Yellowjackets' Softball Moves to 5-4 with Two Victories; Francois Wins Three Events in Tri-Meet

Softball

The East Haven softball team triumphed in a pair of games last week to improve to 5-4 overall with a record of 3-0 in SCC Housatonic Division play. The Yellowjackets earned wins versus Branford and Norwich Free Academy in last week’s action.

On April 23, East Haven hosted Branford for a divisional duel and prevailed 7-2 to remain unbeaten in Housatonic action. Freshman pitcher Emilee Bishop was flawless on the hill by tossing a one-hitter for her second win of the season. Bishop only walked two batters and struck out five on the day. Sophomore Tori Heaphy had two hits, including a double, to go with two RBI. Freshman Lena Barthel hit a home run and drove in two runs.

The next afternoon, the Yellowjackets hosted Norwich Free Academy for a non-conference game and won by a 5-1 score. Heaphy was spectacular on the mound by fanning eight and walking just one in a four-hit performance for her third victory on the year. Junior Becky Flynn and Bishop both hit a homer, while senior Jaime Gallo and sophomore Brooke Clancy each had two hits. Bishop drove in a pair of runs, and Gallo plated one.

Baseball

The Yellowjackets took three defeats on the road last week and are now 5-5 this season.

On April 24, East Haven took a 6-5 loss at North Haven when the Indians scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Senior Gianni Mumford hit a three-run homer in the loss.

The following day, East Haven dropped a 10-4 decision against Notre Dame-West Haven in an SCC Hammonasset matchup, putting the Yellowjackets’ divisional record at 2-1. Nate Furino collected four hits, including a pair of doubles.

To close out the week, East Haven traveled to Norwalk and lost an 11-5 contest in non-conference action on April 27.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Yellowjackets visited Branford to square off against the host Hornets and Sacred Heart Academy on April 23. East Haven defeated Branford (78-66) and lost to Sacred Heart Academy (112-37) for a record of 3-6 this year.

Sophomore Kisha Francois finished first in three events at the meet. Francois won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.2 seconds, placed first in the 200 at 26.4 seconds, and also won the long jump by hitting 16 feet-9.5 inches. Freshman Emily Mazzucco earned first place in the 300-meter hurdles by running a time of 53.6 seconds.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

East Haven took two defeats in a tri-meet on April 23 and how has a record of 2-7. The Yellowjackets took a 122-28 loss against Notre Dame-West Haven and also lost to Branford by the final score of 105-45.

Junior Calvin Nelson finished first in the discus with a toss of 115 feet-3 inches for East Haven at the meet.

Golf

East Haven hit the links for four matches last week and came away with one win, one tie, and two losses. The Yellowjackets have a record of 4-4-1 on the season.

On April 23, East Haven competed against Hillhouse and Cross at Alling Memorial Golf Club in New Haven. East Haven and Hillhouse finished in a tie with their respective scores of 200. The Yellowjackets also earned a win versus Cross, which scored a 267 as a squad. Senior Jon Moscato earned medalist honors as the low scorer on the round with a 43. Junior Alexis Pendziwater shot a 47, sophomore Andrew Zito shot a 51, and freshman Norah Rome finished with a 59.

The next day, East Haven hosted Law and won by the final of 176-241 at Alling Memorial. Zito finished with a 56, Moscato and Rome both posted scores of 59, and junior Shane Hanson shot a 67.

Then on April 25, the Yellowjackets dropped a 194-218 decision against Foran at Grassy Hill Country Club in Orange. Moscato finished as the medalist with a 51, Zito and Pendziwater each shot a 54, as junior Logan Hamilton finished with his round with a 59.

Girls’ Tennis

East Haven lost a pair of matchups on the road last week to move to 2-6 this spring.

On April 23, the Yellowjackets took a 7-0 loss versus Law. Two days later, East Haven lost to Foran by a 6-1 score. The Yellowjackets’ win came at No. 3 doubles, where sophomores Doreen Alberino and Emily Sortito netted a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory.
