Westbrook Boys’ Tennis Posts Trio of Victories; Baseball Walks Off Against East Hampton

Boys’ Tennis

The Westbrook boys’ tennis team notched three wins in three contests last week. The victories pushed the Knights record to 5-2 on the season.

On April 9, Head Coach Dan Shapiro’s squad defeated Coginchaug in a 6-1 road win. Nate Comment took a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 1 singles position, and Cooper Whitehouse earned a shutout win 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot. Jesse McGannon scored a 6-0, 6-0 shutout in the No. 4 singles’ match, while Joey Caslin won a 6-0, 6-1 decision at the No. 5 position. In doubles, the duo of Jack Lyman and Lukas Francis netted a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 spot, and Ben Schrek and Mason Malchiodi took a 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 2 match.

The next day, Westbrook secured a 7-0 road win against East Hampton. Comment won his match 6-3, 6-4. Finn McGannon won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 singles position. Cooper Whitehouse (6-1, 6-0); Jesse McGannon (6-1, 6-2); and Caslin (6-0, 6-0) each won their matches. In doubles, Lyman and Schrek won by a 6-1, 6-0 decision at the No. 1 spot, while Malchiodi and Gareth Whitehouse took a 6-0, 6-0 match at the No. 2 position.

On April 12, Westbrook grabbed a 5-2 win at home versus Old Lyme. Cooper Whitehouse earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the No. 2 singles match. Jesse McGannon won the No. 3 singles matchup, 6-3, 6-4. Joey Casline took the No. 4 match by a 6-3, 6-2 score, while the No. 5 contest went to Westbrook by default. In doubles, Ian Whitehouse and Gareth Whitehouse won a 6-1, 6-0 decision in the No. 2 match.

Girls’ Tennis

Westbrook won two of its three matches last week to move its record to 4-3 on the season. On April 9, the Knights defeated Coginchaug in a 6-1 home victory. The next day, Westbrook defeated East Hampton/Hale-Ray in a 7-0 shutout win at home. On April 12, Westbrook lost a 4-3 road decision against Old Lyme.

Softball

Westbrook took three defeats last week. On April 9, the Knights lost a 21-2 home contest versus Old Saybrook. The next day, Westbrook took a 21-1 road defeat versus Hale-Ray. Then on April 12, Westbrook lost a 12-1 decision at home against East Hampton. The loss dropped the Knights’ record to 0-6 on the season.

Baseball

The Knights added a single victory in three games as part of last week’s action. Head Coach Derek Hanssen’s squad moved to a 3-4 record so far this spring.

On April 9, Westbrook took a tough 6-5 home loss against Old Saybrook on a late-inning score. After going ahead 4-1 in the fourth inning, the Knights gave up four runs in the top of the fifth and relinquished the lead for a 5-4 Old Saybrook advantage. Westbrook fought back in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game, but Old Saybrook got back on top in the seventh to secure the win.

Connor Cruz had three hits and an RBI in the loss, while David McCain, Cameron Marshall, and Kyle Robison each had hits. Quinn Ernst drove in a run, as did Dan Perreault. Zachary True had a hit and an RBI.

The next day, Westbrook took an 8-6 defeat on the road against Hale-Ray. The Noises posted a 2-1 lead in the second, and the Knights tied the game in the top of the third inning. After Westbrook got a go-ahead run in the fourth, Hale-Ray retook the lead with a two-run bottom of the fourth. The Knights battled back to take a 5-4 lead in the fifth, but the Noises put four runs on the board in the sixth to take the lead for good. Westbrook added a run in the seventh, but were unable to muster enough to take down Hale-Ray.

Cruz and True each supplied two hits and two RBI in the loss. Jack Farrel added a hit and two runs.

On April 12, the Knights scored a dramatic walk-off victory at home against East Hampton. Westbrook totaled 11 hits on the night to edge out East Hampton who had 10 hits. The Bellringers scored two runs in the first, and Westbrook cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame. Westbrook tied the game with a run in the second, but East Hampton went back on top with two in the third making it 4-2. The Knights added three runs in the bottom of the third for a 5-4 lead, and the Bellringers got the advantage back in the top of the fourth making it 6-5. Westbrook retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, but gave up the game-tying run to make it 7-7 in the seventh, which led to extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Robison got on base with a single, and Farrell worked a walk after Robison stole second base. Quinn Ernst drove-in the game-winning run with a single to right field for the walk-off win.

Cruz provided three hits, two RBI, and a run, while Robison had three hits, two runs, and an RBI. Quinn Ernst (two hits, three RBI, one run) also had a potent day at the plate for the Knights.
