Rosa Throws a No-No to Help H-K Open 3-0; Softball, Boys’ Lacrosse Both Get Two Wins

Baseball

The Haddam-Killingworth baseball team stormed out to 3-0 start by defeating Old Saybrook, Hale-Ray, and East Hampton in its first three games of the season. Junior Carmelo Rosa threw a no-hitter for the Cougars when they posted a 2-0 shutout over East Hampton in their final game of the stretch on April 5.

H-K started the year with a 10-0 shutout against Old Saybrook on April 1. Christo Garrelts struck out nine in five innings to get the win on the mound for H-K. He also had three RBI at the dish. Luke Dimauro, Mike O’Toole, and Griffin Izzo each had two hits in the victory.

The Cougars then defeated Hale-Ray by the final score of 11-4 on April 3. Jon Civiello earned the win by fanning five four innings and also helped his cause by producing four hits at the plate. Civiello, O’Toole, and Izzo all had a double for the Cougars in their 15-hit attack.

H-K capped off its week by posting a 2-0 shutout against East Hampton on April 5 as Rosa tossed a no-hitter with four strikeouts in his first varsity start. Sam Erskine and O’Toole both had an RBI double to help H-K plate a pair of runs in the sixth inning.

Mark Brookes returns for his 43rd season as the Cougars’ skipper after guiding the team to a record of 18-4 in 2018.

Softball

The Cougars are 2-1 to start the year after taking two of their first three games. H-K defeated Old Saybrook and East Hampton to go with a loss versus Hale-Ray last week.

H-K edged out Old Saybrook by a 6-5 final on April 1. Faith Torello picked up the win for H-K by pitching three innings of relief. H-K won the game by rallying for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring all three runs with two outs and nobody on base. Faith Mauri doubled to center and then scored on a single by Ella McGlynn. After McGlynn advanced to second base on a wild pitch, Shannon Nelson hit a single to center to score McGlynn and tie the game. Rachel Mauri followed by hitting a triple to right field that brought in Nelson for the go-ahead run.

On April 3, H-K dropped a 5-3 decision against Hale-Ray. The Cougars then defeated East Hampton 13-1 two days later. Brooke LaTouche earned the win on the mound by striking out 10 and walking none. Kat McQueeney went 3-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, a double, and a run scored for the Cougars. Shannon Nelson, Faith Mauri, and Adelle Biondi each had two hits.

Boys’ Lacrosse

H-K is out to a 2-0 start after posting two wins during the first week of play.

The Cougars began their campaign by squeaking out an 8-6 win over North Branford on April 2. Two days later, H-K posted a 17-1 rout over Cromwell.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Cougars lost their first two games of the season last week.

The Cougars drooped an 18-8 contest against Branford on April 1. The next day, H-K lost to North Branford by the score of 21-6.

Girls’ Tennis

H-K has a record of 1-2 to begin the 2019 season.

The Cougars claimed a 6-1 win over Cromwell on March 30. Abby Larkin (6-1, 6-1), Lauren Miller (6-2, 6-4), and Shelby Whitehead (6-0, 6-1) all prevailed in singles competition for the Cougars, who also won all three doubles matches.

H-K took a 5-2 loss versus Westbrook on April 1. In doubles, the team of Payton Pazsak and Ashley Hamilton (3-6, 6-2, 6-1) earned a victory for H-K, as did the duo of Jessica Duffield and Lizzy Celano (6-0, 6-0).

Three days later, H-K lost a 6-1 decision to North Branford. The team of Duffield and Celano notched a 6-3, 6-4 victory for the Cougars.

Boys’ Tennis

The Cougars took a pair of defeats in the first week of their season.

H-K lost a 6-1 decision versus Cromwell on March 30. Two days later, the team took a 7-0 defeat against Westbrook.
