Westbrook lost a pair of games against Shoreline Conference opponents Morgan and Haddam- Killingworth last week. The losses dropped the Knights’ record to 3-8 just over the halfway mark of the regular season.
On April 23, Westbrook headed to Clinton and lost a 4-3 contest against Morgan. After the Knights took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, the Huskies responded with two runs in the bottom of the third. Westbrook tied the game with a run in the top of the fifth, and then took a 3-2 lead with another run in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Morgan walked off with a bases loaded line drive for the 4-3 final score.
Zachary True had a great day at the plate going 3-for-3, and David McCain went 2-for-3. Connor Cruz provided a hit, a run, and an RBI, while Quinn Ernst had a hit and an RBI. Jack Farrell scored two runs.
The next day, Westbrook lost a 14-0 game against Haddam-Killingworth. After the Cougars lead 3-0 through two innings, they put a crooked number on the board in the top of the third to take a nine-run lead en route the 14-0 final after five innings.
Softball
The Knights lost games against Morgan, Haddam-Killingworth, and Coginchaug last week and their record fell to 1-10 on the season.
On April 23, Westbrook lost a 15-3 road game against Morgan. The Huskies got out a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Westbrook fought back with three runs in the top of the second inning. Morgan extended the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the third and added on from there. The game was called after the Huskies scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Carolyn Bauman suppliled a hit, a run, and two RBI, while Madison Marshall had a hit and a run in the road loss. Kiley McCarthy provided a hit and an RBI, while Alivia Ciarcia, Juliana Gerana, and Gabby Cordon had a hit apiece.
The next day, Westbrook lost a 21-1 home contest against Haddam-Killingworth. The Cougars put 13 runs on the board in the second inning to stake an insurmountable 16-0 lead en route to the five inning win.
Jamie Merola had two hits and a run scored for the Knights, while Ciarcia had two hits and an RBI. Madison Marshall worked a walk, and Olivia Hartzell grabbed a hit in the loss.
On April 25, lost another home game to Coginchaug by the score of 14-0.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Westbrook girls’ outdoor track team had a couple of meets last week and saw some solid results from a handful of its athletes.
On April 23, the Knights headed to Old Saybrook to compete against the Rams with Old Lyme in a tri-meet. Kelly Donlan placed first in both the shot put and the discus with throws of 32 feet-9 inches and 77 feet-2 inches, respectively. Elizabeth Gallagher won the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.84 seconds and 200-meter dash at 28.54 seconds.
Senior captain Avery Bauman placed second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:58, and she earned third place in the 800 with a time of 2:46. Megan Greaves finished third in triple jump with a leap of 28 feet-5.5 inches.
On April 27, Westbrook was at the Stafford Invitational and came in eighth place as a team with 27 points. Gallagher ran a time of 13.88 seconds in the 100, finishing in sixth place. Donlan took third in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet-7 inches. Greaves earned sixth place in the high jump with clearing 4 feet-6 inches. Bauman placed eighth in the 3,200 with a time of 12:56. The girls 4x800 team of Brooke Neri, Micayla Malchiodi, Cierra Brundage, and Bauman took eight place with a time of 11:13.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
On April 23, at the tri-meet at Old Saybrook with Old Lyme, Michael Gingras earned second place in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet. Sophomore Luca Troop took second in long jump with a leap of 18 feet-1.25 inches, as well as third in the high jump, clearing 5 feet-4 inches.
On April 27, Troop scored seventh in the high jump with a height of 5 feet-four inches. Westbrook placed 17th as a team with 3 points.
Boys’ Tennis
The Westbrook boys’ tennis team only managed to get one match in last week due to some wild weather, and the Knights lost a home contest against Cromwell to move to 7-3 on the season.
On April 23, Westbrook hosted Platt Tech a lost a 6-1 home decision. The Knights’ lone win came from the No. 1 singles match where Nate Comment grabbed a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
