Hand Grapples at the State Open; Boys’ Hockey Gets 15th Win

Wrestling

The Hand wrestling team sent three athletes to the State Open Championship that was held at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Feb. 22-23. The Tigers scored eight points and finished in a tie for 59th place as a team.

Class L state champion Alec Dube competed in the 195-pound division at the State Open. Dube lost by pin against Southington’s Caleb Chesanow at the 3:58 mark, before prevailing by pin over Andy Flores of Platt in 1:56. In his final matchup, Dube lost a 4-2 decision versus Greenwich’s Jackson Blanchard.

Matt Derken pinned Canton’s Braydon Fluckiger at the 5:24 mark in the 220-pound weight class. He then lost by pin against Austin Harnish of Wethersfield at 1:22, followed by a pinfall loss versus Gilbert’s Barjum Gutic in 3:27. Additionally, Kyle Davern wrestled in the 120-pound division for the Tigers at the meet.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

Hand improved to 15-2-1 on the season after winning a pair of games last week.

The Tigers defeated New Milford by the final score of 3-2 on Feb. 18. Hand went up against Sheehan later in the week and earned a 5-3 victory versus the Titans on Feb. 23.

After completing the regular season this week, Hand will compete in the SCC/SWC Division III State Tournament, beginning with a semifinal contest at the Milford Ice Pavilion on Wednesday, Feb. 27. With a victory, the Tigers would advance to the championship game that will be played at Bennett Rink on Friday, March 1 at 8 p.m.

Boys’ and Girls’ Fencing

The Tigers participated in the JV State Tournament that was held at North Haven High School on Feb. 23. The Tigers saw seven fencers earn medals at the event.

Luke Newton finished second in the boys’ foil competition, while Daniel Ginsburg placed second in boys’ sabre for Hand. Senior Carter Canth and Max Wu finished in fourth and eighth place, respectively, for boys’ sabre. Hope Blundon took third place in girls’ sabre for the Tigers. Sophie Glassman finished sixth in girls’ épée, and freshman Brian Girardi came in sixth place for the boys’ épée competition.

Girls’ Basketball

Hand is the No. 19 seed in the Class L State Tournament and opened the draw by playing a first-round game at No. 14 seed RHAM (11-9) on Feb. 25 (after press time). With a victory, the Tigers (10-12) would either play at No. 3 Bullard Havens or host No. 30 North Haven in a second-round contest on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. The Class L quarterfinals are on Monday, March 4; the semis take place on Friday, March 8; and the Class L state final will be held at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville on either Saturday, March 17 or Sunday, March 18.
