The Branford girls’ lacrosse team played four games last week and came away with two wins to move to 5-5 on the season. The Hornets earned road victories versus Shelton and Hand, took a home loss against Conard, and then took a home loss against Old Saybrook in last week’s matchups.

Branford started its week by posting a 16-4 victory in Shelton on April 22. The Hornets took a 9-2 lead into halftime and then outscored the Gaels 7-2 during the second half to run away with the win. Freshman Isla Lionetti turned in a huge performance by scoring six goals to go with three assists for Branford. Junior Isabel Mannle had three goals and two assists, while fellow junior Camdyn Dunn and freshman Julia McHenry both scored a pair of goals. Junior Karly King, junior Hailey Brunner, and freshman Nina Shamas added one goal apiece. Junior goalie Brooke O’Leary made two saves in net.

The next day, the Hornets notched a 9-7 win against Hand at the Surf Club in a rematch of last year’s Class M State Tournament final. Branford scored six of the first eight goals on the night for a 6-2 advantage at intermission. The Hornets then held off Hand’s comeback effort in the second half to secure the win. O’Leary came up big in goal by making 11 saves for Branford. King scored four goals, Mannle had three goals, and junior Brianna Shaw scored two goals. McHenry contributed an assist in the victory

Two days later, Branford dropped a 12-6 decision against non-conference opponent Conard in a home game. Conard was up 7-5 at halftime and then won the second half by a 5-1 margin to get the victory. King and Mannle both scored a pair of goals, while Lionetti and senior Carly Shea each scored one goal. Shaw and senior Grace Paleski both had an assist for the Hornets, who saw O’Leary make seven saves in goal.

Then on April 27, the Hornets hosted Old Saybrook for another non-conference contest and lost to the Rams by the score of 16-10.
