The Guilford boys’ ice hockey team finished its regular season with a win and then took a loss against Branford in the semifinals of the SCC/SWC Division II Tournament last week. The Indians are competing in the Division II State Tournament that gets underway this week.
On Feb. 25, Guilford doubled up North Haven by a 6-3 score to finish the regular season with a record of 14-6.
Guilford entered the SCC/SWC Division II Tournament as the No. 4 seed and went up against No. 1 seed Branford in the semifinals at Bennett Rink on Feb. 28. Guilford dropped a 5-4 decision in a game that came down to a shootout, which the Hornets won by a 3-2 margin. Jack Dacey had a hat trick for the Indians in the defeat. Guilford held a 4-1 lead with 10:25 to go in the game, before Branford tied it by scoring three straight goals. The game stayed tied through the end of regulation, sending it straight to a shootout in lieu of an overtime period. Dacey and John DeLucia scored for Guilford in the shootout, but the Hornets netted the last two goals of the session to get the victory and advance to the championship game.
The Indians (14-7) are competing in the Division II State Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will host Amity (9-11) for a first-round game at DiLungo Rink on Monday, March 4 at 6 p.m. The winner advances to the quarterfinals to face either No. 7 East Catholic or No. 10 Farmington Valley on Friday, March 8.
Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing
Guilford’s boys’ and girls’ fencing teams both completed undefeated regular seasons that saw each squad go 21-0, following a pair of dominant performances last week.
Guilford hosted Morgan for its Senior Night on Feb. 25, and each team won by a 22-5 final. The girls’ team swept the match by prevailing in épée (5-4), foil (8-1), and sabre (9-0). The boys won 7-2 decisions for both épée and foil to go with an 8-1 victory in sabre. Senior captains Grace Beatty, Leo Westgard, and Evans Schultes each went undefeated on the day. Eric Lepeak also won all three of his bouts.
On Feb. 27, the Indians went up against Hand. The girls’ team defeated the Tigers by the score of 15-12, while the boys notched a 21-6 victory. The girls’ team lost in épée (6-3), but won for foil (5-4) and sabre (7-2). The boys’ squad picked up wins in épée (9-0), foil (5-4), and sabre (7-2). The evening was highlighted by strong performances by Julia Gangemi, Lepeak, Schultes, and Oscar Scott, each of whom won all three of their bouts.
