H-K Earns 3rd-Place Finish at Class S Swim Meet

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ swimming and diving squad scored 407 points to finish in third place at the Class S State Championship on March 11 at Wesleyan University. The Cougars recorded a pair of first-place performances and broke several records on their way to taking third with only seven swimmers competing at the meet.

H-K’s 200 freestyle relay of Kyle Mazziotti, Malone Revis, Eli Houlton, and Christo Garrelts placed first with a time of 1:38.26 to defeat Holy Cross (1:38.79) for the top spot and set a new Class S meet record. Zach Houlton also finished first in the 500 freestyle by swimming a time of 4:42.50, nearly five seconds ahead of runner-up Derek Fantano of Holy Cross (4:47.22).

Eli Houlton took second place for the 200 freestyle with a school-record time of 1:44.38. Zach Houlton finished third in the event with a 1:44.39. Mazziotti placed second for the 100 backstroke (53.41) and took third (47.69) in the 100 freestyle at states. The Cougars’ 400 freestyle relay of Mazziotti, Garrelts, and the Houlton brothers finished second at 3:13.75, which also set a school record. All of H-K’s first-, second-, and third-place performances yielded All-State honors for their respective participants at the Class S meet.

Additionally, Eli Houlton finished fourth in the 100 butterfly (53.69), Revis took fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:02.30) and was eighth for the 100 breaststroke (1:02.58), and Garrelts came in fifth in the 100 freestyle (49.85) and sixth in the 50 freestyle (22.71). H-K’s 200 freestyle relay of Revis, Colby Kish, Jimmy Clemente, and Zach Houlton finished ninth at 1:37.63.

A few days later, H-K sent several athletes to swim at the State Open Championship at Yale University on March 14. The Cougars finished in 12th place by scoring 154 points.

Zach Houlton finished fifth in the 200 freestyle and broke his own school record by swimming a time of 1:43.02. He also took sixth in the 500 freestyle with a school-record mark of 4:39.27. Mazziotti placed eighth in the 100 freestyle (47.75) and took 10th in the 100 backstroke (53.38). Eli Houlton finished 19th in the 100 butterfly (53.93) and 20th in the 200 freestyle (1:46.09). H-K’s 400 freestyle relay took seventh place, while its 200 medley relay finished 18th.
