Westbrook Baseball, Tennis Squads Begin Season with Splits

Baseball

The Westbrook baseball team started its year by gaining a split of four games in last week’s action. The Knights scored victories versus Griswold and Cromwell to go with losses against Portland and Old Lyme for a mark of 2-2 on the young season.

On March 30, Westbrook prevailed by the score of 12-5 at Griswold. With the score knotted at 3-3, Westbrook plated three runs in fourth inning and then added five runs in the fifth en route to the win. Conor Cruz had three hits, three runs scored, and two RBI in the victory. David McCain had two hits, two runs, and one RBI, while Cameron Marshall had one hit with three walks, three runs, and three RBI. Dan Perreault added two hits, and Kyle Robison had a hit with three RBI for the Knights.

Two days later, Westbrook claimed a 12-4 victory at Cromwell. Westbrook held a 7-0 lead after three innings and ran away with the win. Cruz had four hits and scored two runs, while Robison had a hit with two RBI and a pair of runs. Tavish Ernst collected three base hits and drove in four runs for Westbrook. Quinn Ernst supplied three hits and three RBI.

On April 3, Westbrook lost a 13-6 decision at Portland. Westbrook trailed 6-0 after three innings, but rallied to tie the game in the fifth. However, Portland came back with seven unanswered runs and went on to get the victory. Perreault had a hit and two RBI, as did Tavish Ernst.

Three days later, the Knights lost a 10-0 contest at Old Lyme.

Softball

The Knights took defeats in their first three games of the season last week.

On April 1, Westbrook dropped an 18-2 contest at Cromwell. Alivia Ciarcia had a hit with a run scored and an RBI for Westbrook. Madison Marshall added a hit and an RBI.

Two days later, Westbrook lost a wild road game against Portland by the final score of 25-13. It was a back-and forth matchup that was tied at 13-13 until the top of the seventh, when Portland put up a big 12-run inning. Ciarcia had two hits, two runs, and three RBI, and Jamie Merola added two hits and scored three runs for the Knights. Marshall drove in two runs on two hits and also scored a run, while Juliana Greena had two hits with a run scored and an RBI.

On April 4, the Knights took a 26-0 home loss versus Old Lyme.

Boys’ Tennis

The Knights went 2-2 during the opening week of their campaign.

On March 30, Westbrook lost a 7-0 road match at Stonington. Two days later, Westbrook posted a 7-0 home win against Haddam-Killingworth. Nate Comment secured a 6-0, 6-4 victory in the No. 1 singles match for the Knights. Finn McGannon won via default at the No. 2 spot. Cooper Whitehouse scored a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, Jesse McGannon won a 6-0, 6-1 decision in the No. 4 match, and Joey Caslin scored a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 5 position. In doubles, Westbrook’s No. 1 team of Jack Lyman and Lukas Francis won by the score of 6-2, 6-2. Ben Schreck and Mason Malchiodi prevailed 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 duel.

On April 3, Westbrook recorded a 5-2 road victory versus Valley Regional. Comment (6-3, 7-5), Whitehouse (6-0, 6-1), and Joey Caslin (6-2, 6-1) all earned wins on the singles court. For doubles play, the teams of Lyman and Francis (6-0, 6-2), and Schreck and Machiodi (6-1, 6-3) were both victorious.

The next day, Westbrook hosted Morgan and took a 6-1 loss. The Knights’ No. 2 doubles team Ben Schreck and Mason Malchiodi earned a 6-1, 6-3 win.

Girls’ Tennis

Westbrook notched a pair of wins in its four-game slate last week.

On March 30, Westbrook lost a 4-3 home match against North Branford. Two days later, the Knights won a 5-2 decision at Haddam-Killingworth. On April 3, Westbrook lost to Valley Regional by a 5-2 final at home. The next day, Westbrook earned a 6-1 road win over Morgan.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Knights competed at the Bellringer Invitational on April 6 and finished in 10th place at the meet.

Kelly Donlan had a big day for the Knights by placing second in the shot put (32 feet-9 inches), taking second in the javelin (83-6), and finishing third for the discus (85-8) on behalf of Westbrook.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Westbrook came 15th place at the Bellringer Invitational last week. Michael Gingras finished sixth in the pole vault with a height of 11 feet for the Knights.
