Hand Baseball Takes Two; Both Tennis Teams Still Perfect

Baseball

The Hand baseball team improved to 4-1 overall and has a record of 1-0 in the SCC Oronoque Division following a week that saw the Tigers take two of three. Hand posted victories versus Fairfield Prep and West Haven to go with a defeat against Amity sandwiched in between last week.

On April 8, the Tigers defeated Fairfield Prep by the score of 8-6 in a rematch of last year’s SCC Tournament final. Anthony DePino had a single to go with a double, a home run, and two RBI for Hand. Kevin Tracy hit a two-run double that tied the game in the sixth inning, while Will Kleinhenz added an RBI single in the victory. Liam Wallace turned in a quality outing on the mound to help seal the win for Hand.

“Anthony DePino had a huge game for us and got us on the board with a deep home run to left field. He also had the go-ahead RBI double to right-center field,” Head Coach Travis LaPointe said. “Kevin Tracy came up really clutch for us with a game-tying, two-run double in the sixth inning. Liam Wallace was awesome in relief. He shut down a really good Fairfield Prep offense.”

Hand took its first loss of the season by dropping an 8-2 decision against Amity on April 10. George Anastasio collected two hits, and Julian Banerji had a single with a run scored. Aiden Patrick pitched three strong innings of relief for the Tigers.

Hand finished its week by claiming an 8-2 victory over West Haven in its first SCC Oronoque Division game of the season on April 12.

Girls’ Tennis

The Tigers ran their record to 4-0 on the year after netting three sweeps last week.

Hand blanked Guilford by a 7-0 final on April 9, before defeating Sacred Heart Academy by that same score just one day later. Then on April 11, the Tigers recorded a 7-0 shutout over Sheehan.

On the week, Sam Riordan, Lindsay Riordan, Annie Barrett, and Eileen Chen all earned singles victories for the Tigers, who also saw Callen Mascia pick up her first varsity win. The Tigers also received wins from their doubles teams of Anna Lang and Claire Langille, Bella Vejar and Paige Van Ostenbridge, and Catherine Aranow and Breanna Colonese-DiBello.

Boys’ Tennis

The Tigers won all three of their matches last week to improve to 5-0 this season.

Hand dispatched Xavier by a 6-1 score on April 8. Two days later, the Tigers beat Fairfield Prep by that same margin. In its last matchup of the week, Hand notched a 7-0 shutout versus Hamden on April 12.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Tigers are 4-1 this season after earning three recent victories.

On April 8, Hand routed Lyman Hall by the score of 21-5. Jack Flanagan had three goals and two assists in the victory. Also contributing for the Tigers’ offense were Shane Reiner (4 goals, 2 assists), Tripp Bordiere (2 goals, 3 assists), Liam McParland (2 goals, 1 assist), Tom Ferrick (1 goal, 2 assists), Luke Watkins (1 goal, 2 assists), Luke Conway (3 assists), Liam Regan (2 goals), Dawson Gara (2 goals), Tatum Fitzmaurice (2 goals), Conner Bergere (1 goal, 1 assist), Trey Palumbo (1 goal), and Sean Scully (1 assist). Griffin Fitzmaurice (4 saves) and Clay Hayden (3 saves) shared the goaltending duties for Hand, which outshot the Trojans 44-16.

Two days after that win, Hand scored a 9-8 overtime victory against Shelton.

On April 12, Hand edged out Longmeadow, Massachusetts by a 10-9 score on April 12. Producing points for Hand in the victory were Tom Swank (4 goals, 1 assist), Flanagan (1 goal, 4 assists), Regan (2 goals), Bordiere (1 goal), McParland (1 goal), Conway (1 goal), Ferrick (1 assist), and Bergere (1 assist). Fitzmaurice made 15 stops as Hand won the shots-on-goal battle by a 36-22 differential.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Tigers won two of their three games last week to improve to 4-1 this spring.

Hand defeated Mercy by the final score of 11-9 on April 9. The Tigers then lost a 14-1 contest against Staples on April 11. The very next day, Hand got back in the win column by notching a 16-5 triumph over Stamford.

Boys’ Golf

Hand moved to 3-1 on the season after winning its last three matches.

The Tigers started off the week by defeating Sheehan 153-195 on April 8. Hand turned around to earn a 161-203 victory over Morgan the next day. Then on April 11, the Tigers posted a convincing 146-190 win versus Guilford.

In the Sheehan victory, Jake Bennett claimed medalist honors by shooting the low score of the meet with a three-under par 33. Aidan Stuart finished with 39, Michael McKeon shot a 40, and Will Fitzgerald scored a 41 for the Tigers.

For the win against Morgan, Conner Quinn was the match medalist with a one-over-par total of 37. Stuart shot a 40, Bennett scored a 41, and McKeon turned in a scorecard of 43.

Quinn and Stuart both shot a 36 for Hand in its win against Guilford. Bennett and Matthew Doyle each finished with a score of 37.

Girls’ Golf

The Tigers started off their 2019 season off in victorious fashion when they earned a 208-223 win over Suffield on April 11.

Angelina Balzano and Molly Meyer shared medalist honors for Hand after both golfers shot a match-low score of 49 in its season-opening victory. Last spring, Head Coach Jon Wilson’s club finished in fourth place at the SCC Championship by totaling a team score of 424.

Boys’ Volleyball

The Tigers won their lone matchup last week and are now 3-1 this year. Hand defeated Shelton by the final score of 3-1 on April 12.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Hand took a loss to Law last week to move to 0-3 this season. On April 9, the Tigers squared off against Law and lost an 85-66 decision.
