Branford Boys’ Lacrosse Posts 17-3 Blowout Over Hamden

The Branford boys’ lacrosse team moved to 4-3 on the season after splitting a pair of contests in last week’s action. Branford lost a game versus Hand, but came back to post a convincing victory over Hamden later in the week.

The Hornets started off their week by traveling to Madison to face off with Hand on April 15. Branford took an 18-8 defeat against the Tigers at the Surf Club.

Two days later, the Hornets had a home game against Hamden and defeated the Green Dragons by the lopsided score of 17-3. Branford held a 3-1 lead after the first period and then outscored Hamden 7-1 in the second period to increase its advantage to 10-2 at halftime. The Hornets ran away with the victory by outscoring Hamden 5-1 durin the third quarter and 2-0 in the fourth en route to the 14-point win.

Senior Rob Lionetti led Branford’s offense by netting seven goals to go with one assist in the victory. Junior Jack Manware scored four goals, while senior Will Riggs had three goals and one assist for the Hornets. Senior Max Bunton had two goals with an assist, and junior Max Manware scored a goal and had two assists. Junior Aiden MacNeil, sophomore Nick Chieffo, and fellow sophomore Julio Tozetto each contributed one assist for Head Coach Jim May’s squad. Sophomore Josh Gottschalk got the start in net and made seven saves to help the Hornets prevail.

During the previous week’s action, Branford hosted North Branford for a non-conference game and claimed a 17-4 victory on April 13. Lionetti had six goals with two assists, and Manware also scored six goals to go with a pair of assists for Branford. Riggs had three goals and an assist, junior Max Manware scored a goal and had two assists, senior Mike Parker added a goal, and MacNeil and sophomore Jared Yakimoff both had one assist apiece in the win. Gottschalk made five saves in net for the Hornets.
