Aidan Henry Wins the 500 Freestyle for Branford-Guilford at SCCs

Junior Aidan Henry claimed first place in the 500-yard freestyle when the Branford-Guilford boys’ swimming and diving team competed at the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship last week. The Hornets scored 354 points as squad and finished in eighth place of 15 teams at the meet, which took place at Southern Connecticut State University on Feb. 27.

Henry, a junior at Guilford High School, swam a time of 4:44.28 to finish first in the 500 freestyle at the SCC Championship. Henry placed one spot ahead of his brother, freshman Finn Henry, who came in second place by posting a time of 4:49.62. Aidan Henry also took second place in the 200 individual medley by finishing with a time of 1:59.02. Finn Henry finished fourth place in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:47.37.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of junior Evan Laughlin, Finn Henry, sophomore Daniel Kamen, and Aidan Henry came in seventh place with a time of 1:34.21. The 400 freestyle relay of senior Noah Horton, Finn Henry, Kamen, and Aidan Henry also finished seventh by recording a time of 3:29.85. The 200 medley relay of sophomore David Zhang, senior Andrew Orce, Horton, and junior Evan Laughlin finished 12th with a time of 1:55.71.

Zhang finished 16th in the 100 backstroke (1:00.90) and 28th in the 200 individual medley (2:17.71) for Branford-Guilford. Kamen placed 17th in the 100 butterfly (59.50) and finished 23rd for the 200 freestyle (1:57.92) at the meet. Horton posted a 28th-place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.80.

Sophomore Alan Penna finished 28th (5:43.59) in the 500 freestyle, while freshman Miguel Pearce placed 32nd (6:03.22) in the event. Junior Ryan Andrews finished 32nd in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:12.47.

Branford-Guilford is competing at the Class L State Championship this week. The Class L Diving Championship takes place at Middletown High School at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6; the Class L Swimming Qualifying will be held at East Hartford High School at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 9; and the Class L Boys’ Swimming State Championship will take place at Southern Connecticut State University at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 11. After that, the State Open Diving Championship will be held at Bulkeley High School on Tuesday, March 12 at 5:30 p.m. The State Open Swimming Championship is at Kiputh Pool at Yale University on Thursday, March 14 at 7 p.m.
