Hand Boys’ Hockey Sets Record for Wins in a Season; Boys’ Swimming Finishes 4th at SCCs

Boys’ Ice Hockey

After setting a new record for victories in a season, the Hand boys’ hockey team took a loss against Sheehan in the SCC/SWC Division III Tournament semifinals last week. The Tigers are competing in the Division III State Tournament this week.

Hand defeated Newtown by a 6-2 score on Feb. 24, setting a single-season program record for wins by earning victory No. 16 on the year. The Tigers closed the regular season at 16-3-1 overall after taking a 5-2 loss to Branford the next day.

Hand entered the SCC/SWC Division III Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Tigers dropped a 2-1 decision versus No. 3 Sheehan in the semifinals at the Milford Ice Pavilion on Feb. 27.

The top-seeded Tigers (16-4-1) now prepare for the Division III State Tournament, which begins on Monday, March 4 with a first-round home game against No. 16 Norwich Free Academy (4-15-1) at 6 p.m. The winner advances to the quarterfinals to face wither either No. 8 Newtown or No. 9 Wilton on Thursday, March 7.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Tigers finished in fourth place at the SCC Championship last week. Hand scored 684 points to finish fourth at Southern Connecticut State University on Feb. 27.

Dan Chen finished third in the 100 backstroke (54.82) and fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:01.50) for Hand. The Tigers’ 200 freestyle relay of Sean Laragy, John Beiner, Will Porter, and Griffin Mascia claimed third place with a time of 1:32.90. The 400 freestyle relay of Porter, Laragy, Mascia, and Chen finished fifth (3:26.55), while the 200 medley relay of Joe Starkey, Beiner, Chen, and Ian Looby came in seventh place (1:49.01).

Porter took fourth place in the 100 freestyle (49.84) and finished 10th in the 200 freestyle (1:52.24) for the Tigers. Mascia placed in 11th for the 50 freestyle (23.53), Jack Signorello finished 12th in the 500 freestyle (5:08.54), and Jessica Murphy finished 13th in the diving competition with a score of 267.1. Ryan Harvey swam to 16th place in the 100 butterfly (59.29), while Rowan O’Connor finished 21st for the 100 breaststroke (1:10.18).
