H-K Baseball Seals Spot in States; Track Teams Sweep Tri-Meets

Baseball

The Haddam-Killingworth baseball team qualified for the postseason while improving to 10-1 following a three-win week.

The Cougars clinched their berth in the Class M State Tournament on April 24, when they earned a 14-0 victory over Westbrook in a game that was called after five innings due to the mercy rule. Jon Civiello and Darren Hiller had three hits apiece to lead H-K’s 14-hit attack. Christo Garrelts earned the win on the mound and struck out seven batters in the game.

The next day, H-K edged out Cromwell by a 2-1 final. Hiller had two hits and scored a run for the Cougars. Alden Halfinger struck out five in three innings of scoreless relief work.

Then on April 27, H-K notched a 6-3 win against Old Lyme. Sam Erskine and Alec Erskine each had two hits in the victory. Alec Erskine struck out seven while picking up the win in relief.

Softball

H-K took two of three last week to move to 5-5 on the spring.

The Cougars started the week by blanking Portland 3-0 on April 23. The following day, H-K posted a 21-1 rout versus Westbrook in a contest that was halted by the mercy rule following the fifth inning. H-K’s offense was led by Ella McGlynn and Kat McQueeney, who both had three hits with four RBI. Adelle Biondi earned the win in the circle by giving up just one run with five strikeouts in four innings. Crystal Lentz pitched a scoreless fifth to finish off the win.

On April 25, H-K took a 5-3 defeat against Cromwell.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Haddam-Killingworth started off its dual-meet season by hosting a meet against East Hampton and North Branford on April 23. The Cougars defeated North Branford by the score of 142-30 to go with a 108-42 victory over East Hampton at the meet.

H-K was led by the following first-place finishers at the meet: Luke Sodergren in the 110 hurdles (16.0) and 300 hurdles (42.3), Seth Regan for the 100 (11.5) and 200 (23.8), Dalton Brown in the long jump (18-7) and triple jump (37-4). Also claiming victory for the Cougars were Christian Uzwiak in the 3,200 (10:30), Eamon Sweeney in the high jump (5-8), Trey Callendar in the shot put (47-5), Wally Sample for the javelin (126-8)), Tyler Knappin the pole vault (12-0), and Colton Lavioe in the discus (127-0). H-K’s 4x400 and 4x800 relays were also victorious on the day.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Cougars earned wins versus North Branford (112-33) and East Hampton (79-71) when they hosted a tri-meet on April 23.

Autumn Coady took first place in the 100 hurdles (17.0), Emma Anziano won the 800 (2:32), Gabby Lester claimed first in the shot put (26-11), Reilly Jenkins was first for the javelin (83-7), and Grace-Ann Purcell claimed top honors in the triple jump (28-3) for Haddam-Killingworth. The Cougars also saw their 4x400 and 4x800 relays finish first at the meet.

Golf

H-K is now 2-2 after splitting two matches on the links last week.

The Cougars dropped a 167-204 decision to Old Lyme on April 23. Andrew Kuehn shot a 47 for H-K and was joined on the course by Kaisone Bounphakdy (48), Colby Pendleton (54), and Greg Lynskey (55).

Two days later, H-K defeated Valley Regional by a 204-226 score. Colby Pendleton shot a 47 to earn medalist honors as the low scorer in the match. Kuehn finished with a round of 50, Lynskey shot a 52, and Carter Chase scored a 55 in the victory.

Girls’ Tennis

H-K split two recent matches to move to 2-8 on the year.

The Cougars edged out Portland by a 4-3 final on April 23. H-K then took a 6-1 loss against Cromwell the following day.

Boys’ Tennis

The Cougars are 2-8 this season following two defeats last week

On April 23, H-K dropped a 7-0 decision to Coginchug. The next day, the Cougars lost to Cromwell by that same score.

Boys’ Lacrosse

H-K moved to 3-4 after losing two recent contests.

The Cougars lost to Morgan by the score of 14-6 on April 23. Two days later, H-K dropped a 12-11 decision against North Branford.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Cougars took two defeats last week and are now 0-7 this spring.

On April 24, H-K lost a 19-5 decision versus Mercy. The day after that, the Cougars took an 18-5 loss against North Branford.
