The Hand baseball team solidified its spot in the playoffs by winning an extra-inning thriller versus Hamden last week. The Tigers, who also took a pair of defeats, have an overall record of 8-3 to go with a mark of 4-0 in the SCC Oronoque Division.
The Tigers lost to North Haven by a 5-1 score on April 23. Kevin Girardi hit a double for Hand in the loss. The following day, Hand dropped a 5-4 decision versus Cheshire.
On April 25, the Tigers clinched their bid in the Class L State Tournament by defeating Oronoque opponent Hamden 3-2 in 13 innings. Julian Banerji had three hits, including the winning walk-off double that scored Jared Kuryan, who had singled, in the bottom of the 13th inning. Banerji also tossed six scoreless innings of relief to get the win on the hill. Anthony DePino also had three hits in the victory.
Softball
The Tigers stand at 4-5 following a split of two recent contests.
Hand took a 5-2 loss against Guilford on April 23. Then on April 25, the Tigers notched a 4-1 victory over East Lyme.
Boys’ Volleyball
Hand improved to 6-2 after winning two of its three matchups last week.
On April 22, Hand swept Kolbe Cathedral by a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-18) final. The Tigers then took a 3-0 defeat against on Newtown on April 24. The next day, Hand bounced back with a 3-1 victory versus Xavier.
Boys’ Tennis
The Tigers improved to 10-0 by picking up two more triumphs in last week’s action. Hand earned a 6-1 win over North Haven on April 23 and posted a 7-0 shutout against Amity the following day.
On the season, No. 1 singles player Josh Israel has a record of 10-0, as does Sebastien Lowy at No. 3 singles and David Levchenko at No. 4 singles. Noah Gulla is 9-1 at the No. 2 slot. On the doubles side, the Tigers’ teams of Darby Rogers and Reilly Vejar, Nick Chieppo and Will deChabert, and James Watkins and John Van Ostenbridge all have records of 10-0.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Tigers grabbed a victory over Guilford last week. Hand defeated Guilford by the final tally of 106-35 on April 23.
Boys’ Golf
Hand raised its record to 5-2 after recently winning two of three. The Tigers notched a 157-186 win versus Amity on April 23, defeated Branford by a 157-203 final the next day, and then took a 148-153 defeat against Fairfield Prep on April 25.
Versus Amity, Jake Bennett and Conner Quinn each shot 38 to earn co-medalist honors as the top golfers on the day. Quinn had an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole to highlight his round. Aidan Stuart a shot 40, while Matthew Doyle scored a 41 in the win.
Against Branford, Doyle shot an even-par 35 to earn medalist honors for Hand. Quinn shot 39, Jake Bennett finished with 41, and Stuart scored a 42.
In the Prep match, Doyle posted another score of 35 and was co-medalist of the match. Michael McKeon shot his low round of the year with a 38. Bennett shot a 39, Stuart totaled a score of 41.
Girls’ Golf
The Tigers lost two of three last week and have a record of 2-2 this spring.
Hand took a 186-205 defeat against Cheshire on April 23. The Tigers rebounded the next day by netting a 198-200 victory over Avon. Angie Balzano and Erickson Richard were co-medalists of the match by turning in their respective rounds 47.
On April 25, Hand dropped a 200-215 decision versus Lauralton Hall.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Tigers split two contests in last week’s action and are now 6-3.
Hand recorded 13-9 victory over Barlow on April 20. Tom Swank had six goals with two assists for the Tigers, who also saw Jack Flanagan (2 goals, 3 assists), Tom Ferrick (3 goals, 1 assist), Liam McParland (1 goal, 1 assist), Tripp Bordiere (1 goal), and Shane Reiner (1 assist) make their way onto the score sheet in the win. Griffin Fitzmaurice made 13 saves in net for Hand, which outshot Barlow by a 36-27 differential.
Then on April 24, the Tigers took a 6-3 loss versus Guilford.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Hand is now 6-4 this spring after taking three recent defeats.
The Tigers lost a 9-7 contest against Branford on April 23. Two days later, Hand took a 17-4 loss against Glastonbury. Then on April 27, Hand lost to Pomperaug by the final score of 10-6.
