Astra’s Dancers Step Up at New Haven Regional Meet


Astra Studio of Dance and Performing Arts students earned a bevy of notable honors at the New Haven Regional Step Up 2 Dance Competition that took place on March 2-3. Students from Astra Studio of Dance and Performing Arts in Old Saybrook attended the New Haven Regional Step Up 2 Dance Competition that was held on the weekend of March 2-3. Astra’s students competed alongside dancers from the Connecticut, Massachusetts, and the greater New York area at the meet.

Astra Studio’s acro company brought home the regional championship for the Junior Teen Division. Astra’s routine Full Moon received a high platinum score, in addition to placing first in its category and first in the division. The acro company members include Elleyana Barbieri of Old Saybrook, Emma Golembeski from Gales Ferry, Sadie Heiser from Chester, Victoria Le of Clinton, and Jillian Pernal of Old Saybrook.

Barbieri was the crowned the regional high score soloist in the Young Division. Barbieri earned a high platinum for her open routine Zero to Hero, placing first in her category and first in the division.

The group of Callie Andrews from Clinton, Barbieri, Emma Elgart of Old Saybrook, Golembeski, Sadie Heiser, Vivi Heiser of Chester, Le, and Pernal earned a platinum for their lyrical routine Through the Eyes of a Child, along with a double gold for their jazz routine Proud Mary. Both routines placed first in their categories.

Astra’s tap company received a double gold and placed first in its category for its Mario Kart routine. Astra’s tappers were Andrews, Barbieri, Golembeski, Sadie Heiser, Vivi Heiser, Le, and Pernal.

Pernal scored high platinum for her open solo Once Upon a Dream, placing first in the category and seventh in the Teen Division. Golembeski received a platinum for her musical theatre routine Model Behavior, finishing first in her category. Vivi Heiser earned a double gold for her lyrical routine Wanderer’s Lullaby and placed first in her category.

Andrews earned a double gold for her tap routine Sing and placed first in the category. Her lyrical routine The Last Goodbye received a double gold and placed fourth in the category. Le earned a high gold for her open solo The Story Never Ends, placing third in the category.

Also at the event, Astra Studio was honored as an outstanding dance studio for its artistic style and innovative choreography.
