Stoeffler Swims to Victory in the 50 Free for North Haven at SCCs

Senior JP Stoeffler took first place in the 50-yard freestyle when the North Haven boys’ swimming and diving team competed at the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship last week. The Indians scored 287 points as squad and finished in 11th place of 15 teams at the meet, which took place at Southern Connecticut State University on Feb. 27.

Stoeffler swam a lifetime-best time of 21.99 seconds to finish first in the 50 freestyle at the SCC meet. Stoeffler’s mark edged out runner-up Jack Rogers, who finished in second place with a time of 22.23. Stoeffler scored 36 points for North Haven with his victorious performance.

Stoeffler also posted a sixth-place finish in the 100 freestyle at the SCC Championship. The senior finished with a time of 50.37 seconds to place sixth and score 29 points in the event.

In the 200 medley relay, North Haven’s team of Stoeffler, sophomore Tanner Powell, senior Kevin Powers, and sophomore Cameron Cargan came in eighth place with a time of 1:49.40, scoring 54 points. The Indians’ 200 freestyle relay of Stoeffler, Cargan, Powell, and junior Stephen Borrelli scored 52 points by placing ninth with a time of 1:36.93.

Cargan also competed in a pair of individual events for North Haven. In the 50 freestyle, the sophomore swam a time of 23.34 seconds to finish ninth and score 26 points for the Indians. Cargan also finished 15th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.81 seconds, scoring 20 points. Cargan achieved lifetime-best times with both of those performances. Powers swam a lifetime-best time of 1:00.04 in the 100 butterfly to place 20th and score 13 points.

Powell competed in two individual events for the Indians at the SCC meet. Powell finished 27th in the 100 breaststroke with a lifetime-best mark of 1:11.87 and also came in 30th place for the 50 freestyle at 24.51, scoring six and three points, respectively. Powell had previously posted a lifetime-best time of 23.88 seconds in the 50 freestyle at the SCC Qualifying meet that was held at Cheshire Community Pool two days prior to the championship. Also at the SCC Championship, Borrelli finished 27th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:42.79 to score six points for North Haven.

North Haven is competing at the Class M State Championship this week. The Class M Diving Championship takes place at Bulkeley High School at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6; the Class M Swimming Qualifying will be held at Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 9; and the Class M Boys’ Swimming State Championship will take place at Wesleyan University at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 11. After that, the State Open Diving Championship will be held at Bulkeley High School on Tuesday, March 12 at 5:30 p.m. The State Open Swimming Championship is at Kiputh Pool at Yale University on Thursday, March 14 at 7 p.m.
