Smith Claims Two Bronze Medals for Westbrook at Nutmeg Championship; Girls’ Hoops Loses to Putnam in States

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

Senior swimmer Garrett Smith represented Westbrook when he competed in two events at the Nutmeg Conference Championship last week. Smith earned a pair of third-place finishes on behalf of the Knights at the meet, which was held at Windsor Locks High School on Feb. 28.

Smith took third place in the 200 individual medley by swimming a time of 2:05.67 at the Nutmeg Conference Championship. He also finished third for the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.00 seconds flat. Smith will compete for Westbrook at the Class S State Championship at Wesleyan University on Monday, March 11 at 6 p.m.

Girls’ Basketball

The Westbrook girls’ basketball team’s 2018-’19 season came to a close when the Knights took a 48-25 loss at Putnam in the first round of the Class S State Tournament. The Knights, who also qualified for the Shoreline Conference Tournament this year, finished with an overall record of 9-13 on the season.

On Feb. 25, No. 27 seed Westbrook hit the road to face 6th-seeded Putnam for a first-round matchup and lost to the Clippers by the score of 48-25. Putnam took an 11-8 advantage after the first quarter and extended that lead to 16-10 at the half. The Clippers continued to add to their lead throughout the second half for the eventual 23-point victory.
