Girls’ Saber Places 2nd for Morgan Fencing at States


Morgan’ boys’ and girls’ fencing teams competed at the Team State Championships that were held at Fitch High School in Groton on March 16. The Huskies’ girls’ saber team finished in second place at the meet, while the girls’ épée team came in third place. The Morgan boys’ saber squad posted a fifth-place finish in states.

Morgan was the No. 2 seed in the girls’ saber tournament and earned a first-round bye. In its opening contest, Morgan posted a 5-0 shutout over No. 3 seed Hand to advance to the championship match. The Huskies took a 5-4 defeat against top-seeded Guilford in the final to finish in second place.

In the girls’ épée tournament, 3rd-seeded Morgan started off by notching a 5-3 win over No. 6 seed Greenwich. The Huskies lost a 5-4 contest versus No. 2 Fitch, but came back to beat 4th-seeded Guilford to claim third place.

The Huskies had the No. 5 seed in the boys’ saber tournament and opened the draw by taking a 5-2 loss to No. 4 Brunswick. Morgan bounced back by earning wins versus No. 8 Greenwich (5-1) and No. 7 Fairfield (5-3) to finish in fifth place overall.
