Rams’ Tennis Teams Post Three Wins Apiece in First Week

Boys’ Tennis

The Old Saybrook boys’ tennis team earned three wins in four matches during the first week of the 2019 spring season. The Rams dropped a decision against Morgan in their opener, but came back to notch victories versus Valley Regional, Coginchaug, and East Hampton for a record of 3-1.

On March 30, the Old Saybrook lost a 4-3 contest at Morgan. Enes Cecunjanin earned a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, while Luke Broduer claimed a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 3 match. The Rams’ No. 1 doubles team of Tim Reid and Griffin Noack gutted out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

On April 2, the Rams grabbed a 7-0 home win against Valley Regional. Jason Rothman posted a 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles match, while Cecunjanin (6-1, 6-4) and Broduer (6-3, 6-3) prevailed at the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively. Jack Adams picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles, and Paddy Ryan earned a 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 10-3 win at No. 5. In doubles, the No. 1 duo of Shon Ryan and Reid took home a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Logan Hilger and Logan Medbury recorded a 6-4, 10-7 win at the No. 2 spot.

On April 3, the Rams won a 5-2 decision at Coginchaug. The day after that, they shut out East Hampton by a 7-0 score at home.

Girls’ Tennis

The Rams had four contests last week and came away with three victories to stand at 3-1 early on.

On March 30, the Rams scored a 5-2 home win against Morgan. Three days later, Old Saybrook lost a 5-2 road match versus Valley Regional. On April 3, the Rams earned a 4-3 home win over Coginchaug. The next day, Old Saybrook claimed a 4-3 victory against East Hampton/Hale-Ray.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Old Saybrook finished in second place at the East Hampton Invitational by posting a team score of 94.5 points on April 6.

Shane Henderson claimed first place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:34.12 for the Rams. Cooper Luciani came in first place for the 300 intermediate hurdles by running a time of 40.44 seconds.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Rams took fourth place with 85 points scored at last week’s East Hampton Invitational.

Jessica Stratton finished first in the 1,600 by timing in at 5:18.38 for Old Saybrook. Cate Coppes earned first place in the pole vault with a height of 10 feet-6 inches.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook won two of three during the first week of its campaign.

On April 1, Old Saybrook secured a 21-5 home victory against Wolcott. On April 5, the Rams hosted Old Lyme and dropped a 17-12 decision. The next day, Old Saybrook got back into the win column with a 19-5 road victory against Rockville.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Rams claimed a lopsided victory to go with two losses last week.

On March 30, the Rams lost a 6-3 home game versus Ledyard-Griswold. Three days later, Old Saybrook hosted Vinal Tech-Goodwin Tech and posted a 13-0 shutout. Then on April 4, Old Saybrook took a 17-1 defeat against Old Lyme in a home game.

Golf

The Rams lost a close match against Portland to begin the 2019 season. Od Saybrook hosted the Highlanders at Fenwick Golf Course and dropped a 172-173 decision on April 2.

Baseball

Old Saybrook took a pair of defeats in the first week of its season.

On April 1, the Rams lost to Haddam-Killingworth by a 10-0 score on the road. Jordan Butler had two hits, while Jaden Rolon and Jack Colella each added one hit for Old Saybrook.

Two days later, Old Saybrook hosted Coginchaug and lost a 4-2 decision. Trailing 4-0 in the sixth inning, the Rams rallied for a pair of runs to cut the deficit in half. Butler, Gabe Kaar, Nicholas Condulis, Colella, and Cooper Pavlovich had one hit apiece. Pavlovich and Colella both drove in a run. Davis Brown pitched six innings and allowed three earned runs for the Rams.

Softball

The Rams lost three contests during the opening week of the spring season.

On April 1, Old Saybrook took a 6-5 defeat at Haddam-Killingworth. The Rams went up 2-0 in the first inning and then added another run in the second. The Cougars scored single runs in each of the next three innings to tie the game at 3-3. After Old Saybrook scored two runs in fifth inning, H-K plated three runs in the sixth to take a 6-5 lead.

On April 3, the Rams lost to Coginchaug by a 25-6 final at home. Taylor Cote had a two hits with two runs scored and three RBI for Old Saybrook. Christina Lombardi had two hits with a run and an RBI, while Kendall Kollmer added a pair of hits.

The following day, Old Saybrook took a 12-0 home loss against Cromwell.
