North Haven Fencing Competes in Team State Championships


North Haven’s boys’ and girls’ fencing teams traveled to Groton to test their mettle in the Team State Championships at Fitch High School on March 16. The Indians’ boys’ épée team finished in third place at the meet. The boys’ saber team took fourth place, while the boys’ foil squad finished sixth. The North Haven girls’ foil team posted a fourth-place performance at the State Championship.

The North Haven boys’ épée team was the No. 5 seed and opened up the draw by earning a 5-4 win versus No. 4 Fairfield. The Indians took a 5-1 loss against top-seeded Woodland in their next contest, but came back to defeat No. 7 Ledyard and earn third place.

North Haven had the No. 4 seed in the girls’ foil tournament and started off with a 5-2 win versus No. 5 seed Fairfield. The Indians took a 5-0 loss against No. 1 seed Guilford and then lost their next match versus No. 3 Hand to finish in fourth place.

In the boys’ saber tournament, the 3rd-seeded Indians blanked No. 6 seed Hand by a 5-0 final, before losing a 5-1 decision to No. 2 Darien. In its next match, North Haven took a 5-3 loss against 4th-seeded Brunswick to finish in fourth.

North Haven’s boys’ foil team was the No. 8 seed and dropped a 5-1 decision to top-seeded Norwich Free Academy in its first match. After posting a 5-2 win over No. 5 New London, the Indians took a 5-2 defeat to 2nd-seeded Hand to finish in sixth.

During the previous week, senior Eric Zamfir earned an eighth-place finish for North Haven in the boys’ épée tournament at the Individual State Championships.
