Hand Baseball Keeps Churning Out Runs; Three Teams Qualify for States

Baseball

The Hand baseball team poured on the offense by scoring 37 runs during a four-win week last week. The Tigers improved to 12-3 overall with a record of 7-0 in the SCC Oronoque Division.

The Tigers defeated West Haven 12-7 in a divisional game on April 29. Colin Telford had two hits and three RBI, Anthony DePino hit two doubles and had an RBI, and Kevin Girardi had a hit with three RBI for Hand. Jake Crawford picked up his second win of the season on the mound.

On May 1, Hand posted an 11-2 win over Career in another Oronoque matchup. DePino had three hits, including two doubles, with two RBI for the Tigers. Crawford had a triple and three RBI, while Julian Banerji added a pair of hits. Winning pitcher Jared Kuryan earned his second victory of the year.

The Tigers edged out Wilton by a 2-1 score for a non-conference victory on May 2. Hand capped off the week with a 12-0 rout against Shelton in a divisional game on May 3.

Softball

The Tigers played five recent games in SCC Quinnipiac Division action and came away with four wins to secure a berth in the Class L State Tournament. Hand owns an overall record of 8-6 and is 5-2 in the Quinnipiac Division.

Hand claimed a 3-2 victory versus Shelton on April 29. Then on May 1, Tigers swept a doubleheader against Hillhouse by winning 11-5 and 17-3 decisions. Hand clinched its playoff spot with a 6-2 win over Law on May 3. The following day, the Tigers lost an 8-6 contest to West Haven.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Hand stands at 8-4 after winning two of its three games last week. The Tigers also clinched their spot in the Class M State Tournament during last week’s action.

The Tigers qualified for the state tourney by netting a 10-5 win against Cheshire on April 29. Tom Swank netted five goals for Hand, which also saw Jack Flanagan (3 goals, 1 assist), Liam McParland (1 goal), Tom Ferrick (1 assist), Tripp Bordiere (1 assist), Liam Regan (1 assist), Conner Bergere (1 assist), and Luke Conway (1 assist) contribute to the offense. Griffin Fitzmaurice made 14 stops in net as Hand outshot the Rams 38-27.

Hand dropped an 8-7 decision against Simsbury on May 1. Three days later, the Tigers posted a 9-4 win against East Lyme.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Tigers qualified for the Class M State Tournament after splitting two recent contests. Hand has a record of 7-5 on the year.

Hand made states by earning a 12-10 win over North Haven April 30. Then on May 2, the Tigers took a 10-7 defeat to Guilford.

Girls’ Tennis

The Tigers improved to 13-0 after posting three more victories and have now won 50-straight regular-season matches.

Hand defeated Lauralton Hall by the final score of 6-1 on April 29. The Tigers edged out Amity by a 4-3 score the next day. On May 2, Hand recorded a 7-0 shutout over Cheshire.

The Amity match was tied 3-3 when Lindsay Riordan gutted out a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 victory to secure the win for Hand. The Tigers also received a win from Annie Barrett on the singles court, as well as victories from the doubles tandems of Anna Lang and Claire Langille, plus Catherine Aranow and Breanna Colonese-DiBello.

Boys’ Tennis

Hand won its only match of the week to stay unbeaten at 11-0. The Tigers blanked Notre Dame-West Haven by the final score of 7-0 on May 1.

Boys’ Golf

The Tigers posted three wins last week and are now 8-2 this spring.

Hand defeated Sheehan by the score of 146-191 on April 29. Conner Quinn and Jake Bennett both shot a 35 for co-medalist recognition as the low scorers on the afternoon. Aidan Stuart chipped in with a 37, while Michael McKeon shot a 39 in the victory.

On May 2, Hand swept a tri-match by scoring a 149 to defeat both Notre Dame-West Haven (158) and Cheshire (174). Matthew Doyle collected medalist honors with a low round of 34. Bennett shot a 36, Stuart totaled a 38, and McKeon finished with a round of 41.

Girls’ Golf

The Tigers improved to 4-2 after notching a pair of recent victories.

Hand claimed a 217-228 win over Norwich Free Academy on April 29. Angie Balzano shot a 52 and was the medalist of the match. On May 2, the Tigers defeated Mercy by a 230-235 final.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Tigers took a loss to Foran in last week’s action. Hand lost to the Lions by the final margin of 82-67 on April 30.

Boys’ Volleyball

Hand took three defeats last week and is now 6-5 this spring.
