The Old Saybrook Parks and Recreation Department (OSPR) recently held its inaugural Co-ed Indoor Soccer Tournament as part of its Friday Night Teen Center program. The program, which had 32 participants, was free to all 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-graders in Old Saybrook and ran over the course of two Friday nights.

On Feb. 15, the first night of the tournament was held, featuring a round-robin format where each team played eight games to get seeded in the single-elimination tournament that took place on Feb. 22. The players in the tournament created the rosters, the team names, and uniforms. The highlight of the tournament was the Sweet Luna’s Team Spirit Award, which was given to the team that displayed the most spirit with its uniform. The award was won by the team of Hot Tomales—Claire Boucher, Katelin Brady, Jacob DeAngelo, and Aidan Gilson—which exemplified team spirit by wearing matching uniforms throughout the tournament.

The championship game came down to the Pigeons and the Drippy Snails. The final was the best-of-3 series that saw the first two games result in a tie, meaning the last game determined the winner of the tournament. Kevin Decapua scored the only goal of the game to lead the Pigeons to the 2019 title. The members of the Pigeons were Kelly Walsh, Decapua, Felipe De Moura, and Ethan Hajdasz. Everyone on the team signed the trophy ball that is displayed at the Teen Center.

The OSPR thanks Sweet Luna’s for its sponsorship and donation to this tournament.
