The Westbrook girls’ tennis team played two matches on the same day and won both battles. With the pair of victories, the Knights’ record moved to 6-3 on the season.
On April 17, Westbrook hosted two teams in Portland and Old Saybrook and beat both Shoreline Conference foes. Head Coach Paula Fitzgerald’s squad grabbed its first win by a 7-0 tally over Portland. Sara Farnoli earned a 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match, and Julia Farnoli netted a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot. Gabriella Koplas took a 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 3 position. At the No. 4 spot, Sadie Susi notched a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.
On the doubles courts, the No. 1 duo of Savannah Marshall and Lexi Koplas secured a 6-2, 6-1 win, and Olivia Archer and Juliana Frabrizi scored a 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 match, Alexandra Zanzalari and Gianni Salisbury won by a score of 6-1, 6-1.
Later that day, the Knights earned their second win with a 5-2 decision over Old Saybrook.
Farnoli didn’t drop a single game in her 6-0, 6-0 victory, and Farnoli took the 6-4, 6-1 win.
In doubles matches, Marshall and Koplas (6-1, 6-0) won at the No. 1 spot; Archer and Frabrizi (6-1, 6-0) took the No. 2 match; and Zanzalari and Gianni Salisbury (6-2, 6-1) earned the victory in the No. 3 position.
Boys’ Tennis
Westbrook played in two matches last week and earned wins in both of them to continue their stellar play through the first half of the spring. The Knights improved their record to 7-2 on the year with the victories.
On April 16, Head Coach Dan Shapiro’s squad headed to Old Saybrook and secured a 5-2 win against the Rams. Nate Comment took a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 singles match. At the No. 3 position, Cooper Whitehouse snagged a 6-0, 6-4 win, while Jesse McGannon netted a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot. Joey Caslin scored a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 5 match. The duo of Mason Malchiodi and Gareth Whitehouse got the 6-1, 2-6, 10-7 win in the No. 2 doubles match
The next day, Westbrook grabbed shutout 7-0 home victory over Platt Tech. On the singles slate, Comment (6-0, 6-0) took the No. 1 match; Finn McGannon (0-6, 6-4, 11-9) won at the No. 2 position; Whitehouse (6-2, 6-3) got the win at the No. 3 position; Jesse McGannon (6-0, 6-0) earned a No. 4 match win; and Caslin (6-0, 6-0) won the No. 5 match.
In doubles, Jack Lyman and Lukas Francis netted a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 1 position, and Malchiodi and Gareth Whitehouse earned the shutout 6-0, 6-0 triumph at the No. 2 spot.
Softball
The Westbrook softball team picked up its first win of the season on a slate of two games last week. With the split decisions, the Knights’ record moved to 1-7 on the year.
On April 17, Westbrook headed to North Branford to face the reigning Shoreline Conference Champions for three years running and took an 18-3 road defeat.
Westbrook struck first with three runs in the top of the first inning, but North Branford responded with 11 runs in the bottom of the inning and never trailed again.
Jamie Merola’s first-inning double drove in a pair of runs for Westbrook, and Juliana Gerena and Madison Marshall scored on the play. Merola later scored in the inning on a passed ball.
The next day, the Knights took their first victory of the year in a wild 12-11 road win over Career.
Baseball
The Knights lost a pair of contests last week with games against two Shoreline Conference opponents on the slate. With the two defeats, the Knights record fell to 3-6 on the season.
On April 16, Head Coach Derek Hanssen’s squad hosted Valley Regional and took a 13-3 home loss against the Warriors. The Knights took a hit in the early goings allowing a single run in the top of the first inning, and then in the fourth inning, Valley added four more runs to take a commanding 5-0 advantage that they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way. Westbrook added two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and another in the bottom of the six, but at that point the Warriors had a 10-run advantage, which resulted in the game being called after six innings on account of the mercy rule.
Dan Perreault supplied a hit and scored a run in the loss, while Quinn Ernst earned a pair of hits. Kyle Robison worked a walk and scored a run, and Jack Farrell took two free passes to the base paths and scored a run. Connor Cruz and David McCain notched hits in the loss, while Zachary True had a run batted in.
The next day, Westbrook headed to North Branford and lost a 6-1 road matchup with the Thunderbirds. The Knights allowed a run in the bottom of the first, two runs in each the bottom of the second and bottom of the third, and one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning to fall behind 6-0. The Knights got a run back in the top of the fifth inning, but could not muster anymore offense.
Cruz provided two hits, while Cameron Marshall and True added a hit apiece.
