Guilford Boys’ Track Runs Past Foran in Opener; Boys’ Lacrosse Starts Off 2-0

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford boys’ outdoor track team claimed a victory versus Foran in its first meet of the season last week. The Indians defeated the Lions by the final score of 85.5-54.5 on April 2.

First-place winners for Guilford included Elijah Dillon in the 1,600 (5:05.20) and 3,200 (in 10:31.00), Connor Rose in the discus (117-5), James Petritz in the shot put (42-4), Shane Grattan in the javelin (143-0), Will Dinauer in the 800 (2:14.20), Cade Yerkes in the 100 (11.90), and Uziah Newsome in the triple jump (35-7). The Indians’ 4x400 relay of Dinauer, Joe Walters, Cameron Hubbard, and McKendry Eschinger took first place (3:46.00). The 4x100 relay of Filip Kostic, Jaylen Dolmus, Nicholas Celotto, and Yerkes also finished in first (48.40), as did Guilford’s 4x800 relay (9:04.00).

Guilford’s second-place finishers were Ben Crair in the 1,600 and 3,200, Petritz in the discus, Rose in the shot put, Logan Roberts in the long jump, and Eschinger in the 400.

Placing third for Head Coach George Cooksey’s teams were Jacob Shiffrin in the 1,600 and 3,200, Hubbard in the 800, Thomas Gregory in the 400, Dolmus in the 100, Celotto in the 200, Anousa Sisaketh in the 110 hurdles, Evan Ghoreyeb in the high jump, Dylan Hegedus in the long jump, Bailey Meyers in the pole vault, and Ian Rose in the discus.

Last year, The Indians finished in 10th place and 19th place, respectively, for the SCC East Sectional and SCC Championship meets, after which they tied for 27th at the Class MM State Championship.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Indians began their campaign by dropping a decision versus Foran last week. Guilford faced the Lions on April 2 and took a 98-49 defeat.

Meredith Bloss won the 1,600 (in 5:32) and the 3,200 (12:16.30) for the Indians. Sabrina Koff won the javelin (70-6), Zoe McClure finished first in the triple jump (29-6), and the 4x800 relay Emma Bonz, Gianna Siciliano, Clara Wiesler, and Bloss also claimed first place (10:48). Tessa Fridell took second in the 3,200 at 12:16.6.

Last spring, Head Coach Jon Rivera’s club finished in fourth place at both the SCC East Sectional and SCC Championship meets, before coming in ninth place at the Class L State Championship.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Guilford started its year by winning its first two games in convincing fashion.

Guilford began the season with a 13-4 victory over East Lyme on April 3. Two days later, the Indians routed Fitch by the final score of 16-2.

Last year, Head Coach Brian White’s squad notched a mark of 10-6 on the regular season to earn bids to the SCC Tournament and the Class M State Tournament. In the SCC Tournament, Guilford dispatched No. 6 Shelton by a 16-4 score in the first round, before taking a 20-9 defeat against eventual champion Fairfield Prep in the semis. Then as the No. 9 seed in the Class M bracket, the Indians earned a 15-4 victory versus No. 8 seed Fitch in the first round, followed by a 13-12 quarterfinal defeat versus top-seeded, eventual champion New Fairfield to finish with an overall record of 12-8 on the year.

Boys’ Tennis

Guilford is 2-1 this spring after winning two of its first three matches of the season.

The Indians posted a 5-2 win over Hall on March 30. Guilford then defeated Fairfield Prep by a 5-2 final on April 1. The following day, the Indians lost a 6-1 decision against Hand.

In 2018, Head Coach Rob Messer’s squad finished with an overall mark of 19-3. Guilford reached the SCC Tournament semifinals and then tied for fifth at the Class L State Championship.

Girls’ Tennis

The Indians split their first four matchups of the year for an early record of 2-2.

On March 30, the Indians notched a 5-2 win against East Lyme. Guilford then took a 6-1 defeat to Lauralton Hall on April 1, before losing by that same score against Amity the next day. The Indians finished the week on a high note by posting a 6-1 victory over Sacred Heart Academy on April 4.

Crew

The Indians opened the season with a regatta against East Lyme on April 6.

Guilford’s boys’ 2nd varsity (5:14.52) and novice (5:22.80) boats won their races at the meet. Also racing were girls’ 1st varsity (6:07.85), girls’ novice (6:40.14), girls’ 2nd varsity (6:04.62), girls’ 3rd varsity (6:35.48), and boys’ 1st varsity (4:54.86).

Golf

The Indians took two of three during the first week of the year to start out at 2-1.

Guilford opened up on the links by winning a 187-205 decision over Law on April 1. The Indians then defeated Foran by the score of 184-194 on April 3. The next day, Guilford lost a 167-190 decision against Notre Dame-West Haven.

Head Coach Dave Esteban’s club posted a record of 18-5 during the 2018 regular season. The Indians qualified for the SCC Championship, where they finished in a tie for seventh place with Cheshire by shooting a collective score of 341. Then at the Division II State Championship, the Indians scored 349 to finish in a 12th-place tie with Branford.

Baseball

The Indians have a record of 0-3 after taking two defeats in last week’s action.

On April 1, Guilford lost a 19-13 slugfest versus Hand in its season opener. Jack Strand had three doubles for Guilford, while Mike Stebbins hit a two-run home run.

Then on April 6, the Indians hosted Darien and lost a 6-0 decision.

Softball

Guilford took defeats in its first three games of the season last week.

The Indians lost a 16-4 contest against East Lyme in their first game. Two days later, Guilford dropped a 7-2 decision to West Haven. The day after that, the Indians lost to Sacred Heart Academy by the score of 5-1.

In the East Lyme game, Ava Gladwin went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and a stolen base for Guilford. Jill Batick, Leah Kornguth, and Jordyn Goldstein each had a pair of hits.

Against West Haven, Mary Evans went 3-for-3, including a double. Batick had a pair of hits, while Jess Smith and Kornguth each had an RBI for the Indians.

Batick, Kornguth, Goldstein, and Smith all had a hit for the Guilford in the game versus Sacred Heart Academy. SHA scored four runs in the top of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie and get the win.

Guilford is being led by first-year Head Coach Meghan Wiese this season. Last year, the Indians finished at 16-8 overall, advancing to the quarterfinal rounds of both the SCC and Class L State tournaments
