The Old Saybrook baseball team picked up a pair of wins and a loss on a slate of three games last week. With these results, the Rams’ record moved to 5-4 on the season.
On April 16, the Rams hosted Hale-Ray and took an 8-7 home loss against the Noises. Old Saybrook took an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Hale-Ray cut the Rams’ lead in half with a run in the top of the fifth inning, but Old Saybrook scored in the bottom of the inning to maintain the two-run lead. Then in the top of the sixth the Noises scored four more runs to go ahead, 5-3. Old Saybrook put four runs up in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead at 7-5. Then in the top of the seventh inning, the Hale-Ray scored three more runs to take the lead for good, and the Rams were unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh resulting in the 8-7 final.
Jaden Rolon provided two hits, two runs, and two RBI in the loss, while Luke Duffy had a run scored, two hits, and two RBI. Cooper Pavlovich knocked a couple of hits and scored a run, and Davis Brown supplied a hit and a run. Jack Colella had a pair of hits and drove in a run, and Jordan Butler also provided an RBI.
The next day, Head Coach Nick Hahn’s squad grabbed a blowout 12-1 home victory against East Hampton. Old Saybrook scored an early run in the bottom of the first to go up 1-0, and then in third inning, the Rams put five runs across the plate to take a 6-0 lead. The Bellringers scored a single run in the top of the fourth inning, and Old Saybrook added six more in the bottom of the fifth to make it 12-1. After East Hampton was unable to respond in the top of the fifth, the Rams were ruled the victors via the mercy rule.
Rolon scored two runs on two hits, while Butler had three hits, three runs scored and an RBI. Brown also had three base knocks, two RBI, and a run scored. Colella drove in two runs to go with two hits and two runs scored. Patrick Kelley provided a hit, a run, and two RBI, while Pavlovich had a hit, a run, and an RBI. Toby Marineau got the win on the mound with four innings of work allowing just a hit and a run. Kyle Colella came on in relief for an inning to close the game.
On April 18, the Rams defeated Bacon Academy in a 9-1 road victory courtesy of some early firepower. Old Saybrook scored five runs in the top of the first inning to get out to the hot start and added on with a run in the second, two runs in the third, and another run in the fourth. The Rams held a 9-0 lead from the fourth to the bottom of the seventh when Bacon Academy put a runner across the plate to make it 9-1.
Brown had a big night going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run, and Kelley was 2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs, and two walks. Jack Colella (2 hits, 1 RBI, 2 runs), Dan Cote (1 hit, 1 run, 1 RBI), and Pavlovich (1 hit, 1 run) all provided some offensive support in the win.
Rolon threw four innings, allows three hits and striking out four batters, and Gabe Kaar threw three innings of relief, allowing a single run on five hits and four Ks.
Softball
Old Saybrook took two losses last week on a slate of two games against Shoreline Conference opponents. The defeats dropped the Rams’ record to 2-6 on the year.
On April 16, Old Saybrook hosted Hale-Ray and took a tough 12-0 loss in the home contest. Hale-Ray scored early and often to build a five-run lead in the second inning that only grew as the game wore on.
On April 17, the Rams lost a 24-16 home matchup against East Hampton. After the first inning, the game was ties at 2-2, but East Hampton put a five-run second inning together. In the top of the third inning, the Bellringers added 10 more runs to put the game well out of reach at 17-4 in the top of the third. Old Saybrook started to fight back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but East Hampton got them right back with a two spot in the top of the fifth inning for a 19-11 lead. Old Saybrook would score five runs in each of the fifth and sixth inning, but the lead was insurmountable en route to the 24-16 final.
Lexie Root, Christina Lombardi and Maeve Foley each had three hits a piece for the Rams. Taylor Cote also had a two-run homer in the sixth.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Old Saybrook notched a win and took a loss on a docket of two games last week. With the split, the Rams’ record moved to 5-2 on the season.
On April 16, Old Saybrook hosted Morgan and scored a 15-7 home victory over the Huskies. Two days later, North Branford came to town for another Shoreline Conference matchup, and the Rams dropped a 17-8 game against the Thunderbirds.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Rams lost both of the games they had scheduled last week. After the results, Old Saybrook’s record dropped to 6-1 on the season
On April 16, the Rams lost a difficult 14-5 road contest against Morgan. The Rams fell behind early with Morgan jumping out to a 10-2 lead the half. Nolan Heiden scored three goals, while Ian Mason and Alem Tiden scored a goal apiece for Old Saybrook in the loss.
Two days later, Old Saybrook headed to North Branford where they dropped a 13-1 road game.
Boys’ Tennis
Old Saybrook had a pair of matches on the schedule last week and lost both decisions. The Rams’ record dropped to 4-3 on the year with the defeats.
On April 16, Old Saybrook took a 5-2 home defeat against Westbrook. Enes Cecunjanin earned a 6-0 6-0 victory in the No. 2 singles match. In the No. 1 doubles spot, the duo of Shon Ryan and Tim Reid secured a 6-4, 7-5 win in a hard fought contest.
The next day, the Rams hosted Cromwell and dropped a 6-1 home decision against the Panthers.
Girls’ Tennis
The Rams lost both of the matches that were on their schedule last week. The two defeats moved Old Saybrook’s record to 3-5 on the season.
On April 16, the Rams headed to Cromwell where they dropped a 5-2 decision versus the Panthers. The next day, Old Saybrook lost by the same score of 5-2 in a road match against Westbrook. Amy Young earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 singles match, and at the No. 4 singles spot, Audra Guigno came away with a 6-3, 6-0 win.
