H-K Baseball Stays Perfect at 6-0; Softball Wins Big Versus Morgan

Baseball

The Haddam-Killingworth baseball team remains undefeated through the first two weeks of the 2019 season. The Cougars stand with a record of 6-0 after picking up wins versus Valley Regional, North Branford, and Morgan in last week’s action.

H-K defeated Valley Regional by the final score of 11-2 on April 9. Christo Garrelts struck out nine batters to notch his second victory of the season on the mound. Alec Erskine had four hits and three RBI, while Luke DiMauro blasted a grand slam in the seventh inning to help the Cougars run away with the victory.

The Cougars kept their momentum rolling when they posted a 5-1 victory over North Branford the following day. Jon Civiello earned his second win this spring after fanning six batters for Haddam-Killingworth. Alden Halfinger pitched three scoreless innings of relief to shut the door. Jimmy McGoey and Sam Erskine each had two RBI to pace the H-K offense.

H-K wrapped up its week by edging out Morgan for a 2-1 victory on April 12. Carmelo Rosa gave up one hit over five innings to get his second win of the year. Civiello had two hits with a run scored, while Garrelts and Ryan Kellenbach both had an RBI single for the Cougars.

Softball

H-K is 3-3 this year after winning one of its three games last week.

On April 9, the Cougars lost a 6-0 decision against Valley Regional. The next day, H-K faced North Branford and took an 11-5 defeat against the Thunderbirds. The Cougars then finished the week on a high note by claiming an 8-1 win against Morgan on April 12.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Cougars moved to 3-1 this spring following a split of two recent matchups.

H-K opened the week by posting a 17-2 blowout against Old Saybrook on April 9. Two days later, the Cougars took their first loss of the year when they dropped a 14-8 contest versus Old Lyme.

Girls’ Lacrosse

H-K took two defeats last week and is 0-4 on the year.

The Cougars took a 17-5 loss against Old Saybrook on April 9. H-K later faced Old Lyme and lost the game by a 20-9 score on April 12.

Golf

The Cougars are 1-1 early on after splitting their first two contests of the campaign.

Head Coach Josh Hagewood’s club started off its season by notching a 190-262 triumph over North Branford on April 9. Mikey Barile shot a 46 to earn match medalist honors as the low scorer in the match. Greg Lynskey, Andrew Kuehn, and Kaisone Bounphakdy all scored a 48 to help the Cougars emerge victorious.

Two days later, H-K lost a close contest to Morgan by the final tally of 189-192. Colby Pendleton finished with a score of 46 for H-K. Kuehn shot a 47, Lynskey scored a 49, and Barile totaled a score of 50.

Last year, the Cougars shot a collective team score of 385 for their 18-hole round to finish in 14th place the Division III State Championship.

Boys’ Tennis

H-K is 2-4 on the season after losing two recent matches.

The Cougars lost a 6-1 decision against Valley Regional on April 9. The next day, H-K took a 7-0 loss versus Morgan.

Girls’ Tennis

The Cougars took three defeats last week and now have a record of 1-5.

On April 9, H-K took a 7-0 loss against Valley Regional. The Cougars then lost 5-2 decision to Morgan on April 10. Two days later, H-K dropped a close contest versus Coginchaug by a 4-3 score.
