Both H-K Track Teams Move to 4-0; Softball Rallies to Beat Coginchaug

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ outdoor track team continued its strong start to the spring by notching a couple of victories in a tri-meet last week.

On April 30, the Cougars defeated Coginchaug 99-51 and also earned a 120-25 win versus Cromwell to improve to 4-0 on the season. Leading the way for H-K were the following first-place finishers: Luke Sodergren in the 110 hurdles (15.8) and 300 hurdles (42.5), Matt Jennings for the 800 (2:14) and 3,200 (10:10), Seth Regan in the 100 (11.2), Tyler Knapp for the long jump (19-1), Christian Uzwiak in the 1,600 (4:49), and Colton Lavoie in the shot put (42-9). H-K’s 4x400 and 4x800 relays were also victorious on the day.

Previously, the Cougars competed at the O’Grady Relays in Bethel on April 27. H-K’s shot put relay of Trey Callender (43-11), Lavoie (43-9), and Wally Sample (38-3) finished in second place in the event. The discus relay of Lavoie (113-4), Chase Mack (108-1), and Dylan Champagne (107-10) also finished as the runner-up. H-K’s sprint medley relay team of Knapp, Regan, Dmytri Mallon, and Jennings came in second place while setting the school record in the event with a time of 3:45.86.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Cougars improved to 4-0 after picking up wins over Coginchaug and Cromwell in a recent tri-meet.

H-K recorded victories against Coginchaug (123-27) and Cromwell (117-32) in last week’s meet. Autumn Coady claimed first place in the 100 hurdles (16.4) and the 300 hurdles (49.7), while Emma Anziano won the 800 (2:31) and the 1,600 (5:39) to help H-K sweep the meet. The Cougars also received victories from Elena Boyington in the 200 (28.5), Meara Bodak for the 3,200 (12:54), Julia Callis in the long jump (14-4), Jess Timothy for the high jump (4-6), Gabby Lester for the shot put (25-3), Gabby Wyzykowski in the discus (74-8), Amanda Minervino for the javelin (93-0), and Morgan Schultz in the pole vault (6-6). H-K’s 4x400 and 4x800 relays also finished in first place.

Softball

H-K evened its record at 6-6 following a week that featured an exciting comeback victory.

The Cougars rallied for an 8-5 win versus Coginchaug on April 29. H-K fell into a 5-0 deficit in the first inning, but came back to defeat the Blue Devils. Ella McGlynn clubbed a two-run homer in the fourth inning that spurred the big comeback for the Cougars.

On May 1, H-K lost to North Branford by the final score of 13-5.

Golf

The Cougars stand at 4-5 following a busy week on the links.

H-K lost a 178-18 decision to Hale-Ray on April 29. Andrew Kuehn finished with a round of 42 for the Cougars, who also saw Greg Lynskey (45), Colby Pendleton (47), and Jackson Houde (51) compete in the match.

The Cougars then swept a tri-match by scoring a 186 to defeat both East Hampton (194) and North Branford (215) on April 30. Kuehn earn medalist honors as the low scorer with a 41 for H-K. Lynskey shot a 47, Pendleton scored a 48, and Houde finished with a score of 50.

The Cougars took a 162-196 defeat against Old Saybrook on May 1 and then lost to East Hampton 169-194 on May 2. In the match versus East Hampton, Kuehn was the medalist with his round of 38. Pendleton shot a 42, Lynskey scored a 43, and Houde turned in a scorecard of 46.

Boys’ Lacrosse

H-K improved to 4-4 by winning its lone contest of the week. The Cougars defeated Old Saybrook by the final tally of 17-3 on May 2.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Cougars took a few defeats in last week’s action.

H-K lost to Mercy by a 19-5 final on April 29. The next day, the Cougars dropped an 18-7 decision versus Morgan. Then on May 1, H-K took a 20-10 loss versus Waterford on May 1. In its final game of the week, the Cougars (0-11) lost a 20-8 contest against Old Saybrook on May 3.

Boys’ Tennis

The Cougars have a record of 2-9 following a recent defeat. H-K faced Westbrook on April 30 and lost a 7-0 decision to the Knights.

Girls’ Tennis

H-K moved to 2-10 after losing a pair of matches last week.

The Cougars took a 7-0 defeat to Westbrook on April 30. H-K lost to North Branford by that same score the following day.
