Rams’ Baseball and Softball Squads Secure Splits; Track Teams Place 2nd at Stafford Invitational

Baseball

The Old Saybrook baseball team gained a split of two games last week. With these results, the Rams’ record on the season moved to 6-5.

On April 24, Old Saybrook headed to North Branford and dropped a close back-and-forth contest by a score of 4-3 to the Thunderbirds. The Rams got on the board first to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, and then added another run to make it 2-0 in the third. North Branford got a run back in the bottom of the third to trim Old Saybrook’s lead in half. In the bottom of the sixth, the Thunderbirds took a 3-2 lead, and the Rams tied the game up in the top of the seventh. North Branford drove home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk-off base hit with the bases loaded.

Davis Brown went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Jack Colella went 2-for-4. Jaden Rolon had a hit and a run scored, and Luke Duffy had a base hit and scored a run.

The next day, the Rams picked up a decisive 8-1 home win against Morgan. Old Saybrook started with an early deficit when the Huskies staked a 1-0 in the first. The Rams took a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the second inning, and added three more runs in the fourth. Old Saybrook capped off its scoring with three more runs in the sixth.

Brown went 2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs scored, and a walk, while Jordan Butler had a base hit and drove in a pair of runs. Dan Cote had a hit and scored a run. Colella and Cooper Pavlovich notched a hit apiece.

Softball

The Rams played two games last week and secured a win in one of them. With the win and the loss, Old Saybrook’s record on the year moved to 3-7.

On April 24, Old Saybrook lost a 12-0 road decision against four-time Shoreline Conference champs, North Branford.

The next day, the Rams were back at home where they picked up a 14-2 victory against Morgan. The game shaped up to be a back-and-forth battle, with Morgan taking a 1-0 lead in the first and Old Saybrook striking back to tie it in the bottom of the frame. In the top of the third, Morgan regained a one-run advantage, but Old Saybrook’s offense started to click in the bottom of the third, plating four runs. The Rams added four more runs in the fourth, and then five runs in the fifth to get the 14-2 win.

Old Saybrook really got going at the plate with 16 hits, and Christina Lombardi came away with the victory on the mound. Lombardi threw a solid game only giving up four hits, two walks, and she had two strike outs.

Senior captain Maeve Foley led the team with a single, a double and a three-run home run. Taylor Cote contributed with two singles and a two-RBI double. Catcher Rachel Baldi went 3-for-3 with a double and two singles.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Old Saybrook took part in the Stafford Rotary Invitational on April 27. The Rams came in second place at the meet in the Class S standings with a total of 96.5 points and were bolstered by several top finishes.

Shane Henderson triumphed in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:26.51. Jon Barnes also earned first-place honors in the high jump with his leap of 5 feet-8 inches. The 4x100-meter relay quartet of Danny Almada, Carlos Chacon, Devon Mosher, and Max Thomas took first place with a time of 45.84 seconds, while the 4x400 squad of Luke Hanratty, Cooper Luciani, Thomas, and Henderson earned second place with a time of 3:32.21.

In the 800, Hanratty took second place with a time of 1:59.43, just behind Tolland’s Stephen Sutton’s mark of 1:59.15. Cody DeAngelo cleared a height of 12 feet for second place in the pole vault. Carlos Chacon earned third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.72 seconds.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Rams earned second place in the Class S rankings at the Stafford Rotary Invitational on April 27. The team scored 107 points to finish behind Bloomfield, who scored 138.5 points.

Grace Hanratty claimed first place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:20.89, nearly a full 10 seconds ahead of East Hampton’s Danielle Adams’s time of 5:30.51. Rachel Vigorita placed first in the high jump, clearing five feet for the victory. Cate Coppes grabbed first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.47 seconds, and she took home second place in the pole vault by clearing a height of 9 feet. Jessica Stratton finished in first place in the 800 with a time of 2:23.91, to outpace Tolland’s Kaitlyn Bedard’s time of 2:28.75. Isabella Donahue came in third place in the 100 hurdles with her time of 18.10 seconds.

Boys’ Tennis

Old Saybrook was able to get in one match last week and earned a win to boot. The victory moved the Rams’ record to 5-3 on the season.

On April 24, Old Saybrook hosted Morgan and secured a 4-3 win against the Huskies. The Rams received all their wins on the singles courts with Enes Cecunjanin getting the 6-3, 6-4 victory in the No. 1 match. Jason Rothman earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot. Luke Brodeur snagged a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the No. 3 position, while Paddy Ryan netted a 6-2, 6-2 triumph in the No. 5 match.

Girls’ Tennis

The Rams had one lone match on the slate last week and were able to take home a victory. With the win, Old Saybrook moved to a record of 4-5 on the season so far.

On April 24, the Rams headed to Clinton where they were victorious in a 5-2 road decision against Morgan.

Golf

The Old Saybrook golf team took a win and a loss in two matches last week. With the split, the Rams’ record stands even at 3-3 on the season.

On April 24, Old Saybrook lost a 170-180 decision against Portland at the Portland Golf Course. The next day, the Rams had a road matchup with Hale-Ray, and they grabbed at 179-183 win over the Noises.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Rams dropped their only game on the schedule last week. The loss bumps Old Saybrook’s record down to 1-7 on the season.

On April 23, the Rams traveled to Cromwell where they lost a 13-4 contest against the Panthers.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook picked up a victory in the only game on last week’s slate. The victory pushes the Rams to a 7-2 record so far on the year.

On April 27, Old Saybrook secured a 16-10 road victory at non-conference opponent Branford.
