Two Hand Alums Help SCSU Swim to 2nd in NE-10 Championships


Gregory Rodriguez and Michael Mendonca, who are both alums of the Hand boys’ swimming and diving team, helped the Southern Connecticut State University men’s swimming and diving team finish in second place at the Northeast-10 Championships that were held from Feb. 7-10.

In individual events, Rodriguez placed second in the 100 freestyle (46.42 seconds), fifth in the 50 freestyle (21.19), and sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:43.88). The senior achieved personal-best times in all three of these events during the meet. In relays, Rodriguez and his teammates finished first in the 200 medley relay, second in the 200 freestyle relay, and third in the 400 freestyle relay.

A sophomore, Mendonca also achieved personal best times in each of his events at the Northeast-10 Championships. Mendonca finished 16th in the 1,000 freestyle (10:40.69), 13th in the 200 backstroke (2:18.84), and 13th in the 1,650 freestyle (17:39.04) for the Owls.
