North Haven’s Lacrosse Squads Win Overtime Thrillers

Girls’ Lacrosse

The North Haven girls’ lacrosse team kicked off the 2019 season by winning two of three in a stretch of three road games last week. The Indians notched victories against Amity and Hamden to go with a loss versus Brookfield for a 2-1 start to the year.

North Haven earned an 11-10 overtime win against Amity in its season opener on April 2. After Amity tied it up late in regulation, senior captain Annie Uyeki netted the game-winning goal for North Haven during the overtime period. Uyeki had five goals with one assist, while senior captain Meg Christoforo scored three goals in the victory. Senior Molly Scarpa had two goals and an assist, junior Callie Kessler added a goal, and junior Madison Fredericks had an assist. Senior captain Casey Kross made 12 saves in net for Head Coach Lois Frankforter’s squad.

Two days later, the Indians claimed a 20-14 victory in Hamden. North Haven took a 10-5 lead into halftime and then scored 10 more goals during the second half. Uyeki had another big game by scoring seven goals to go with a pair of assists. Fredericks had three goals and an assist, Scarpa scored three goals, Christoforo had two goals with two assists, and Kessler also scored two goals. Senior Jillian Rowland scored a goal and had an assist, junior Christina DeAngelo and freshman Shealin Saracino each scored a goal, and senior Quinn Kirby and Grace D’Amico both had one assist. Kross made eight saves in goal for the Indians.

On April 6, North Haven had a non-conference game at Brookfield and dropped a 12-11 decision.

North Haven is coming off a campaign that saw the Indians go 11-7 and win the SCC Division II title on their way to their first berth in the SCC Tournament. North Haven also qualified for the Class M State Tournament for the fourth straight season. This year, the Indians have moved up to Division I of the SCC.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Indians began their year with three non-conference contests and claimed victory in two of the three games. North Haven took a loss at East Lyme, but came back to post home wins over Berlin and Southington, winning the latter matchup in overtime.

On March 30, North Haven opened its season by dropping a 9-7 decision at East Lyme. Two days later, the Indians hosted Berlin and prevailed 10-5 at North Haven Middle School. North Haven was up 6-1 at halftime and then put the game away by outscoring Berlin 9-1 in the third period. Junior Brian Mills had three goals with three assists, while senior Kevin Anasoulis scored three goals and had an assist. Sophomore Kasey Mongillo had two goals with two assists, senior Jack Broggi had two goals and an assist, and freshman Jake Hines added an assist. Senior goalkeeper Sean Quinn made seven saves to get the win.

Then on April 3, North Haven improved to 2-1 by earning an 11-10 home victory versus Southington in overtime. The Indians held a 4-1 lead after the first period, but Southington outscored North Haven 8-2 between the second and third periods to bring a 9-6 advantage into the fourth. North Haven won the final frame by a 4-1 margin to force overtime, where Broggi scored a goal to win it for the Indians. Broggi had three goals with an assist, Mongillo scored three goals, and senior Matt Crisco also scored three goals for Head Coach Eric Bailey’s club. Mills, Anasoulis, junior Don McInnis, and junior Jack Priebe all had one assist.

Last year, North Haven finished with a record of 9-9 and qualified for the Class M State Tournament, posting a 12-3 win against RHAM in a qualifying round game.

Baseball

North Haven played three road games to begin the 2019 season and came away with one win for an early mark of 1-2. The Indians took a 5-2 loss to Branford, earned an 11-4 win against East Haven, and then dropped a 6-5 contest against Fairfield Ludlowe last week.

Bob DeMayo is entering his 61st season as North Haven’s head coach. Last season, DeMayo picked up his 900th career victory while guiding the Indians to 19 wins, a share of their division title, a berth in the SCC Tournament semifinals, and an appearance in the quarterfinals of the Class L State Tournament.

North Haven lost a 5-2 contest at Branford in its season opener on April 1. The Hornets scored four runs in the first inning on their way to the win. Senior Nick Rossi allowed just one unearned run in four innings of relief for the Indians. Fellow senior Reid Kankel tossed two scoreless innings. Senior Danny Cannavaciolo had an RBI single, while junior Dave Christoforo singled and scored a run.

Two days later, the Indians visited East Haven and earned their first win of the year by defeating the Yellowjackets 11-4. North Haven scored two runs in the first inning and plated four more in the second to take a 6-0 lead on its way to the rout. Senior Gianni DiMartino drove in four runs by clubbing a pair of two-RBI doubles. Junior Matt Solomon had two singles with a double, three runs scored, and two RBI; senior Hunter Garthwait singled twice with a double, three runs and an RBI; senior John Gontarek had three singles and scored two runs; junior Matt DeRosa had a double to go with two runs and an RBI; and Cannavaciolo hit a two-run single.

Sophomore JJ Mazzaro notched the win on the mound after allowing three runs in four innings. Garthwait gave up an unearned run in three innings to close it out.

The Indians closed the week by taking a 6-5 loss at Fairfield Ludlowe on April 6. North Haven trailed 5-3, before tying the game with two runs in the fifth inning. Fairfield scored the winning run on a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to get the walk-off victory. DiMartino had three hits for the Indians, including the game-tying single in the fifth. DeRosa also had three singles to go with three RBI. Solomon had a single, a double, and three runs scored. Gontarek hit two singles, scored a run, and also stole two bases.

Kankel allowed one run in four innings of relief work for the Indians. Garthwait gave up one run in 2.2 innings of relief.

Golf

North Haven began its first campaign with new Head Coach Kevin St. Pierre when the Indians faced Foran on the road last week. North Haven earned a 192-203 victory at Grassy Hill Country Club in Orange on April 1.

Senior Alex Kirtland turned in a score of 40 for North Haven to earn medalist honors as the low scorer in the match. Junior Julia Raposo shot a 44, sophomore Anthony Rapuano finished with a 54, and junior Caleb Norris also scored a 54 to help the Indians get the win.

Girls’ Tennis

North Haven claimed victory in its first two matches of the season by earning wins against Mercy and Foran last week.

On April 1, the Indians notched a 4-3 home victory over Mercy at North Haven Athletic Complex. North Haven won all four singles matches to edge out the Tigers for the win. Senior Julia Migliorini posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles; freshman Alexandria Vollero prevailed 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match; senior Lily Mezzi earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles; and junior Anna Wootton notched a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles.

The following afternoon, North Haven defeated Foran by the score of 5-2 on the road. Migliorini (6-0, 6-0) and Vollero (6-2, 7-5) were victorious in the top two singles matches for the Indians, who also won all three doubles duels. North Haven’s No. 1 team of senior Zoe Bowerman and junior Kara Stevens battled for a 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-4 victory; the No. 2 duo of seniors Daniella Bryson and Jessica Tran won 6-4, 6-4; and the No. 3 team of senior Yasmin Mohamed junior Claire Looney claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Last season, North Haven finished with a record of 14-10 while qualifying for both the SCC Tournament and the Class M State Tournament. The Indians posted victories against Waterford and Killingly in the first two rounds of the state bracket.

Boys’ Tennis

The Indians opened up the 2019 campaign by winning two of their first three matches. North Haven defeated Notre Dame-West Haven and Wilcox Tech and also took a loss against Shelton during the first week.

North Haven netted a 4-3 road victory versus Notre Dame-West Haven at the University of New Haven on April 1. Senior Nick Cristante earned a 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 win in the No. 1 singles match for the Indians. Fellow senior Max Petruzziello won by the score of 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. North Haven’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Quinn Dallai and sophomore Tanner Powell claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win. The No. 3 tandem of junior Laekhram Singh and sophomore Matt Labanara earned a 7-5, 10-6 victory.

The next day, the Indians recorded a 7-0 shutout against Wilcox Tech in a non-conference match at North Haven Athletic Complex. Cristante (6-0, 6-1) and Petruzziello (6-0, 6-2) notched wins in the top two singles contests. Senior Matt McCarthy won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and fellow senior Matteo Franco posted an 8-0 win at No. 4 singles. Dallai and Powell prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles; the No. 2 team of senior Jake Barra and freshman Ben Rudikoff won via default; and the No. 3 team of Labanara and Singh also won by default.

On April 4, the Indians took a 5-2 home loss to Shelton. Dallai and Powell earned an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, while Singh and Labanara claimed an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Last year, North Haven finished with a record of 9-9 to qualify for the Class L State Championship for the fifth season in a row.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

North Haven recorded a 77-69 road victory versus Wilbur Cross at Bowen Field in New Haven on April 3.

Senior Erica Marriott took first place in the 200 (25.88), the 400 (59.22), and the long jump (17-11) for the Indians. Fellow senior Giselle Zumerchik finished first in the 100 hurdles (16.81) and the 300 hurdles (51.49). Senior Camille Sahirul won the triple jump (33-4.5), junior Giuliana Ciarleglio finished first in the javelin (86-0), and junior Mikayla Mansur won the pole vault (7-0). North Haven’s 4x400 relay of sophomore Sofia Fappiano, senior Sarina Sandwell, Sahirul, and Marriott claimed first place with a time of 4:25.

Last year, North Haven won its second straight SCC Oronoque Division title during the regular season. The Indians’ postseason was highlighted by a third-place finish at the Class MM State Championship.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Indians took an 83-67 home loss against Wilbur Cross at Vanacore Field on April 2.

Senior Kevin Spencer finished first in the 110 high hurdles (18.5) and also won the 300 intermediate hurdles (47.0) for North Haven. Junior Kyle Maruca claimed first place in both the discus (140-0) and the shot put (42-6). Senior Eric Spignesi finished first in the pole vault (10-6), senior Chris Moran won the long jump (18-8), and sophomore Anthony Vigliotto took first in the javelin (115-3). North Haven’s 4x100 relay of senior Jianni Snipes, junior Albert Hooks, freshman Jack Pollard, and Moran came in first place with a time of 47.2.
