The Guilford baseball team nabbed its first victory of the season when the Indians defeated Hamden last week. Guilford has a record of 1-5 on the year following last week’s action.
On April 10, Guilford got in the win column by earning an 8-7 victory against Hamden. Jack Palmer went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Indians’ offense. Jake Ciocca and Ethan Vashel added two hits and one RBI apiece. Jack Strand picked up the win on the mound, while Kevin Ciardiello notched the save for Head Coach Brian Hayden’s club.
“We got great production from the bottom of our lineup as they combined for seven hits and four RBI. Jack Palmer, Ethan Vashel, and Jake Ciocca really stepped up today for us,” Coach Hayden said. “This was a total team win. We were able to use our approach on offense, and it produced enough runs to overcome some mistakes we made on defense. I thought Jack gave us a gutsy effort on the mound, and Kevin showed tremendous poise as the game hung in the balance and was able to close the door for our first win.”
Guilford lost a 6-2 contest against Cheshire the following day. Then on April 12, the Indians took a 13-0 defeat versus Foran in their SCC Housatonic Division opener. Ciocca and Palmer both had a hit for Guilford in the loss.
Softball
The Indians improved to 1-5 overall with a mark of 1-0 in the SCC Oronoque Division after beating Hamden for their first win on the year last week.
Guilford dropped a 6-2 decision to North Haven on April 10. The day after that, the Indians lost to Cheshire by a 13-0 final. Then on April 12, Guilford defeated divisional foe by the score of Hamden 14-8 in a high-scoring contest.
Against North Haven, Ava Gladwin and Jordyn Goldstein both contributed to double plays to aid the Guilford defense. Allie Petonito broke up North Haven’s no-hit bid by getting a hit in the sixth inning. Emily Torre’s RBI single in the seventh inning put Guilford on the scoreboard.
In the win over Hamden, Jessica Smith led the Guilford’s offense going 2-for-2 with a double and five RBI. Jill Batick and Jordyn Goldstein each had a pair of hits. Torre and Mary Evans both scored three runs for the Indians. Petonito’s base-clearing triple in the sixth inning gave Guilford a comfortable lead. Ema Signore pitched a complete game to notch the victory in the circle.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Guilford owns a perfect record of 4-0 after recording a pair of victories last week.
The Indians edged out defending Class M state champion Branford by a 9-8 final on April 8. Nicolette Spotlow netted three goals for Guilford, while Maddie Costantino and Catherine Larrow both scored two goals apiece. Maddie Epke and Nicole Tepley each added a goal for the Indians, who saw Sydney Widlitz make seven saves in net.
Guilford went on to post a 17-8 victory over Sheehan on April 11. Larrow scored four goals with Hannah Tillier, Costantino, and Epke all contributing three goals. Spotlow had two goals, while Caroline Fitzgerald and Tepley both scored one goal for Guilford. Widlitz recorded six stops in net.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Indians took down two SCC opponents last week to improve their unblemished record to 4-0 this spring.
Guilford routed Branford by a 16-3 score on April 8. Two days later, the Indians claimed a 9-4 win against North Haven.
Boys’ Tennis
The Indians stand at 5-1 this spring after recording a trio of recent victories.
Guilford edged out Amity by 4-3 final on April 8, before beating Xavier by that same score on April 10. Two days later, the Indians posted a 6-1 win over Lyman Hall.
Crew
Guilford turned in a strong showing in its second race of the season that took place at Rogers Lake in Old Lyme on April 11. The Indians came away with victories in three out of the six races on the day.
Guilford competed against Lyme-Old Lyme and Middletown in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four boats, along with the first and second novice eights. The boys’ first varsity eight and novice eight finished first with times of 4:41.1 and 5:20.1, respectively, while the girls’ second varsity eight claimed first at 6:02.1.
The boys’ varsity four came in third place with a mark of 6:12.2, and the second varsity eight placed third at 5:23.8. The Guilford girls’ first varsity eight posted a time of 5:22.8 to defeat Middletown, while losing to Lyme-Old Lyme. The girls’ first novice eight placed second (4:04.4), and the second novice eight finished third (4:23.0) in its race, which was shortened due to windy conditions.
Golf
The Indians lost two contests last week to move to 2-3 on the season
On April 10, Guilford lost a 162-189 decision versus Shelton. The next day, the Indians took a 146-190 defeat against Hand.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Indians are 1-1 on the year following a close loss against Hillhouse. Guilford dropped a 74-70 decision to the Academics on April 9.
Elijah Dillon took first place in the 1,600 by running a time of 5:03.78 at the meet The Indians also received victories from Ben Crair in the 3,200 (10:57.45), Uziah Newsome in the triple jump (36-4), Bailey Meyers in the pole vault (10-6), and Connor Rose in the discus (122-7). Guilford’s 4x800 relay team of Will Dinauer, Griffin Hughes, Cameron Hubbard, and McKendry Eschinger came in first place (9:08.95), as did the 4x100 relay of Filip Kostic, Jaylen Dolmus, Nick Celotto, and Logan Roberts (49.58).
Girls’ Outdoor Track
Guilford took a defeat against Hillhouse in a recent matchup and is now 0-2 on the year. On April 19, the Indians lost to Hillhouse by the final score of 95-36.
Meredith Bloss claimed first place in the 1,600 (in 5:36) and 3,200 (13:26) to go with second-place performance in the 800 (2:39.87). Gianna Siciliano took first in the 800 (2:35.97) and placed second in the 1,600 (5:37.08) for the Indians. Kelsi Putnam finished second in both the 400 (68.75) and the 3,200 (13:30), while Sabrina Koff was the runner-up in the javelin (70-7).
