North Haven Stays Undefeated with 8th-Straight Shutout

Softball

The North Haven softball team played three recent games in SCC Housatonic Division action and recorded victories in all three to improve to 13-0 overall with a 6-0 record in divisional play. The Indians, who are the No. 4-ranked team in the state, have won their last eight games via shutout, having last allowed a run on April 10. Last week, North Haven defeated Sacred Heart Academy (3-0), Branford (22-0), and East Haven (2-0) to continue its shutout streak. Senior Peyton Davis got her 100th career hit in the win over East Haven.

North Haven started off its week by earning a 3-0 road victory against Sacred Heart Academy at the Connecticut Sportsplex in North Branford on April 29. Senior Lauren Card pitched a one-hitter to earn the win on the mound for the Indians. North Haven broke open a scoreless game by plating three runs in the top of the sixth inning.

On May 1, the Indians earned a 22-0 home victory versus Branford at the North Haven Athletic Complex.

The following night, North Haven hosted East Haven and blanked the Yellowjackets by a 2-0 score in a crucial Housatonic Division game. Card tossed a five-hitter to pick up her 12th win of the year. North Haven scored the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Haylee Garthwait doubled in a run and Caitlin Ranciato had the other RBI in the inning. Junior Eryn Sheeley also had a double to help the Indians defeat East Haven, which came into the game with an undefeated record in the division. Davis collected career hit No. 100 in the victory.

Baseball

The Indians picked up one win while playing a trio of SCC Quinnipiac Division games last week. North Haven earned a 12-7 victory over Xavier, took a 5-0 loss to Cheshire, and dropped a 7-5 decision versus Lyman Hall. The Indians have an overall record of 7-6 and are 3-2 in the Quinnipiac. Head Coach Bob DeMayo’s team needs one more victory to qualify for the Class L State Tournament.

North Haven kicked off its week by claiming a 12-7 road win against Xavier on April 29. The Indians took a 5-0 lead in the first inning, before Xavier cut the deficit to 5-3 in the second. North Haven continued tacking on runs throughout the game, using a four-run sixth inning to take a 12-3 advantage. Senior Reid Kankel pitched five innings to earn his third win on the bump for North Haven. Kankel also went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored, and five RBI to lead a 17-hit onslaught.

Senior Danny Cannavaciolo went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI; senior Gianni DiMartino was 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs, and an RBI; and junior Matt DeRosa went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs scored, and an RBI in the victory. Junior Dave Christoforo went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, senior Matt Solomon was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run, and senior Hunter Garthwait also went 2-for-4.

The following day, North Haven lost a 5-0 home game against Cheshire. The Rams scored one run in the first inning, two runs in the third, one in the fifth, and another run in the sixth on their way to the win. Solomon went 3-for-4 for the Indians, who saw senior Nick Rossi toss a scoreless inning of relief.

On May 4, the Indians hosted Lyman Hall and took a 7-5 defeat at Bailey Road Field. Lyman Hall scored three runs in the top of the first inning, after which North Haven came back with two runs in the bottom half. The Trojans added four more runs in the third inning and went on to get the victory. Cannavaciolo went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and two RBI; Solomon was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run, and Christoforo went 2-for-4. Senior John Gontarek pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.

Girls’ Tennis

North Haven won both of its matches last week to improve to 10-2 and solidify a berth in the Class M State Tournament.

North Haven clinched its spot in states by netting a 6-1 road win over Sacred Heart Academy at Hamden Middle School on April 30. Senior Julia Migliorini claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles, freshman Ally Vollero prevailed by a 7-5, 6-3 final at No. 2, senior Lily Mezzi earned a 7-5, 6-2 win in the No. 3 singles match, and junior Anna Wooton notched a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles. In doubles, North Haven’s No. 2 team of senior Daniella Bryson and junior Jess Tran gutted out a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory, while the No. 3 team of senior Yasmin Mohamed and junior Claire Looney won a 6-1, 6-1 decision.

Then on May 2, the Indians posted a 7-0 shutout versus non-conference opponent Wilcox Tech at North Haven Middle School. Migliorini, Vollero, and Mezzi each earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory for the Indians, who also received a 6-2, 6-1 win from Wotton. Senior Zoe Bowerman and junior Kara Stevens earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, Bryson and Tran prevailed 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2, and Mohamed and Looney captured a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3.

Boys’ Tennis

The Indians stand at 8-4 after gaining a split of four recent matchups. With one more win, North Haven will clinch a spot in the Class L State Championship.

North Haven lost a 6-1 contest in Branford on April 29. The Indians’ No. 3 doubles team of Jake Barra and junior Laekhram Singh earned a 9-7 victory in the match.

The following afternoon, the Indians took a 7-0 loss against Guilford at North Haven Athletic Complex. The day after that, North Haven notched a 5-2 victory at Law.

The Indians wrapped up their week by claiming a 4-3 road win over Shelton. Senior Nick Cristante netted a 9-8 (10-2) victory at No. 1 singles, while fellow senior Matteo Franco won via default at No. 4 singles. North Haven’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Quinn Dallai and sophomore Tanner Powell triumphed by an 8-2 score. The Indians’ No. 3 duo of sophomores Justin Falasco and Josh Park won by way of default.

Golf

The Indians hosted two meets and then had a tri-match on the road last week. North Haven came away from stretch with three wins and one loss to improve to 8-1 on the year.

On April 29, North Haven took a 169-204 home loss versus Shelton at the Tradition Golf Club. The next day, the Indians hosted Foran and claimed a 168-180 victory.

Then on May 1, North Haven competed against Career and Cross at Alling Memorial Golf Club. The Indians swept the match by scoring a 162 to defeat both Career (250) and Cross (252). Senior Alex Kirtland collected medalist honors as the low scorer of the meet by turning in a round of 36. Junior Julia Raposo also had a great day on the links by scoring a 38 for North Haven.

Girls’ Lacrosse

North Haven earned a split of two contests against fellow SCC Tier 1 opponents last week. The Indians are now 4-6 on the year.

On April 30, the Indians took a 12-10 home loss against Hand at North Haven Middle School. It was a close-fought game in which the Indians were only down 9-8 at halftime. The Tigers outscored North Haven by a 3-2 margin in the second half to get the two-goal victory. Senior Annie Uyeki scored five goals and had one assist for North Haven, while junior Madison Fredericks had two goals with an assist. Senior Molly Scarpa scored two goals, and junior Callie Kessler added a goal. Senior Casey Kross made nine saves in net.

Then on May 2, the Indians played a road game at Mercy and edged out the Tigers by a 13-12 final. North Haven was up 7-5 at the break and then held off Mercy’s comeback bid in the second half. Uyeki had another big game with three goals and four assists. Kessler netted four goals and also had an assist in the win. Scarpa had a goal and two assists, Fredericks scored a pair of goals; senior Quinn Kirby, sophomore Christina DeAngelo, and freshman Shealin Saracino scored one goal apiece; and senior Jillian Rowland contributed an assist. Kross earned the victory in goal by stopping seven shots.
