Guilford Baseball, Boys’ Tennis Make States; Girls’ Lacrosse Notches Huge Win Versus Hand

Baseball

The Guilford baseball team clinched a berth in the Class L State Tournament by winning three of the four games on last week’s schedule. The Indians now have an overall record of 8-6 overall and are 4-2 in the SCC Housatonic Division.

Guilford notched its fifth straight win with a 4-2 triumph over Foran on April 29. Jack Strand pitched a complete game and struck out seven batters to go along with two hits at the dish. Cade Pascale had a pinch-hit single with the bases loaded that drove in two runs to give Guilford the lead. Jake Ciocca added two hits, while Ethan Vashel executed a perfect squeeze bunt for the victorious Indians.

The next day, Guilford took a 6-0 loss to Amity. The Indians bounced back with a 6-4 victory over divisional opponent Sheehan on May 1.

On May 3, Guilford sealed its spot in states by posting a 2-0 shutout versus Branford in a Housatonic contest. Mike McCullaugh tossed a complete-game three-hitter to lead the Indians to the victory. Josh Wettemann had two hits and two RBI, including a solo home run, for Head Coach Brian Hayden’s club.

“Mike was able to mix his pitches and keep Branford off-balance all game and, when he fell behind, he didn’t panic and battled back,” said Hayden. “Josh had a phenomenal game. He threw out two runners and picked another runner off second. He played the game about as good as anyone can today. This was a huge week for us, going 3-1 and earning a berth into the State Tournament.”

Softball

The Indians improved to 5-7 overall and 4-2 in the SCC Oronoque Division following a 2-1 week that featured some offensive outbursts.

The Indians routed Oronoque opponent Hamden by a 13-1 score on April 29. Allie Petonitio went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Leah Kornguth went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and five RBI for Guilford. Jill Batick and Emily Torre each had a pair of hits, including one double apiece. Ava Gladwin added a pair of hits to the offense. Ema Signore pitched five strong innings, allowing just one run and three hits in the circle.

Guilford kept the runs coming with a 17-1 victory against Cross in a divisional matchup on May 1. Mary Evans led the Indians’ offense by going 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Torre chipped in with a pair of hits.

The Indians lost an 11-3 decision to Lauralton Hall in another divisional game on May 2. Batick went 2-for-3 with a run scored, plus Torre and Jordyn Goldstein both went 2-for-4 with a double.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Guilford moved to 10-1 after notching two triumphs last week, including a huge victory against its crosstown rival.

Guilford earned a 10-7 victory over SCC rival Hand on May 2, marking the Indians’ first win versus the Tigers in six years. Nicolette Spotlow and Maddie Epke both had three goals for Guilford. Catherine Larrow scored two goals, while Maddie Costantino and Nicole Tepley each had one goal. Sydney Widlitz made nine saves to get the win in net.

On May 4, Guilford faced off with non-conference opponent McMahon and prevailed by a 19-10 margin.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Guilford took its first two defeats of the season and also claimed a win over Sheehan last week. The Indians have a record of 9-2.

Guilford dropped a 14-8 decision to Fairfield Prep on April 29. The Indians came back to get a 16-5 victory against Shelton on May 1. Three days later, Guilford lost to Weston by a 9-6 final in non-conference action.

Boys’ Tennis

The Indians collected two more victories this past week and are now 10-2 overall. Guilford has also qualified for the Class L State Championship as a team.

The Indians lost a 4-3 decision against Fairfield Prep on April 29. Guilford then defeated North Haven by a 7-0 score the next day. On May 1, the Indians earned a 5-2 win over East Haven to qualify for the state meet.

Girls’ Tennis

Guilford stands at 5-6 following a four-match week on the courts.

Guilford lost a 7-0 contest to Amity on April 29. The following day, the Indians dropped a 4-3 match against Cheshire. Guilford rebounded by netting a 5-2 win against Branford on May 2. Two days later, the Indians prevailed 4-3 versus Sheehan.

In the match versus Cheshire, Guilford received wins from Emily Dietzko (6-4, 2-6, 6-2), Kiera Stankewich (7-6, 6-3), and Morgan Mancuso (6-1, 6-3) on the singles court.

Facing Branford, Dietzko (6-0, 6-0), Stankewich (6-0, 6-1), and Emma Mullett (6-2, 7-5) won their singles matches. The Indians’ doubles teams of Mancuso and Veronica Zimmer (6-1, 6-4), plus Summer Heckler and Chloe Shoff (6-0, 6-0), were also victorious.

Golf

Guilford improved to 6-3 after scoring two more wins last week.

The Indians defeated Lyman Hall by the final tally of 175-198 on April 29. Guilford then claimed a 165-168 victory versus Law on May 1.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Indians split a tri-meet on April 30 and are now 4-5 on the dual-meet season.

Guilford defeated Xavier by a 64-57 final, while taking a 104-34 to Law in last week’s meet. Connor Rose won the discus (120-4), Shane Grattan took first in the javelin (130-7), Elijah Dillon won the 3,200 (10:44.80), and Ben Crair claimed the top spot in 1,600 (4:52.70) for the Indians. Guilford’s 4x400 relay of Joe Walters, Cameron Hubbard, Cade Yerkes, and Thomas Gregory finished first with a time of 3:43.6.

The Indians also saw second-place finishes from Gregory in the 800 (2:11.90), Grattan in the discus (96-8), and Bailey Meyers in the pole vault (10-6), along with the 4x800 relay of Walters, Hubbard, Griffin Hughes, and Justin Shiffrin (8:42.30) at the meet.

Guilford sent several athletes to compete at the Middletown Invitational that took place on May 3 and 4. Shane Grattan finished second in the freshman/sophomore javelin event (139-1), the 4x400 freshman and sophomore relay team of Shiffrin, Nicholas Celotto, Nathan Montgomery, and Gregory came in third place (3:54.71). Gregory also finished seventh in the 800 (2:06.99). On the varsity side, Dinauer qualified in the states for the 800 with a time of 2:05.57. Mark Salib reached a personal-best height of 11 feet in the pole vault. In the 3,200, Elijah Dillon (10:14.19) and Shiffrin (10:25.51) both finished with career-best times.
