice both scored three runs, and Cordova knocked in two runs for the Yellowjackets. Senior Jaime Gallo hit a home run and scored a pair of runs.

The next afternoon, East Haven dropped a 2-1 decision to Sacred Heart Academy. Sophomore Tori Heaphy allowed just two runs on four hits over six innings. Gallo had two hits for the Yellowjackets, who scored their only run of the game when Barthel hit a RBI triple in the sixth inning.

Then on May 1, East Haven took a 2-0 defeat in North Haven. Bishop only allowed six hits against the undefeated Indians, who scored both of their runs in the fourth inning. Heaphy, Barthel, Ayala, junior Becky Flynn, and senior Megan Roberts had one hit apiece for the Easties.

Boys’ Tennis

East Haven netted its second victory of the season by defeating Career last week. The Yellowjackets also took three defeats to move to 2-12 on the year.

The Yellowjackets earned a 5-2 win versus Career on April 29. Freshman Matt Gaudioso prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles; senior captain Dan Murtagh won a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 2 singles; and junior Marchello DeLucia claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles. In doubles action, East Haven’s No. 1 team of senior captain Joe Brown and sophomore Matt DiVito notched a victory. East Haven also picked up a win via default at No. 3 doubles.

Later in the week, East Haven took a 7-0 loss to Lyman Hall on April 30, dropped a 5-2 decision against Guilford on May 1, and lost to Fairfield Prep by a 7-0 score Fairfield Prep at May 2.

Girls’ Tennis

The Yellowjackets are 2-9 on the year after losing three recent matches.

East Haven lost a 5-2 decision versus Lyman Hall on April 29. Senior captain Jenna Pane claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, while fellow senior Mikayla Raffone rallied for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles.

The next day, East Haven took a 6-1 loss at Branford. On May 1, the Easties were edged out by Mercy by a 4-3 score. Pane posted a 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles; Raffone earned a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 2; and freshman Linette Gonzalez won a 7-6, 6-3 (10-6) decision at the No. 3 spot for the Yellowjackets.

Golf

East Haven took losses last week and has a record of 5-6-1 this spring.

On May 1, East Haven traveled to Brownson Country Club to face Shelton and lost by the score of 153-203. Senior Jon Moscato finished with a 44 for the round. Junior Logan Hamilton shot a 50, junior Alexis Pendziwater scored a 52, sophomore Andrew Zito shot a 57, and freshman Norah Rome finished with a 62.

The next day, East Haven took on Lyman Hall and Wilbur Cross at Alling Memorial Golf Club. The Yellowjackets scored a 224 as a team and lost contests against Lyman Hall (194) and Cross (197). Zito turned in a 53, Pendziwater shot a 56, freshman Nick Sorrentino finished with a 57, and Hamilton scored a 58.
